I'm just wondering where everyone keeps their dogs when they aren't home.

Charlie and Nomi are always in crates as I don't fully trust them yet.

Brawt and Kai will stay out and sleep on the couch or if I know we will be gone for long periods or are expecting bad weather I will crate them. Brawt stresses out with bad storms and seems to do better if he is confined to a smaller area with Kai close by.

Poodles are crated in my bedroom. Schnauzers are let loose in bedroom. My mom will let them out in the morning (if I'm gone for some reason) and before she leaves for work.

All of my dogs are crated when we're not home. Ripley's too young to be trustworthy at all, and I think Keira would be fine left loose in the living room gated, but we haven't given her the chance yet. Dance, I found out this weekend, has terrible separation anxiety if I don't crate her when I leave. She much prefers the safety of her crate when I'm gone. All of my dogs adore their crates, so I don't feel bad at all leaving them in their crates. :)

My dog is loose in the house.

He doesn't steal food.

He doesn't chew my stuff.

He's fine in all weather and with all noises.

And he doesn't sleep on furniture.

And he's housetrained lol

So he gets the freedom to be loose. Also, I am pretty confident that he will prevent break ins... if they break in with a big GSD going apecrap crazy on the other side of the window... well, the almost deserve what they steal (if they manage loL).

The worst he does is he tries to open the back door, and he's succeeded a couple times. But we fixed that.

When he was a puppy, I would put him in the crate or on the sun deck with a sod litter box, depending on how long I was leaving him.

Sienna sometimes has free roam of the house, other times she is crated. She eats the cats' food (they are free-fed) so if I'm gone a short amount of time, I put the cat food up out of her reach. If it's longer, she gets crated with a kong full of goodies. Mostly she goes with me everywhere though.

Finn is crated, but he's also only 9.5 months old. He may earn more freedom as he grows, we'll see. If not, he does like his crate so I have no issues if he does have to be crated. If I'm showering or elsewise just doing something where he'll be unsupervised for 15-20 minutes, he can stay out with no problem usually.

My sons Beagles (until he takes them home, lol) are crated...cant trust them boogers. We dont use crates except for transporting. We have a room dedicated just to the dogs. It has large area built in, the smallest being 6X6 so they can sleep, have water, room to play, place to potty (papers) so no one has to be crated and forced to hold it when I'm not home to put them out.
Spoiled a bit, as they have the master bedroom converted, our bedrooms are smaller than theirs, lol.

Meg gets free reign of the house. She's very good about staying out of trouble. I suspect she curls up on my bed and just sleeps until I get home.

Mine basically stay.. Wherever they like! :rofl1:

Apart from Max, who isn't allowed upstairs.. For his own safety really..

But other than that, they can go, or be anywhere they like.

We shut the bedroom doors and give her free reign of the rest of the apartment. We'd give her the bedrooms too, but she likes to jump up and sit in the windowsills and bark at everyone who walks past...so it's for the neighbor's sake that we keep the doors shut!

Sport stays loose in Darien's room. He is very good in there. The JRTs are all crated. Bounce can be loose but is often crated, Dash is crated when we are not home.

Gunnar and Daisy get free range. Bruzer gets crated for his own safety as the 2 big ones can play rough.

We crated Daisy until she was about 18 months old, but she'd get so hyper about it that we'd come home and the whole bottom of the crate would be soaked in drool. So we weaned her off of it, giving her longer and longer periods of freedom as she became more trustworthy. We still have to "dog proof" for her- she will get into things othewise, but never anything major. Pantry door locked, dog gate across the steps going upstairs. Dining room closed off and anything she might want to destroy put in there- she likes my wife's baskets and will chew them. She's funny- she doesn't like it when we leave so we'll come home and she'll have taken all the jackets off the coat rack. Or she'll take the blanket off the back of the couch. Small stuff like that. One time she got a bag of tortilla chips- didn't eat them, just stomped them into dust and left them there, like an "I'll show you" moment.

Little by little, the "gates" came down to give Caleb free run of the house. Judging by where he is when we're home, he spends his alone time either in the livingroom or diningroom. He doesn't even go upstairs with us when we're home unless he's invited, and then he runs right down to our bedroom and waits for us.

Xena has free reign of the house. When she was a pup, she was crated when we left the house or when we went to bed. As she grew, she earned more freedom - we'd leave the house for maybe 30 minutes and not crate her - we'd start leaving her out of the crate at night. Eventually we simply stopped crating her. The crate is still set up as sometimes there is a necessity to put her there depending on the situation and sometimes she goes in there to sleep.

Till recently Cider was loose in my room, Smudge would be in a crate.

Now Smudge has moved up to being loose in my room, and Cider has the rest of the house. Doesn't seem to do more than sleep on the stairs, but she's still on probation.

The chihuahuas get full run of our master suite, which is probably a good 600-700 sq.ft. They have access to their crates (and even though they each have their own, Rylie and Chloe will both smoosh themselves together in the same crate!).

Rylie and Chloe could easily be trusted with the full run of the house, however, I'm terrified of the idea of them falling down the stairs and hurting themselves.

Tucker has shown that he is trust worthy enough to stay with the girls in the bedroom, but I wouldn't trust him in a non puppy-proofed room home alone. He likes to chew things still.

Rory is crated, and likes his crate once he's in it. He's only 6 months old and I would never ever ever EVER (lol) trust him alone in the house. He's fine for a few minutes at a time (like allie mackie said about Finn), but any longer than that he gets crated.
