I think it should be a matter of manners, rather than law. I think women should be able to breast feed their kids in public. I also think that, because it might make other people uncomfortable (here in the US) that they should be discreet about it. However, I don't think the law should be running around arresting or fining women for bresting feeding, whether discreet or not (and there are some cases of quite discreet breast feeding resutling in prosecution). It is not indecent beahvior and it is not obscene. Moreover, places like Facebook should not be censoring breast feeding photos.

There supposedly is a section of South Beach in Miami that is nude, but when we accompanied my husband there on a business trip, we never saw it. I'm sure the Miami people on Chaz would know if this is indeed true or if we were fed a tourist tall tale.
Use to live there, but I would only see topless women, never fully nude. I would see many europeans do it, but very rarely would I see Americans go topless. The only time I saw it was during Memorial Weekend.

I always wanted to do it one day to get rid of the bikini tan lines, but my ex wasn't much of a beach go-er and didn't want to go to the beach alone. I did however go to the beach in an brazilian bikini, suprisingly I got more positive vibes from it, but I'm guessing it was because it was Memorial Weekend and well South Beach is just full of party people during that time. I got compliments on how they liked my bathing suit, where did I get it from, and that I was very brave to be in public like that. Suprisingly most my compliments were from girls.

Well except one girl rudely was like ''um do you know your wearing a thong?!'' ...No I hadn't quite figured that one out when I put it on...plus its a bathing suit, I wouldn't go to the beach in underwear!

But its basically just a string in the back, so I see why people would think its a thong, but I explained to people what it was. And most where like well that makes sense it would be brazilian.

Its this very same one.......and I lost the top for it! But I guess it gives me a reason to go topless now!

I would see men in thongs too, but again mainly europeans.

The nude beach at Sandy Hook is not a myth, it's really there, nekkid people and all. Right here in unadventurous New Jersey. They play beach volleyball, and have clothed lifeguards on stands. I guess the funniest thing about this beach is that it is actually run by the federal government. Check out this description

I still stand by, "If you dont like it, Then dont look"..
I mean, If your looking long enough to become discusted. Close your freakin' eyes. I know some of you may think, Well why should I have to close my eyes or look away when they shouldnt be doing it anyways.. Well, Why should they not feed there child to accomadate you?.. Some people react the smae way about Fat people.. They just stare if *gasp* God forbid a Bigger person Wear a Pair of shorts (That ARE covering them)..Ive seen this. Just as much as Ive seen people have a problem with woman breastfeeding in public. They just stare and stare at them in discust.

To Most of us, we probably Get mad when you see people react that way towards something like that. And I feel the same when I see somebody react badley to a woman breastfeeding in public. I swear some people are walking around with broom sticks up there A$$ just waiting for the next thing to be utterly disguisted by. And cause a fuss about.

as a man who does appreciate the titilating aspect of breasts...
i absolutely have to agree that breastfeeding is in no way sexual and if someone finds it obscene or sexual they have serious issues. i am more uncomfortable w/ the way some people dress their very young daughters like hookers or dancers in a Madonna video.
i'm a very sexual guy but i still don't understand how a person can become aroused at the sight of breast feeding.
BTW my DW breastfed her dolls but neithe she nor any of her siblings were breastfed & she can't remember aver having seen it when she was little.

I dont want to be eating dinner and look over at some strangers huge tit.. just my personal opinion.

im not saying that all breastfeeding women should be banished to bathrooms or w/e. im saying that they should try their best to cover up or go somewhere private. if nowhere clean and private is available, and if the kid keeps taking down the blanket, then so be it go ahead. but I just think its common decency to atleast TRY

I work at a fancy restaurant and I know for a fact that it grosses a lot of people out because more than once ive had to deal with people asking to be moved because of a woman breastfeeding, and no, they weren't staring, its just not something they want to eat around. when you go to a restaurant, you pay for more than ur food, u pay for the environment..that doesn't include somebodys naked breast.

ive done everything I can, including asking the women if they would like to use one of our private and very clean party rooms.. 90% refuse. and most yell at me for moving those who want to move away. but what am i supposed to do? Im a waitress, they want to move away from something that bothers them, so i move them.

Im around women breastfeeding at the restaurant A LOT, 90% of them cover up with a blanket and there are NO problems.

IMO its not about being "prude".. its about not wanting to eat around somebody taking out their breast and some kid going to town lol

as for the doll.. w/e. lol i definetly wouldnt buy it. but i dont see the big deal

The women I know who breastfeed would all be offended at being asked if they would like to go somewhere private by their waitress. I know I was very offended when my MIL asked me to leave the room (I did have a cover on, though). I am part of a very pro breastfeeding, attachment parenting type group of women, though. They want to promote breastfeeding. They do not believe in hiding it. Most do not wear a cover, and really, I have seen many of them breastfeeding but I have yet to see a nipple. I have a much larger chest than most people, so I do wear a cover because I would be exposing quite a bit since my breast is larger than my baby's head. But, yeah, I'm not going to freak out and move or leave the room if my baby starts pulling the cover up (and I know you said you don't have an issue with that).

