Oh. My. God. Where do I begin?

Because, as we all know, how dogs react with a robot is a clear indication of how they'll act with a real dog.

Because the only way dogs communicate is with their tails. Kind of like the only way humans communicate is with their mouths.

And apparently being docked impedes the ability for the remainder to wag? I know every nubbin I've ever seen is completely immobile. *rolls eyes*

I suppose animals with naturally-occurring shorter tails are also afflicted by this "animal kingdom stigmatism"?

Yes, because I know that Sawyer is constantly getting into fights because of his lack of a full tail. He's such an aggressive a-hole. Nolu already made my points for me.

Huh....interesting article....I guess everyone should watch out for the boston terriers. Apparently they must all have some kind of complex from being dissed by all the tailed doggies in the park.;)

I really have no problem with cropping or docking if it is done correctly. There are much more serious problems we should probably get worked out first.

Zoom, seriously, have a go at it.. there was so much more fodder in there.. but I already had too long of a post and was being such a jerk. But it was too funny to resist.

You know what, I actually have been wondering what they did with the robot. When it had the short tail it was clearly aggressive and vicious, but when the docked one was replaced by the long one I'm sure it was perfectly fine. So they basically had a schizophrenic robot. Would destroying the docked tail fix the problem (and would it be cruel to do so?) or are they stuck with a robot afflicted with Multiple Personality Disorder?

That article is histerical, what about JRTs that have 1/2 tails (there abouts) they have more than a nubbin? And how come JRTs with tails are no different behaviour wise than those with.

The reason JRTs are docked is not for damaging the tail. Its for a handle for pulling them out of holes. A long whippy tail is 1) hard to grab and 2) if the dog has spun in the hole then the tail is now likely along side the dog and not able to be grabbed. Yes it is something if you are not hunting and none of your pups will hunt then it is something that is not necessary.

What about dew claws? (now the pups don't even seem to notice these done at all, but most JRT dew claws are almost vestigial)

I personally prefer natural tails as it's the first clue to a dogs intention that I can see.
There is so much more to body language than tails, and often the tail is misinterpreted, and there are a number of dogs who will in fact wag their tail happily while they prepare to bite ya.

Well, did the robot become more aggressive?
:lol-sign:

While I'm not opposed to docking tails, I'm not a fan of ear cropping. When I worked at the boxer kennel, the ear cropping was noticably more uncomfortable for the puppies. They were constantly shaking their heads and scratching at their ears, and there were occasional infections and ripped stitches.

I have read studies that state that at a few days old, when the tails and dew claws are removed the puppy is not neurologically developed enough for any pain to have effects beyond the moment.

You got that right. I've had an AmStaff, and an APBT, and have never even heard them yelp at something that`s wince-worthy to even witness. Probably a defense mechanism against their occasional oafish clumsiness. LOL
LOL believe me I have thought about that. Tytus is the only dog I have had that will repeadily run into a wall he knows is there.

there is still debate about human babies too as to their ability to feel pain. THey are too fragile to handle the deep gas. I know how i felt after my hysterectomy. I know from Mary's face and sally and tate's that they too had that deep cored out ache..tho they were far better at getting up and walking, they still had pain tho they didn't cry out. All of that was necessary to keep more babies from filling up the shelters or the other horrors of overpopulation. WHen Mary ripped the skin on her breast wide open she didn't cry out, she was very still. But her eyes told the whole story, it stung, it hurt and i was awful sorry it happened to her.THe fact that she didn't scream didn't mean she wasn't feeling it. SHe expresses her discomfort in a very silent with a slight tremble, even the great pain with her pancreatitis. I wish i lived in a country where both were considered barbaric, where tails and ears were seen as part of a dog, not part to throw away. Just because an animal doesn't cry out as a human would or lay around and moan doesn't mean it doens't feel it. Many fisherman still state that a fish doesn't feel pain like we do, but the ones i have seen with tail congestion or dropsy look like they feel might miserable to me. Babies sleep hard when they are hurt. IT is a protective mode i think, a small blessing. It doesnt' mean we have the right to inflict it upon them to suit our own preferences in how we want them to look..to please us.

Kharma's tail has a distinctive slow wag of anticipation when she is thinking pleasant thoughts of scaring the holy Hell out of someone . . . . You have to know her extremely well to be able to differentiate between the "AHA, I'VE GOT YOU NOW" wag and the "you are so lucky to meet me" wag

Chloe's tail is almost ALWAYS wagging, but she has very distinctive wags... between Ooo Hooray its my family, and Oooo its a squirrel, and Ooo its a stranger...

i saw a rat once shake it's tail like a rattlesnake... and have seen two dogs do the same when highly aggigated...i am glad my dogs were able to play got your tail...the most favorite of all game in teh backyard that took stealth, and sneakiness..and was just oh as high a fun as possible. I have seen Vic play it twice at the dog park. Mary's backing up to things that make that resounding thump louder, boxes, doors, to make her point is a source of amusement as well.

After working at three different kennels over a span of 20 years i have only seen one broken tail and that was Jim's dog Garg, he was sitting pretty and one of teh boys thinking it was funny pushed him back causing his tail to crack near the base. I have seen many a bloody tip of tails tho from wagging in 4 foot runs :( I have seen ears from dogs that were left to flies ears so built up with scar tissue it made you cringe to see..borders you knew were outside dogs with no way to find relief. EAr cropping made no difference in that situation either. All i know for sure is i will think a happy thought each time i see natural ears.

I sometimes wonder what Ozzys tail would be like if it had been docked. Would it look like the little Aussie nubbin or the JRT stump? And as I've never seen an Aussie with a full tail before, I don't know where the little curl comes from either. JRT or Aussie?

I think he looks just fine the way he is though. Some breeds look better with a docked tail, and I prefer to look of dobes that are cropped and docked properly, having seen the natural dobes that do look "houndy".

Sawyer is such a cheat...he loves to grab on to tails and haul the dogs around for a bit and then run off. I can tell he's laughing his furry little ass off too, because he doesn't have a tail for them to retaliate on! LOL! And he's a natural nubbin too.

My boyfriend's Pittie will bonk his head off a closed door a couple of times as a means to indicate that he wants it opened. LMAO

Funny, he doesn't LOOK especially dumb . . . (and for the sake of the topic - has uncropped ears)
