LOL! I'm in Seattle right now and as most of you know, Lyric, my Doberman is either dog aggressive or dog reactive while on a leash. It's very embarrassing when he lunges toward other dogs, snarling and looking quite nasty. Even though I've been working with him to desensatize him, we only get to practice really, when I'm in Seattle a few times a year. I try to maintain sufficient distance and when other dogs are approaching on this heavily trafficed walking path by the water, I'll make a bit of an arc and click/treat as he maintains his composure. He does quite well as long as I pay attention and do things right.

Several visits ago, he met a little Poodle/Bishon mix down the beach where I let him go off leash. Nobody is around as it's a "private" beach. But this little dog's owner and I have sort of befriended each other and she comes out and lets her little dog play with Lyric. He just adores her. Sometimes she gets irritated with him and snarls and he backs off like, "Okay, okay."

He did meet one other dog here a long time ago, a lab/spaniel type mix...a boy, that he also liked and played with. It seems like he mostly likes little dogs best. And I notice that every Golden Retriever he sees, he's particularly ornery toward. He seems to like Poodles a lot though... or that type, large or small.

But here's the news flash. Today he met a standard poodle on the beach in front of the little dog's house that he at first barked at, but it was a "let me off this dam leash so I can go see her" kind of bark, not the usual all teeth, vicious bark. The three of us women were chatting and watching the dogs greet each other. Well, I didn't let him off the leash because I like to spend more time with the leash on and make really certain. And I thought it might be possible that he'd get jelous of this dog playing with his little toy girl friend. Anyhow, we got a little closer and I kept clicking/treating as he behaved himself. Then he went into a play bow and wagged and pounced with his slappy paws in the sand... wanting to play with her. But then the lady seemed to want to continue her walk so we parted ways. Anyhow, one more brownie point for Lyric. One more friendly encounter. Unfortunately, he didn't get enough time so that I could let him be rewarded with a fun time with the dog. That might have happened had we gotten to hang out there for another 5 or 10 minutes. But anyhow...Yeah! :lol-sign: (I know that you, with normal, dog friendly dogs think this is a ridiculous accomplishment. ROFLOL. But seriously....it's a hassle having a D/A dog! And any little sign of normalcy is a cause for celebration.):D

Ah from one D/R dog owner to another CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know how much work goes into training these kinds of dogs and when we are successful we are often not given the credit that is due.

LOL BB. Sometimes I think people look at him and think, why doesn't she do something to him...as I try to be calm and tell him how ridiculous he's being without making a big deal out of it... and sometimes they probably think that dog aggression is the same as people aggression. So it can be embarrassing at those times when I don't catch it soon enough and he lunges. Of course, I keep his leash very short unless there's no dogs around anywhere. And he has been pre-conditioned to getting fed yummy things when I tighten up the leash or grab his collar and act nervous so that doesn't tend to make him too tense. He's really excellent with people and can walk inbetween crowded, squished conditions when we're on a side walk with lots of people. But if I see a dog coming, OMG...."let's go this-a-way Lyric." LOL.

Yes Renee. I think I've mentioned to him that I really like Poodles and maybe one day will get one. So, being such an agreeable mama's boy, he's decided he has a penchant for pretty poodles.

VWilson...Lyric just turned 4 in the beginning of August.

Oh Lynn....I really can't take any credit at all. He's better, but definitely still a butthead...pretty inconsistant. Sometimes though, just lately, he sees a dog and is now looking up at me, like, "Ok...I see it. Now where's the treat?" LOL. Then he gets a bunch of chicken pieces. Just about the time he starts showing signs of a cure, it's time to leave the city and head back to the hills where he gets no practice to speak of. If a dog comes into our pasture and he's on the loose, he really doesn't do anything but bark or run after them a little bit. Then he stops and never really goes right up to them. There's just something about the leash. And plus, he was always fine in classes, even agility. Right now we're not doing any classes. I know you do all kinds of things with your dogs. What types of situations do you have a problem?

Grammy, it is weird how some dogs are discriminators. LOL. My Lab was a little d/a....not anything like Lyric. But she had a little bee up her bum sometimes. My Chi's aren't very d/a...they just yap. But my boy Chi is bear aggressive. LOL.

Thanks guys!:)

Glad to hear it dober :) Keep up the good work Lyric!

A question I have been wondering about. About what age do you think DA in dobes makes itself known? Orson is still fine with any/all dogs, he is now 17 months old and I would've thought if he was going to have issues that maybe I would be seeing some form of it by now........but maybe not.

Lyric loved every dog he met until he hit exactly 18 months of age. LOL. Then he started this nonsense. He was perpetually in classes too and was fine there. But these casual walks. Uggg.

OK...I just came back from another little walk and again. Grrrrrr. He is not doing that great. It seems to be some dogs rile him up worse than others and there are those that he ignores and the very few that he actually likes.

A fat Lab was walking by and wasn't even face to face and he attempted this lunging/snarling. The dog wasn't too terribly close, but I couldn't get further because I was trapped on a side walk, near a building...engaged in conversation with some guy telling me that he use to breed "them" and that my dog is a "King" Doberman and that my leather leash isn't strong enough to hold him. (it's been holding him for a long time and my 1000 LB horses could be controlled with reins or a lead rope as narrow) So, I couldn't manuver him sideways more and get more space between. So, no celebration anymore. :( He sucks! Now, I'm just going to have to start drinking or something anyway.:yikes: Nevermind the celebration.

But on a better note: At least lots of people commented on how "well" trained he is. LOL! That was when there weren't any dogs around and he was walking nicely and we practiced a few little tricks along the walk like sitting when I stopped and down, sit, stand, down, back up and stuff like that. Compared to other dogs who are dragging their owners down the way, I guess he looks good....that is...until.....:lol-sign:

YAY hopefully this is a trend? Oh and Kaiden, who loves other dogs for the most part on and off leash, dislikes Goldens or yellow labs. He is markedly different with them lol.

I know this all too well, having fostered a reactive bitch for 7 months. You celebrate every step forward, no matter how large or small.

Congratulations! One more positive, with lots of C & T is a HUGE reason to celebrate!

Whiskey was about a year and a half when he developed his bad tude but it only surfaces with unknown people. ACDs though are notorious for it. I really don't try to change that because he will never strike unless I have him do it or I am attacked or he is catching an intruder. He just is people leary. I have not seen him go after dogs but he lets them know if he really does not care for them after a meet.
