BE HONEST... Does your dog get into the garbage???

I've been to my moms a lot lately, and if my broher pulls the bag out if the can he'll leave it in the floor, open, while he's colecting other garbage or changing the bag. Typical teen boy, sometimes he gets sidetracked and leaves it there for a While!
none of their dogs will mess with it, visiting dogs get into it though and it made me wonder about chazzers dogs.

Maddie will not mess with it, if I am home. But if it was left out and I left the house for a while she'd probably get into it. Depends on what food items are in it
Also, we have to keep bathroom doors closed, because Tucker's in love with toilet paper and tissues. Not to mention "girls products" :rofl1:

No the garbage is one thing my dog doesnt get into thankfully, lol.

They arent allowed in the kitchen so that basically prevents them from having any contact with the garbage anyway... although I do have a small one in my room that only paper goes into and they have never touched that but paper isnt really interesting I guess!

But they get into plenty of other things so its not like they are perfect or anything.

actually not usually. the only time is if there are chicken bones in there so we have to put something heavy on the lid or beezer will try to get into it.

but the rest of the time they don't bother with it.

OH but beezer does like to steal pieces of TP out of the bathroom garbage. GROSS

Do I need to answer this? lol

One of mine does, one doesn't. I'll give you two guesses.

There was a really memorable story about boarding Trey with the papillon breeders and him stealing the turkey out of the trash at Christmas.

Given the chance, probably. It was a huge issue with Molly but now none of our garbage cans are really very accessible (they have lids) so that takes care of the issue. When we're taking out the garbage though, if you leave an open bag sitting there, Lucy is quite the opportunist and she'll stick her nose in it.

Juno's never had access to garbage but, it is Juno I'm talking about, so I'm sure she'd tear through it if she could.

A couple years ago my mom picked a blanket up off the couch... and out flew a gnawed on chicken breast... yeah, Lucy pulled it out of the trash and buried it in the blanket for later.

Smudge has never shown any interest in the trash even when it is in really low cans. Has no love for kleenex. Cider is a monster. She has taken to finding my sister's panty liners, pads, etc and turning them into nasty confetti..

3ish years ago I convinced my mom to get a larger kitchen trash with a lid as I was sick of Cider digging in it..

Morgan has honestly never expressed any interest in getting into the trash can. (Thank. Goodness.)

The Kitty-Boy Brothers, on the other hand... We had to get a heavy-duty metal trashcan with a foot pedal and spring-loaded lid to keep the Ticheli-monster out. Even with that, though, he still knows how to hold open the lid with one paw while fishing around with the other if something smells good near the top. At least he can't knock the whole thing over anymore. That got old fast!

YES! YES! YES! We have to put this homemade cat weight on the lid so Rocky can't open it up. One time we herd this big thud in the kitchen, she manages some how to move that weight off to get into the garbage. But that dog LOVES food. If Im eating something and forget to share she will literally go on my head pawing at me and start salavating. lol That dogs main goal in life is food.

Neither dog has ever paid any attention to the garbage, but we have a can with an automatic lid. So it's really not ever available for them to get into. If the can didn't have a lid and they were left alone with avalable garbage, I have no illusions, they would probably be all over that, lol.

I can honestly say that none of our dogs have EVER got into the garbage.

Of course it might help that we are supposed to out the garbage out straight away but sometimes we (ok me) can't be bothered if it's raining or something and just put it in a plastic bag for later. None of the dogs have even tried to bother with this altho Ozzy will take anything else from anywhere LOL.

Even at my granny's where Fudge and I usually go at the weekends he has NEVER got into the garbage. It might just possibly be because it is under her kitchen sink but I like to think it is because he is such an amazing dog :rofl1: |The cat food on the other hand ...

The girls, never. The boys...um...yeah.

Their favorite is the bathroom trash when there are feminine products inside. It's nasty. We used to put the trash up on the top of the toilet, but that looks tacky. We got small heavy duty trash cans with the lid and foot pedal. They still get into it. So now we put the magazine rack on top.

The kitchen trash they'll get into on occasion, but not too often. We have a larger version of the bathroom trash can and they still either step on the pedal or just lift the lid up. If you turn it around though they can't get into it, so that's usually what we do.

Jack has an infatuation with q-tips. When he lived with me over the summer he never once got into the kitchen trash (which was in plain reach), but he'd go through the bathroom trash and scatter the q-tips everywhere, sometimes biting off the tops.

my kitchen trash is in the cabinet under the sink. i actually had to put child locks on the cabinet to keep the blasted CAT out of the trash. every once in awhile somebody'll get into the trash upstairs but it's a pretty rare occurrence.

Gunnar- never had a problem with him. Daisy? If she can get to it, she'll get in it. We keep it closed in the pantry, and since she can operate most doorknobs, we have a latch up high on the door that we lock when we go out. Bruzer can't reach the can and he'd be scared of it anyway.

Oh yes. We bought ones with latching lids to mitigate the issue, so she doesn't really get into it now, but if they're too full or there's something reallllly good smelling in there, yeah, she'll get into it.

Never when we're home, though. Only when we're out...

the kitchen garbage--oh yes, if there is any hint of food (including coffee grounds)! No amount of training has worked reliably--other than our telling them to leave it. But is we are not around, the garbage best be secured or I will find it strewn about the room. Not a pleasant experience. So, needless to say I have created a system to keep them out of it!

Nope, neither dog does...we keep our can in a cabinet but often pull it out and it's uncovered, they've never tried. My eskie used to occasionally pull stuff out of there, though.

Milo USED to go into my bedroom garbage ALL the time. All that's in there are papers and tissues but he loved to get them and shred them up. I bought a child lock for it, and he figured out how to open that in about five minutes. He doesn't do it anymore, thankfully, I think he just grew out of it.

Yes. The JRTs are very much opportunistic scavengers. Dekka and Kaiden can even open the lid. We put the jug of enzymatic cleaner on the lid, its too heavy for them to move. Thankfully they are only into food garbage. The whippets aren't so much into the garbage.

When we brought him home from the shelter a little over a year ago, we found out Buddy was a kitchen garbage raider and counter surfer extraordinaire. :yikes:

Fortunately he also trains very easily, learning most things with only a few repetitions. Since being trained out of both, he never does either anymore. At this point we can leave food out and he won't touch it. He does think about it sometimes though ... LOL. Occasionally when there's food out we see him looking at it wistfully, but all it takes is saying "Ahhh-ahhh! Don't even think about it." He has never showed any interest in bathroom wastebaskets since he was strictly a food raider.

Riley has never raided any garbage can, kitchen or wastebasket. He's too small to get into the kitchen garbage, and shows no interest in wastebaskets. He does get into other things though. (Like we can't leave pens or pencils on end tables because he will jump up on the couch and grab them ... and he's very stealth about it.)
