:shrugs: it is used quite often around here.

Like to a little girl, who is playing with a doll, she is the dolls Mama. Or a girl with a younger sibling, to whom she likes to pretend it is HER baby. She pretends she is the mama, so you call her mama.

It is just playing into their game with them.

But these times arent during a game or whatever. I tell Bev all the time to get her baby (her doll) and if she wanted me to play a game with her saying that its one thing. But randomly just in normal conversation. thats different IMO.

I NEVER heard that term growing up and only hear it from certain people and sometimes not in a context ANYONE needs to be talking about my daughter in.

like today it was: Little Mama is looking HOT today.

Im sorry but do not refer to my 3 year old as hot. She is cute, pretty, adorable but she is NOT hot and should not be refered to as such.
EW! That's. . .not right.

It is a cultural difference, Sparks. Up there, it's a term of endearment.

Down here, it's downright creepy.

No.. its just "icky" and "creepy" to people that wanna make it that way...

cause its not creepy here...

I freaking hate it to, and I HAVE and will continue to tell people not to call Winnie that. We call Bobsie Mama, but she's had at LEAST one litter of puppies from what we could tell when she got spayed, so it fits. My daughter, however, is eight weeks old, and she won't be a "mama" for a very, very, VERY long time if she knows what's good for her.
UGH.

I ask everyone I know that has even hinted at calling her that to stop. She has a name and a MILLION nicknames and I dont even care if you come up with your own but Mama/Mami is off limits. I find it creepy. You want to call your kid that fine what ever it still grates my nerves but I will live :rofl1: Call my daughter that and you have got a ENTIRE different ball game.

I haven't heard that around here..
I do call Clive "my/your/the child" when talking to my husband (as in: "can you take the child whilst I shower") ;)
Nothing will ever be as creepy to me as adults calling their parents Mommy/Daddy though...

I call my dad Daddy or Dad, Daddy when Im trying to butter him up for something or when its just a emotional conversation LOL other then that hes Dad or Claude if he ignores Dad LOL. I dont call my mom mommy unless Im really having a bad day and I just need my mommy LOL.

The kids are: YOUR son or YOUR daughter to Jeremy when they are being pains in the butt and Midgets or Fatty and Monkey/Brat Child/Smelly thing (when she has a bad pullup). Very apt descriptions of both. :rofl1:

My grandma still refers to her father as Daddy when talking about him. Even more disturbing was she referred to my grandpa as that as well. I mean...I know they had kids and all, but none called him Daddy..certainly not 40+ years later...

Oh hell no could I call Jeremy daddy besides tell Bev go to Daddy take this to Daddy and what not. I also only refer to my dad as daddy to him, Kerry and Jeremy (and only again emotional times). Other then that he is Dad or my Dad, I cant imagine being 40 and calling my dad Daddy all the time.

Is it a dude or a lady saying it? If it's a dude, it's creepy and inappropriate (though creates a double standard). If it's a lady, then I'd say it's fine. I know it's pretty popular in the Mexican/latino culture (or at least, that's who I've always seen using the phrase with kids).

Sometimes I say "dang lil mama" to my friends... but in a sarcastic way! I definitely would not refer to a child in that way. Creeps.

There is this lady who works with me, who is, I don't know. Very very slow. She refers to dogs as "mama" non-stop. Even male dogs, in front of their owner. "Hey mama!" "Oh what a pretty mama!" "Mama had so much fun playing games!" It is sooooo weird and it is literally nails on a chalkboard to me now. I think it's really inappropriate and strange, but she is like that in many ways. D:

I don't understand what is creepy about it?

Never heard it before, but certainly doesn't sound creepy at all.

I call all the kids I work with monkey, so hey.... I actually call a lot of people that.

Hey little monkey.

I'd imagine if we're being judgemental about these things that would be more insulting.

I don't find it creepy but I find it annoying. My mom does this with Tucker, my aunt does this with Phoebe as well. *in baby voice* "Oh mama, we'll be back soon, you're a good boy mama". It's SO annoying. Mom claims she did this with us when we were children. Which is odd because I had never heard her say that to ANYthing until after my aunt started doing it with Phoebe. But ya know, whatever, just a stupid pet peeve.

LOL!! I call my own children monkeys too! And have HUGELY offended people around here for calling my OWN kids monkeys. *Shrug* They climb trees, throw sticks at each other, and make a lot of noise and mess, seemed a fitting analogy.

I don't find "mama" or "little mama" offensive, but as a mom, I will defend your right to be offended by it :D We all get a bit irrationally protective of our own kids and I think that's called healthy mothering (if its not please don't set me straight, I like to think I'm mostly normal).

But just a word of caution, pick and choose your battles when it comes to what's going to bug you as a mom, 'cause it only gets worse as they grow and there is only so much emotional energy to be spared on annoying people :)

It must be a cultural thing, I've never heard of someone calling a little girl Mama before. But I can understand how it can be frustrating, especially with the term Mama for a little toddler. It seem society wants to grow our children faster then they should, and don't seem to have a chance to enjoy just being a kid. In that context, it would bother me. Little pet names like princess and, I don't know, buttercup is more of a sign of affection then to place a little girl under the name of Little Mama.

The only time I've hear little Mama was during play time while playing with my dolls. Like "Aw, look at the cute little mama taking care of her baby".

Most of the adults in my family referred to us kids as "monkeys" and I only recently discovered how offensive some people think it is--I never really even thought about it.

To me, "Mama," "Lil Mama," whatever is just another name people call kids. It is not very widely used in the area, but I suppose I don't consider it offensive or creepy. One of my cousins was called "Little Mama" by a couple of relatives when she was a kid on account of her being so bossy to her younger brothers--lol.

It's a cultural thing... People give names and certain things certain associations, it doesn't mean that it's creepy. Just as being proud of the Confederate Flag doesn't mean you are racist ;)
