I never said it was offensive  Just that it creeps me out, that doesnt make it offensive. Offensive would be calling a child sl*t, B*tch, or other profane terms. IT is offensive to ME if I asked you not to call her that and you continue though.
Potato, potato.

Offensive, creepy, negative.

They are two different words Creepy does not mean offensive. Ive never heard the words interchanged.

of·fen·sive   /əˈfɛnsɪv or, for 4, 5, ˈɔfɛn-, ˈɒfɛn-/ Show Spelled
[uh-fen-siv or, for 4, 5, aw-fen-, of-en-] Show IPA

–adjective
1. causing resentful displeasure; highly irritating, angering, or annoying: offensive television commercials.
2. unpleasant or disagreeable to the sense: an offensive odor.
3. repugnant to the moral sense, good taste, or the like; insulting: an offensive remark; an offensive joke.
4. pertaining to offense or attack: the offensive movements of their troops.
5. characterized by attack; aggressive: offensive warfare.

creepy (ˈkriːpɪ)

I sort of feel left out because I've lived in a lot of places and never recall anyone randomly referring to a child as 'momma' or 'little momma'........the only way I can bring it to mind if the little girl in question WAS mothering something ie her doll or sibling.

Hmmmm, learned a new one today, LOL

I am guilty of calling people dear or sweetie, sometimes even little missy.........but the little missy is when they are either in trouble or mock trouble :p

For the record, I don't think I'd care much for anyone calling my little girl momma either.........it would strike me odd, maybe because I didn't grow up hearing it *shrugs*

OK - interchange 'offensive' with 'creepy' in my last post.

Semantics - jeez... :D

I dont care if someone finds it creepy so it wouldnt bother me. Just because they find it creepy doesnt mean I do. Its not like I expect people to stop using the term or think they are stupid or anything for using it. *I* just find it creepy not offensive, your not offending me by saying it. ;) It would be pretty silly to be offended by it IMO unless you asked them not to do it and they continue.

Me calling you a Moron is offensive. Someone calling their child a profane word is offensive to the child.

I dont get how Monkey can be offensive still?

I don't get how mama is creepy. That's my point... there's no rules on it.

I don't think monkey IS offensive, I use it all day every day. But I imagine some mums could think you think their child looks like this:

Do I find monkey offensive, no. There isn't too much problems with calling a kid a monkey. Sexualizing young girls IS a problem these days. Hence sexually charged names such as little momma or hot momma (out side of hispanic culture) would be offensive to me.

And who cares? If I find it offensive to me, than if I had a daughter I would ask people to not call her that. If you don't find it offensive then if you have a daughter go ahead... Telling DC its wrong for her to feel that way is kinda rude IMO. (I call my child, 'the child' or the 'spawn' in affectionate tones. But if it offended my husband or my child I wouldn't... I would never argue that it was wrong for someone to be creeped out or offended by them)

Calling a child a monkey around here is offensive because it harkens back to the days when black children were compared to monkeys in a belittling way. Same as calling a young black man "boy".

You know living in the deep south I SHOULD have thought about that  .

Speaking of calling a black person a monkey I have a funny story.

My brother was born prematurly and with major jaundice and I was 2 at the time. Well we had to take him to the er or something when he was a little baby and in the waiting room was a little old black man with grey hair and a grey beard. Well we had just been to the "zoo" here that had a black and grey monkey and apparently I yelled out "Look Mommy a MONKEY!"
:eek::rofl1:

Thankfully the guy thought I was cute and funny.

I've never heard of little girls being called "mama". I've heard of dogs/cats being called "mama" when they've had litters before.

My friend calls her kids "donkey" if they do something stupid. Lol

My other friend has a four-year old nephew that they all call "Little Man". I don't even know the kid's real name, his nickname is pretty much all they use.

Wow... you are lucky he did, I don't find that funny at all... and I think my mother would have been terrified if I called an elderly African American a "monkey".

Anyway, someone from the hispanic community calling your child "mami" or "papi" is an endearing term. It is short for "mamita" or "papito" and has somewhat the meaning of calling a young child "junior"... so, knowing that, I don't see how it would bother you so much?

I mean, yes, you don't have to love it- but if someone you know is showing endearment towards your child... why not just let it go? When I lived in N.C. and had no clue that everyone and their mother calls everyone hun, sweets, etc., I felt terrible because I thought people were patronizing me left and right. Someone explained to me that that is just the way it was- a cultural difference.

You just need to pick and choose your battles sometimes.

I was 2 when I called him that. I didnt realize it was a bad thing he was a bent over OLD black man with along beard. Its not like I meant anything by it. My mom didnt exactly laugh right after I said it either she was embarressed as heckand apologized PROFUSILY. These days though its just one of those funny things that I said when I was a kid.

Because most of the people who say it to her arent hispanic or hispanic origin for one thing and if I ask you polietly not to call her that I expect you to not call her that, its called common courtesy ;)

While I don't much care to hear small kids called mama, it doesn't bother me all that much. It would, if I had asked someone NOT to do that. And if somebody called my toddler a hot mama, he or she would be backing up fast, making little appeasing gestures to ward me off, because culture or no culture, that's my kid and not some skank off the street! I overreact to some things.

And I don't like hearing kids called monkeys, solely because I don't like monkeys and it just rubs me the wrong way.

I think most people grow out of the "Mommy" and "Daddy" thing--well, maybe not "Daddy"--but if they don't, so what?

Oh, and sort of off the topic: I don't like unknown men calling me honey, dear, or darling. I have, however, matured past staring at them coldly and saying, "Do I know you?" in my iciest voice.

I still don't see how it's creepy. It just weird b/c its incorrect. I have heard it from African Americans, but again, not to a little kid. Just a teen/adult who isn't a mother.

Its creepy to me because these are the same people calling their S.O's that or letting their kids (elementary school and under) run around in less then a yard of fabric or thinking its funny when they dance like adults. Im sorry thats not right and I dont want my daughter lumped into all of that and I find it downright creepy to treat a young child that way.
