It's all about tone and context. But it makes me think of a ghetto hoochie mama, which I guess isn't all that complimentary.

Personally, I think if it came out of YOUR vagina, you get to decide what creeps you out. :)

The cultural angle makes a sense. I have never heard it, and we have very little (ie no noticable) mexican culture.

To me it still seems vaguely sexualized little girls. For a couple of reasons. One in order to be a 'mama' one must first have sex. And two 'hot momma' etc is often a term used to mean sexy. It just makes me go 'ick' as little girls have enough sexualization as it is.
This is exactly why it creeps me out, too.

Its creepy to me because these are the same people calling their S.O's that or letting their kids (elementary school and under) run around in less then a yard of fabric or thinking its funny when they dance like adults. Im sorry thats not right and I dont want my daughter lumped into all of that and I find it downright creepy to treat a young child that way.
Agreed!

I've never heard hispanic folks refer to children as mamito or anything diminutive of their parents. My inlaws all call children "mijo" or "mija" regardless of whether or not it's their child. And sometimes they'll jokingly call them "cochino" if the kid is all filthy from playing outside, but that's it.

From Urban Dictionary:
"A female who dresses ghetto ho fabulous. Lots of gold, lots of weave-typically Pattie LaBelle style with red, purple, gold, or orange streaks, and long nails with lots of airbrush glitter, and color. This female's goal in life is to use her female attriibutes to obtain a male with lots of money or any money to spend on her. Weaves, rent, & diapers for her baby from another daddy included."

I know what it is, I just find the term offensive....

especially when so many people have glamorized the "ghetto" when its not that AT ALL...

My bad, I didn't mean to offend. And my intention wasn't to glamorize the ghetto, it's just that it's a word that's thrown around so much that I find myself using it casually and not seriously.

I call everyone little mama or papa. Horses, dogs, people. It's habit. I picked it up working at a race track barn from a lot of the riders/handlers. They were dealing with so many horses all of them were called little mama or papa because you couldn't keep track of all the names. Heh.

^ That. In Arizona and even hispanics here in Indiana, that's the only 'general' term I've heard them use for kids.......be it random kids, or their own. Pronounced Me-Ho / Me-Ha

Now as a teen girl in AZ, I have been called mamasita..........but I know for SURE it was meant in a sexual (crude) way because any time it happened it was coming from groups of migrant workers standing around outside of stores/businesses and such along with whistles and other remarks  (like construction workers are portrayed in movies)

Makes sense, because that's what Robert calls me. :rofl1: It would never occur to him to call our daughter that.

Maybe it depends on where you're from? I'd never heard it until recently when my friend had a baby, and TONS of people are always calling her "lil mama". I don't get it, I call her by her name, Avery, but it doesn't bother me that people call her that lol!