Yes, this. Why stare if it bothers you? That old woman who gave me the evil eye walked by a couple of times and just looked. Just go away. You do not have to look.

It wasn't a big deal 20 or so years ago when I was breastfeeding. Breastfeeding moms seemed to find a nice, quiet place away from the crowds to breastfeed. Covering up seemed the right thing to do in the situation, and it also seemed to keep the baby from getting distracted at all that was going on, making the whole thing go more smoothly. It was comfortable for mom and baby, and no one seemed to mind.

If my baby and I were home alone, I never sat at the dinner table to breastfeed. It wasn't comfortable. Even at home, I found the most comfortable place, and it certainly wasn't at a table.

I can't imagine that breastfeeding in a restaurant at the dining table would be the most comfortable place. It might be the best place to prove a point, but I would rather be comfortable.

This debate is always so bizarre to me.

Babies need to eat. The best nutrition for them is breastmilk. Both mom and baby are biologically programmed to carry out this natural function. It is for both of their benefit, for the benefit of their health and also their bond.

This is the way animals do it, this is the way humans have done it for thousands and thousands of years. Now that womens' bodies have been oversexualised to obscene levels this inherantly natural function has become "disgusting", "obscene" and "indecent".

No. Babies need to be nourished. Human women, like all female animals, have been designed to provide that nourishedment through their breasts. If that upsets you, grow up.

Or, at the very least, have some pity on the crying, hungry infant and the mother who is potentially causing herself harm by not allowing her body to respond to the stimuli it's designed to respond to.

Argh.

That doll is creepy, children should be content with pretending with their toys, this nonsense of HAVING to feed the baby is stupid.

As for breastfeeding in public. I am yet to see huge amounts of nipple and women feed regularly here. It has never really been taboo in Africa. I get annoyed when women do it in a way that demands attention. Having the tit out and making a fuss of lifting and positioning the baby all while yelling loudly that they are about to BF. Yes, I have seen that.
But, mostly I have seen women sitting and feeding their baby. Loads of times in a resturant. It does not bother me one iota. Why should they get up and go somewhere else when they are sitting at their private table with their friends/family.

As to the whole rest room argument, would you want to eat your lunch in a dirty toilet?

The problem is that you have to adapt to the society you live in... It's manners 101. In France you see women half naked on the beach and breastfeeding in public wouldn't be such a big deal, even without a cover.
Here, I guess the question would be, if you know that you're going to shock or make other people uncomfortable, why do it? That's what covers are for. A man wouldn't go shirtless in a restaurant, why should a woman show her breasts, breastfeeding or not? It's about respect. Whether you like it or not, 99% of people associate breasts with sex in this country, and it's rude to show them. But yeah, if people complain when you use a cover, it's their problem, lol.

About the doll, I wouldn't buy it. It's just dumb. Let kids decide how they want to feed their dolls!

Because nothing will ever change if you continue to cover up. I feel that if women do not cover up every time they feed their baby, then maybe in the future it won't be such a taboo. Why does my baby have to have a cover over his head to eat but a bottle fed baby doesn't? I understand people associate breasts with sex but that is their problem. It's ok to show an entire boob with the nipple covered in a magazine but not with a baby feeding? Ridiculous

Things only change when people try to make change. Why don't we go back to wearing long dresses and covering up at the beach, too?

The taboo isn't about breastfeeding... it's about breasts. Maybe once society gets over it it won't be such a problem to breastfeed in public, but for now IMO it just makes things worse...

I've noticed many women breastfeeding in public. many times they don't have a cover but you still don't see their whole boob just haniging out for everyone to see. I've seriously never seen a woman just flop her boob around in public for all to see. when a baby is eating most of the breast is not visible anyway. so I don't really get the issue.

it's a natural thing. I think it should be the womans choice whether or not to cover up. hannah was a very nosy baby so if there was any hope of getting her to eat in public she had to be covered so as to minimize the distractions lol. if a woman has to breast out and it bothers you it's VERY easy to LOOK AWAY. why must you stare at it?

on another note. this girl I know has an adorable picture of her daughter trying to breast feed her baby because that's what mommy does with her little brother lol. it's so cute.

breasts really aren't taboo, though...just nipples are. Like I said, it's perfectly ok to prance around in a tiny bikini as long as the nipples are covered, but breastfeeding is somehow not ok even though the baby's mouth is covering the nipple and the head covering much more of the breast than those tops cover
