When I think of "work" I think of what the dog was first bred to do. So that would rule out a lot of dogs, even mixes.
Just my opinion.
I sort of thought of it like that too. Hunting, sledding, protection rather than ob, flyball and dock dog.

I'm redecorating. Anybody want a Collie?
Sure, I''ll see how she is on some sheep and if she doesnt take too well to that we''ll try some agility and if she''s not too keen, some fly-ball and if she really doesnt want any high-action sport, we''ll try out competitive obedience and on the side do some therapy work!

Thats what most people *will* think when you say "working" Me thinks OC just wanted to cover herself by saying "depends on what you think of as working" seeing as how she is always a advocate for the "working bred" dogs.

so should I get Maya started filling out Applications? lets see what she is qualified to do... hmm Mcdonalds is holding "walk in Interviews" on the May 8th. hmm Maybe, but then again, I dont want her to get fat. So hmm maybe she could do some work at my dad's office, ya know answer phones and stuff. then she could pay for her own Canidae, toys, and treats. Oh and she could have health insurance to cover vet bills.... *sigh* whats next "only working babies are real babies"?

I'll take a lop eared collie decoration. Trade you for a lop eared sheltie decoration. Or I have smaller big eared versions, if you'd like. ;)

OC do you live with your parents by any chance? Because I know people on this board who have to work all day, pay bills, raise kids, etc. Some of them are even,...gasp...a bit older. Kind of puts a chink in the Let's go Round Up Some Sheep and later we can Do Some Obstacles routine.

Well, Lucy's a dissapointment, then. . .she hasn't yet taken down a whale but I'll fit a frame around her middle and hang her on the wall.
ROFLMAO!! I just got the weirdest mental image :D

Therapy's a job? Well then I have at least 1 dog! :p

Overall though I prefer the
train of thought, but whatever floats yer boat :D

That's awesome. I love to hear about older people involved in dogs like that. Isn't 'necessary' but it's generally really sweet.
She also shows conformation with one of them! She's a really neat person. She used to do agility, but well... she was having a hard time keeping up.

I took/take her signature to mean a dog should be doing something other than "looking pretty" though that can be interpreted in many different ways.

I still say it's harder to breed true to the initial purpose, and I commend the breeders that do it. Those that have altered the breed to fit America's lazy lifestyle won't get my support. If we look to other countries, the importance is placed differently, and where most who value the "working dog" place their importance also.

Give me a dog that can hunt any day over one that bounces like a maniac and is clueless to what a bird even does.

I can ship you one, Mafia. But I call the collie, matches our study. (Our uni mascot is a collie, though she's a sable. I can paint the collie decoration I suppose).
