Until everyone stops buying all except absolute necessities. :p
That's how most people are living now anyhow...because of government fraud, corruption, mismanagement and gross over-spending of our money. If they'd let people keep most of their money in the first place, there would be no need for all the taking of it.

ha that will never happen.

People like STUFF and buy lots of it. That's why there are so many people in credit card debt they can't afford and why people own homes they can't afford... they want the stuff even if they can't afford it and I dno't think that will EVER change. Unless something really really drastic happens... but high sales tax isn't that drastic something I don't think. especially if it means no income tax... then people will have more money to spend on the stuff.

We have something like an 8.?% sales tax. It hasn't stopped anyone from buying things that I've seen. I mean, people could go down to Oregon to shop (some do if they're close to the border) but most people in the state just shop in state. We don't tax food. Actually, we just voted to get rid of a bottled water and candy tax that the legislature thought would be a good idea.

There was an "income tax on the rich" thing on the ballot last time around. Thankfully everyone shot that down because the legislature would have just amended it to include all residents in a couple years, not just high income ones. Besides the fact that having an income tax on only some people would be grossly unfair.

That's one thing I really like about the US. There are so many states with such varied laws that you really have a lot of flexibility picking out where you'd like to live based on taxes and other laws. Personally I'd like to see the feds having less influence, but doubt it will ever go back that way.

Yeah when I lived in Ontario it was a 15% sales tax on everything... and that sure did not stop people from buying stuff that wasn't nessecity even though nessecity items were taxed the same.

So higher sales tax doesn't mean people stop buying "fun" stuff really lol and it sure doesn't keep people who can't afford it from buying more than nessecity items (well not ALL people of course)

15%!!! Holy moly! And everything is just peachy with Canada's economy?

Idaho's sales tax is 6%.

High sales tax certainly has a bearing on what I purchase. I take into account what the thing is really going to cost...especially big ticket items.

Property tax is another thing. It's quite high in Washington, but not as high as a lot of places. My little quarter acre lot I own in Washington has a property tax of over $300 a yr. And that's just the land. The property tax on my 5 acres in Idaho, with a big shop, small house and mountain view is a little less than my rather plain Jane lot in Washington with no improvements. Of course, there are reasons for that....more schools. If you want lower prop. tax, live somewhere where there are fewer children. LOL. Almost all the prop. tax is used for schools.

well I didn't mean that there wouldn't be anyone that would cut back but I think the majority would be business as usualy. if it jumped maybe at first people wouldn't buy as much but after a while the majority would go back to buying like normal.

People in this country would never stop buying non nessecity items as a whole. some people might stop but the majority I think would keep spending

I've always liked this idea as well. Get rid of income tax, and raise the sales tax.

Our state doesn't have an income tax. Our sales tax is 6.5%. I know that up in Gatlinburg, TN, the sales tax is 12.5%.

People are going to keep buying regardless of the sales tax price. At least this way, you are only taxed on what you decide to buy.

Well our sales tax is 7% and we STILL have income tax ...........but we are not taxed on food like some other states, at least that's a plus. Restaurant foods ARE taxed, but I mean grocery items.

Our sales tax is over 8% now and our income tax is going up from 2% to 6%, because the state is a bunch of morons who's idea of budgeting is to give themselves all raises and then go "OMG WE HAVE NO MONEY! BUDGET CRISIS!!!"

The North Carolina sales tax rate is 5.75%, and the maximum NC sales tax after local surtaxes is 8.25%. Counties and cities in North Carolina are allowed to charge an additional local sales tax on top of the North Carolina state sales tax. Most counties charge an additional 2% (92 out of the 100 counties in North Carolina). Most groceries are taxed at a reduced rate of 2% (excluding things like candy and soft drinks)!

North Carolina allows counties and cities to charge up to an additional 2.5% local sales tax on all non-exempt purchases within their jurisdiction. As a result, the actual sales tax you pay in North Carolina may vary between 5.75% and 8.25% depending on which county or city the sale is made in.

That is terrible Beanie :(

I know I constantly see the headlines for Chicago and all the money issues they go through (we HAVE TO have chicago channels on our direct tv, they won't give us south bend for some reason  ) I just don't know how they get away with so much of that BS.......I really don't!

EDIT: I guess I should also say that we don't have any of that 'local' sales tax stuff as of yet..........we have 7% across the board and that's it. I did notice in Arkansas when I was visiting my receipt had 2-3 different sales taxes listed separately! Not only that, even the grocery items were taxed the same!

Not true. Groceries, for example have no sales tax. Neither do prescription drugs or childrens clothes. Often the necessities are tax free here.

Actually yes. Our recession was the 'lightest' in comparison to other countries. Our economy stayed strong when other countries tanked. Things are taxed high yes. But, for example we have far more roads per person than the US. If you want to maintain roads each person has to pay more. Over all costs to a family though are likely similar. For example health care costs us less per capita. (no insurance companies to pay) I remember reading some where (of course can't fidn it now :p ) that the disposable income spending ability was the same for the most part in the US and Canada, despite the differences is tax rates. The money still gets spent on the same things, just in different ways.

right... so a high sales tax doesn't stop people from spending... that was my point and that's on top of an income tax.

So if there were no income tax and instead just a higher sales tax it's unlikely people would just stop shopping

True, but then people could still choose. If they felt that they didn't want the gov taking so much from them, they could choose not to consume products that directly or indirectly use gov services.

If things like basic food and medicine were not taxed then those who wished to consume nothing but the necessities would pay little. They would also have little impact on other things. Ie less pollution for that person.

We have 19% salestax. And between 10 and 40% income tax, depending on how much you earn. Nuff said.
Most of our taxes go to the wrong causes. I hate our government...

You know, Gypsy, I have yet to hear anyone, from anywhere, say that they LOVE their government. Their country, yes. Some individual politician, occasionally. Their government? No.

Edit: And I've seen attempts to make the "government" of several nations more "friendly" and "likeable" . . . the result is invariably creepy.
