Just noticing a few concerning things. This would put her about 3 weeks from the end of her heat. Is that long enough to actually see something on an ultrasound or should I wait another week?

Please please please send me NOT PREGNANT vibes!

I think dogs are tricky to ultrasound. (horses you can ultrasound at 18 days in.. which is impressive considering they are pregnant for 11 months) Talk to your vet.

I wouldn't worry about signs though, most of my guys act like they are bred for the first while.

I'm so paranoid! I think it would just ease my mind. She seems to be gaining weight a little bit around the mid-section the past few days and her nipples seem bigger (just looking at pics from the first day we had her). I know it could be a false pregnancy but I'd feel better if I knew for sure. I just honestly don't know what I'd do if she is pregnant although maybe I can ship her over to Summer's breeder if it comes to that...

I've heard various things about ultrasounding time for dogs, some say 3 or 6 weeks. Some say you often don't see anything this early but I'd really like a sure fire way to know. I've been trying to read up as much as I can.

Breathe, relax :) What is, is. My guys ALL do that after a heat. Ask your vet, even if other sites say what can be done it all boils down to what your vet and their equipment can do.

The vet wasn't too concerned last week about it but I think I'll bring her back in early next week to see what he thinks.

I know, I need to breathe. I don't like not knowing. :p

Yup. Breathe.

I know how you feel. When Buffy went through her first heat and false pregnancy symptoms I was a basket case.

When Kharma went through her first heat and false pregnancy symptoms I was a basket case.

When Tallulah went through her first heat, false pregnancy symptoms and a truly nasty case of mastitis I was a basket case.

The vet really advised me against spaying her last week when I brought it up. She's been hacking and coughing quite a bit lately from her HW and he didn't want to put her under unless it was absolutely necessary. I decided to take his advice and wait it out a little bit longer, but I'm beginning to think it's going to be necessary.

Looking at the pictures, her nipples look like they are the same in the first picture sort of. The weight gain could simply be because she is eating now.

That is a big weight gain, it seems. And it's ALL in her belly - not over her ribs and stuff, so I doubt it's just from eating. BUT I don't have much experience with bitches and false pregnancies (I kind of have all males ;))

I know at work we usually do an ultrasound at 30 days post breeding. So if you're 3 weeks out since her heat cycles ended, then you should be pretty close. Usually if they're pregnant we see it clearly at that point, though if it's negative we tell them to come back in a week to make sure (we don't charge for the second one).

I think really on the level of risk spaying a HW+ dog vs allowing this bitch to whelp out from whatever she was bred to I know where I'd put my cards as far as cost and risk. Once she's at the end of her term you are pretty well committed to finding homes for mutt puppies with possibly one or multiple fathers in the litter and then still finding a good home for Ada.

For the cost of the ultra sound here you could spay her. For the potential cost of the litter you could spay her ten to fifteen times over.

That is where my aunt's dog, Blackie, gains all her weight. Never over her ribs, it is always all in her belly.

I agree. It's not something that I want to do either- raising a litter and finding homes for who knows what mutt pups.

I'll go ahead and call the vet and see if they can at least look her over in the next day or two. How much do ultrasounds usually run? I just hate the thought of putting her through something very risky for her health if it's a false alarm.

Our pregnancy ultrasound is in the $40-$50 range. Honestly if you can spay a dog for that price either it's not being done properly with all the monitoring that a dog, especially a HW+ dog, needs, or it's some kind of charity that is funding most of it (or both). The latter I don't have a problem with, the former I do. Given all the problems that can pop up in a HW+ dog, monitoring is necessary.

have to say, seeing those pictures--I would think she may be preg. Not that I am an expert by any means--but there is a very definite change there. (sorry Laur--:( )

Ultrasounds depend quite a bit on the area, the market costs, and your vet office. For instance a spay at my local vet office using the knife costs $180 but getting a laser spay at the local low cost spay neuter office is $85. The market is usually about $110 on average for old fashioned spays and $200+ for laser spays.

Last time I checked into ultrasound they wanted $110 for the entire apt. I opted to wait and do X rays at the end.
