We took Mitchell to the vet on monday because he started drooling excessively. The vet took some blood, and called back with the results a few minutes ago. He said Mitchell's kidney values have sky rocketed since we last tested them, only his protein levels are stable. He said his kidney disease is progressing really quickly and we are going in later tonight to do a urine collection and blood pressure. Once we have all the current data on his kidney levels and function, we'll discuss what plan of action to take and if we need to see a specialist.

He's only 3 years old...

I am so very sorry. What a sad thing. I experienced something like that with my young Doberman with liver disease, diagnosed at about 3 years old. It's quite heart breaking to find something like this out about such a young dog. It's just not fair. I'm hoping something can be done to help him. Lots of positive vibes heading your way. (((hugs)))

Oh wow... it's totally not fair when something like this is diagnosed in such a young animal :( just cruel. We'll be thinking about you and hoping there's a good protocol that will keep him comfortable and the disease under control for years to come!

Vet took his blood pressure, and he said factoring the stress of being at the vets, he would expect it to be at 160...Mitch was at 180...the vet said that was not a good sign...

At this point in time, best case scenario is a low grade infection. Vet is doing a lepto titre to check for that. If it is not that, then the prognosis is not good.

Thank you for all the thoughts and vibes, they are greatly needed and appreciated.

Oh no! :( If it's not a low grade infection, what would it be, and what would be the consequences? I'm only familiar with kidney issues in comparison with my grandmother's kidney disease. She is in stage 4 of kidney disease, but has lived with it for many years (and progressing slowly through each stage) and had a pretty good quality of life until recently. In october her levels became toxic and she ended up falling and bumping her head really bad. Since then she's gone downhill really fast. She lives with us, and has for a couple years, and she has to have hospice come in, and my mom is her almost 24/7 caretaker (the only relief she gets is sleep at night, and 1 hour 3 times a week when we go to church-a babysitter comes for that time) she has to feed her, change her, and basically be at her beck and call. It's been really hard, but like I said she had a pretty good quality of life until now. But that's the only experience I've had with kidney issues, and I'm not sure if dogs are similar at all.
