I used to think labs were too intense....and then we got Charlie. :rofl1:

They are awesome dogs. What's wrong with people that they have to say things like that out loud?

why people feel a need to make such a comment is beyond me--like them or don't--I don't really care--but why make someone else feel bad for owning a certain breed? People amaze me--and not in a good way.
I think I might have said "good thing you don't own one --they really are for the refined dog owner"--LOL.

i don't dislike labs (in fact i've really liked most i've met), but i really hate how they've been personified as the perfect dog and so attracted all the irresponsible owners & BYBs.

Good for you I would have said the same thing.
What a rude thing she said.
A lab would be pretty much on the bottom of the list for me to ever want to own. (Im a herding breed snob I think lol Not totally but just saying). But I dont hate them. I really enjoy other peoples (well behaved. but that goes for any breed) labs. Blaze has tons of lab buddies. who are all great

Eh, I likely would have said something. But then again I say I hate poodles all the time, when I see one,or anything fluffy:eek:

I have also been known to say I hate dobes, corgies, huskies, westies(seriously though!) and any basically anything that is driving me nuts at that moment. So don't really take it to heart:p

I know I point about how I hate designer breeds all the time in front of owners and I am sure it gets them riled up. But it is not the dog I hate, its the things that surround it-not a good way to explain it but you know what I mean!

Nowadays, with blogs, Facebook, twitter, and so on and so forth, many people feel that every least little thought that enters their minds ought to be published. Because they are so important, you see.

I don't see it has a problem of her being rude and such, from what I read she didn't say it to your face, she was probably saying it to the person she was with, and she can have that opinion of Labs if she'd like. I see it like people who say, I hate snakes or I hate bugs in front of others, who knows, whoever they say it in front of could be fond of bug or have a pet snake at home, maybe they aren't a dog, but they're still something. It's something I would have just brushed off.

Try owning a "pit bull". If all people said to me was "I hate pit bulls", I'd be doing ok. But instead I get to hear "All those dogs should be killed" and "Those dogs just turn on you" and "Those dogs kill more children every year than anything else" and my favorite, "You should have your children taken away by CPS before your dogs get the chance to kill them."

And to be honest, I've defended my dogs plenty of times even on this own forum.

"how dare you bring that monster to an event with so many children??!"

honestly, i don't find it worth the effort to respond anymore. i don't see anything to be gained by it. if people are curious about my dogs or interested in learning more, i'll run my mouth until i run out of oxygen, but for people who have nothing but hate? i just walk away.

There are plenty of breeds I am not a fan of but I would never mention it at the dog park! Even if a dog of that particular breed isn't there--never know who has more dogs at home they didn't bring or who knows what.
Oooh, I've gotten in so much trouble for saying "I don't like _____ breed" to someone that I didn't know had that breed at home. Now I usually just keep my mouth shut unless I really know the person. Or I say "I've never met one that I liked before," as you can make that sound like you're implying that their dog is the first one you've ever liked. ;)

A lab would be pretty much on the bottom of the list for me to ever want to own. (Im a herding breed snob I think lol Not totally but just saying).
LOL, it seems like IME and in this thread, most of the people who dislike labs the most are the ones who own herding breeds. :D I talked to a lady the other day who had an aussie and got a lab puppy, and even the dogs hate each other. I guess the breeds are just totally incompatable, LOL.

Not necessarily; there are many people on the Lab board who swear by the pairing of Labs/GSD's together. Sawyer and Virgo were a pretty good, if dastardly destructive, pairing as well. They wore each other out nicely.

But many herding breeds have their own mannerisms and many lines of Labs are just too bouncy, in-your-face "OMG HI!" types and *that* doesn't go over well with many herding breeds. They have their space bubbles and they'd like to keep them, thank you very much. LOL!

steve HATES black labs. he's bitten three dogs now, and all three have been black labs and all three were dogs who flew up in his face with no warning or invitation.

This is even funnier because I love labs and I "dislike" herding breeds. :lol-sign: Chloe is a Rough Collie/Aussie mix and after experiencing her puppyhood I swore up and down I would never own another herding type breed ever, ever again. Give me a Lab any day! :D

Again, funny because Rose (my Lab mix) absolutely HATED any Aussie type dog she saw (took her awhile to accept Chloe), because all of the Aussie's she came into contact with tried to eat her.

So maybe there is some truth to that. lol

Although, I have to admit...I really dislike ill bred Labradors. Every single badly BYB Lab I have met has been a neurotic nutcase with no manners and aggression issues (be it fear/offensive/DA/etc.). All of the well bred (or even "well bred" BYB) dogs I've met have been great.

After working in a kennel for so long, I really don't make blanket statements about breeds anymore...unless they are Weimaraners. ;) Hehehe.

Good for you

Well she was sitting right next to me. So in my opinion it was rude. I didn't look at her when I said what I did about herding breeds. I guess she could have allowed me to have my opinion without calling me rude and petty. For all she knows I thought we were playing a game of "What breeds do we hate".

Same here.

Honestly almost every herding breed owner I have met dislikes Labs. It always seems to be a "My dog is smarter than yours" mentality. I have had some people comment on how I can't understand because I chose "easy breeds" which makes me laugh every time.

But I could never own a herding breed. Well I could but keeping my sanity would be a different issue.

I think they are beautiful and admire them all. Just not for me.

I have yet to understand how people don't have filters. For pete's sake, you're at a DOG PARK - and Labs are popular.

Keep your thoughts to yourself if they aren't nice.

I think your response was quick-witted. :)

lol. Its just that I dont care for the whole "OMG HAIIIIII, I have not seen you forever, here is my tennis ball, lets place, OMG I miss you, Im in your face, OMG I lvoe you" attitude. I like a more out of your face and strangers face dog. Blaze is perfect for that, he ignores all strangers, doesnt even try to approach them. while I know most labs would just die for the attention lol. Like I said I enjoy other peoples labs (I let my good dress get SOAKED today while I cuddled a friends yellow lab right after he got out of the pond and sat on my lap lol). Just not a temperment for me

Labs rock! A lot of people just like drinking the Haterade. Sometimes it is lonely at the top (although if every Pittie was registered I think they might actually be the most popular breed)

Labs are on the top of the popularity list for a good reason. It hasn't helped the breed in a lot of ways but a very high percentage of labs are good dogs even when raised by dipsticks.
