I too am suprised by the number of people who say they "swear a lot" not to pass judgement on anyone here (because I think people on this board as a whole are smart)but when people use f-bombs in every other sentence I usually take it as meaning:
A) they are uneducated or
B) they are hillbilly

I don't have any problems with uttering the occasional swear word myself but it is generally either because I just slammed my finger in a door or something or in the privacy of my own home when I am ranting to my husband.

My parents never swore--I heard my dad say s*** twice growing up when he hurt himself--that's it. They never said d*** either because of the religious implications.

I guess I generally try to present myself in a professional manner at all times--at work, in public etc--and it's not professional at all to use such language.

They're just words, if there aren't bad intentions then who cares. I can shove somebody or punch them in the arm screwing around or I can shove or punch them with intent to hurt them. There's a big difference and it annoys me more when people refuse to differentiate between the 2 and lump everything all together because it "offends" them.

If they are just words why not choose ones that you can say in front of children and the elderly and not be offensive to anyone? It's one thing to tell a joke or say a few words when out at the bar but it's another to use them in every day conversation.

Because those words airn't offensive to my family or any of the people I surround myself with outside of work ect.

They are just everyday common words for me and always have been. Doesent make me less educated. I just don't feel the need to change the way I speak outside of work (even though at the barn everyone has foul mouths so it doesent matter much). Its not a habit I feel like needs breaking.

I mean even the animals all have their different swear word nicknames. Guess which one was Tuckers ;). Its just common vocab in my house and circle of friends.

When someone gets offended at the words used in everyday conversation I just shrug it off. They are just words.

And yes I do have respect for my elders and certain religious members of the family. And tone it down around them. But they are usually the odd ones out at family events. So if I don't slip up someone else might. If I do slip up around them I do apologize.

Anyone else I could really care less lol.

You're right, they are "just words". They are "just words" that I happen to find distasteful. The only means in which I find them offensive is when people use them in derogatory ways, with the intent to attempt to hurt someone.
How would people feel if I said I used them around the kids I teach everyday? After all, they are "just words". Nothing offensive about them!

I wouldn't mind honestly. Like I said before no one in my family watches their language around the little ones. No one ever did with me when I was little. But I knew I wasent allowed to cuss at a young age. Atleast not infront of my parents. Around my teen years most words became acceptable.

My nephews, neices, and friends kids all are growing up hearing swear words daily. Not a big deal since I have never witnessed them repeating it. I know I won't be biting my tongue when I have kids.

I remember when I was a little kid I used to find it really funny when certain friends of my mom would whisper or alter cuss words so they were "kid friendly". My moms friend STILL alters her words around me and I just shake my head and laugh. To me its no big deal. The words airn't physically hurting anyone.

And if my kids got in trouble for saying those words in school. Well I guess they will learn that there is a time and a place to speak like that.

I swear a lot around friends and family, but i can control it around strangers and children. I also wont swear in a restaurant unless I can do it quiet enough that only the person I'm talking to hears it. I've actually chewed out Stephen when he let out a string of cuss words while we were eating at a Village Inn/Denny's type place.

I guess I'm one of the weird ones too then.

I really, really don't like swearing. There are so many words in our language, that to me using variations of F*** as an all purpose noun, verb, and adjective implies a general lack of creativity and vocabulary.

Maybe it's just my personal history with people who swear (i.e. alcoholic father beating me up with a string of profanities coming out his mouth) but I really, really hate when people swear in conversation with me. I don't say anything to them about it, most seem to intuitively pick up on it and just stop because they are nice folks.

Cutting loose a bomb here and there as a expletive, when you've had a bad day or smashed your hand is one thing, but to use it in every day conversation is just plain distasteful to me.

And I hate cussing in movies. Most of the time, it is irrelevant to driving the plot forward or setting the tone of things. To me it is like finding dog poop in my ice cream, something unappetizing in an otherwise great thing.

And I hate it when people use strong profanity around children. The meaning of those words is not polite or appropriate for youngsters. Would you be okay with your kid's school teacher using words like "sexual intercourse" or "penis" or "vagina" or "poop" to describe people/things in conversation, or as expletives? (okay, hearing a kindergarten teacher yell poop would be funny, but still wouldn't be professional). To me those words are disrespectful because of the things they imply about the people/things they are being directed towards, and also perpetuate the idea that our reproductive parts and processess are a distasteful thing too when they are not. That disrespect is, imo, a bad thing to teach to children, regardless of the words conveying it.

Just wanted to add, because it wasn't in my earlier rant, that I strongly believe there is no such thing as "just a word"

Words have substance. They have weight. They are real, physical, things. You can take a word and put it on the table.

Words can start wars. They can wreck marriages. They can destroy friendships.

Words can lift spirits. They can pull a person from the brink of despair, the edge of death and back into living again. Words can bind two people together. Words can build a person up, they can forge the way for peace. They can transport you to a place that has only existed in another person's mind, and let you see a time, place and people that don't exist in our world. They are magic.

I believe that the words we use, the words we think, affect who we are. They can change us in subtle ways. Words are powerful, and we must use and choose them carefully.

LMAO that is so funny! Definately added to my favorites list.

I am totally non sensitive to being called any swear word. I was called them constantly while my dad too was abusive. It just got to the point where I didn't let the words bother or define me.
