So what about a dog that is a companion and nothing more for an elderly person?

You know what my dog's job is?

To sit on her butt all day while I cater to her every whim. To love me, to be my pal, to be my cuddle bug.

Sounds like one hell of a good job to me!

Hey listen, if Tosca could earn enough, i would be glad to send her to work. But alas, they aren't looking for another lassie. She could star in "Lassie Go Home".

those who are really nothing more than decoration...well...at least someone loves them :) I dont call them ""fake"" though ;)
There's a difference between decoration, and companion IMO. I don't think we have that problem, here, but I'm sure everyone's met or at least heard of an owner who's gotten (or gotten "rid of") a dog because it matches their furniture or walls...

If I just wanted a "decoration," I would have gotten a lamp or a painting. My dogs are my best friends, and are 3 extremely important things in my life. They are in no way "decorations." A painting doesn't cheer you up when you're sad, or go on walks with you. My dogs are far FAR more than "decorations."

Talk about expensive, messy, high maintenance decorations!

Here in this picture, they're lowering my blood pressure, another one of their jobs as working dogs. They're always there for me and as lap sitters and bed warmers, these real dogs hard to beat. They don't hog up the whole bed and they don't cut off the circulation when lap sitting. Real, working dogs!

Lowering blood pressure! Haha. I chuckled over that.

My dogs look at showing as thier job... they turn on in the show ring, or during show training, and turn off to couch potatoes when we arent "working".

I honestly over look petty statements like some users choose to make.

That's probably the best thing to do. Some people don't understand that there are different lifestyles other than their own.

But yes, Beau's job I suppose is showing, but as of now I've still got three bums in the house. Is it safe to say Nik's retired? :D

The old lady should get up and get her dog a job. You know, do some Rally-O with him, Agility, herd things with him, mow the back 40, get a stroke.

Gee she's dead but at least her dog worked.

I don't think rallycounts as work for certian people.

Actually I know the sweetest old lady- 70 years old does rally O and teaches it with her four toy dogs. She's so cute.
