So I was at the dog park today and there is this woman that comes in whos a dog walker and usully comes with about 7 dogs. Anyways at the park I go to they have a smaller pen that can be used for small dogs, puppies or dogs with issues or generally whatever you want it for. This is where Duke goes. Duke has some dog aggression that I have been working really hard with him on for the last few months. So we go to the park everyday and he goes in the pen by himself and me and him play. Or when dogs he knows come they come play in the pen with him. Like Ive been saying he has made a huge improvment in about 4 months. He use to put on a nice little freak out show to about 75% of the dogs that would enter the park. NOw he maybe makes a scene once a week. Everyone that has know him for the 2 years we have been going cant beleave the difference. Anyways back on track. This woman comes in and asks me why Duke isnt in the large pen to play with the other dogs and I said hes very selective with strange dogs he does not know. And her responce to me was you know I can help you fix that. Anytime he goes to attack a dog you alpha roll him and force him down to let the other dog come sniff him. I just blankly stared at her and very politely I just said uhh no thanks I dont do things that way. And she just keep on insisting that it would fix him and he could play with other dogs and be fine and playing with other dogs is way better exercise than playing with me and on and on..... To each there own with how you train your dog but trying to basically tell me whats best for my dog when you dont even know the situatuion umm ya but no thanks. Sometimes I just dont get people.....

Oh yes you must love these types of people. I once met a poor lady who said she had left another dog park after being harassed by members telling her that training with treats is stupid and that she wasnt allowed to bring them with her and train her dog ( like hi this is a public area).

Im surprised that I've actually found an offleash park with owners who for the most part are responsible, watch their dogs and are very tolerant of other people.

And she is responsible for other people's dogs???????????? I wonder if these people know her training methods....

This is why I dont trust many other people to care for my dogs...even if it is just to walk them

Perhaps she needs to be alpha rolled. The other people in the dog park can come sniff her....

A lot of dog people are strange in that way and other ways as well, LOL. Some dog people, anyway. I guess she was just trying to help, but she should have respected your way, judging by the fact that when you have a dog, your training methods, etc. for him or her are completely your choice.

Oh dear lord, some people.... you'll have to tell your trainer/behaviourist about that woman.

A friend of mine seems to run into the most idiotic people at dog parks, so she quit going. They would tell her how to train her dog, yet their own dogs couldn't do a half decent recall, got into scuffles with other dogs, etc.

It is what a lot of people do when they have a "pack" of dogs, though. I have five dogs, and when they get into a fight, depending on what happened, sometimes the dog who started it is put in a submissive position but not in a dramatic, aggresive way.

But I do agree, I would NEVER trust anyone to walk any of my five; seeing as how some "dog-loving-dog-walkers" treat the dogs. *Shakes head*

I had an older gentleman who told me I was being mean for making my dog bike with me. If he only knew how far that boy can go. He told me it was much better for him to go for walks and not a run. I started smiling at him and asked him if he thought that dals "walked" beside the horse drawn carriages? Then my smartass daughter as we are walking out of the parking lot says to me "Mom maybe you should get I speed not putt along on Ivans forehead?" I told her no he needs a tattoo on his forehead that says I can keep up with you BUT can you keep up with me?

I as well have to wonder if her clients know her ways. But Im in no way saying she is a bad person I just dont agree with what she says. She comes in with like 7 very dog friendly dogs that cause no problems. I dont trust many with Duke, okay I only basically trust my dad with Duke. When I told her I was training him with the clicker. She was dumbfonded that I was training aggression through clicker training. And when I explained what I do she was like oh ya I guess that would work. And then continued with well if that doesnt work you should try the roll. Shes saying this as a woman Ive know for the years of me going to the park be like this is a completely different dog from 4 months ago. Duke was watching the dogs on the other side of the fence there was about 9 or so all barking and full of excitment and he stayed completely calm and watched, didnt say a word. I was so proud of him at the moment. Just to see how much he has changed and how much happier he is becoming.

It sounds like you and Duke are setting a fine example of what clicker training can do, well done!!!
Thanks adojrts. All the hard work is finally paying off. Hes never going to be a "dogpark" dog and be able to have free roam and play with all the dogs but that wasnt my goal. The goal was to just be able to enjoy our time in the small pen and not have him make a scene everyday and we are doing at great job at it.

I don't alpha roll, use to many years ago and found it doesn't work and certainly does a great job at not building trust in my dogs in me. I am at my lowest numbers in years, only have 5 jrts at this time. All out together 24/7 while we are home. Intact stud dog, intact bitches, plus a spay and a neuter. I know many people with packs of dogs, especially jrts which are very well known for same sex aggression. Interesting that the ones with the worst aggression problems are the ones that also roll their dogs.

But I will say one more thing. If it wasnt for this board I would have never known where to begin with helping Duke. I was lost for about 8 months and just didnt know what to do with him anymore. Cinnamon was the one that recommend a fantastic behaviorist to me and I am more greatful for that than she will ever know. :)

Agreed, this board is fantastic this board helped me and my Duke as well. ( Prehaps we should refer to our Dukes as Duke 1 and Duke 2:p)

I think it was crazy when I was standing outside a McDonald's with Padfoot waiting for my mom to come out with food and this old geezer stops, looks at me and says "You can't go in there with that dog." Uh... duh? No sh*t? What if Paddy had been a service dog though, then what? Dumba**. D:

Oh god. I don't trust anyone else on earth with Buster. Especially now that I have his loose leash training starting to work, I still have to be on it all the time and I know anyone else would let it slip and I can't afford that.
I wouldve had trouble keeping my mouth shut at all with her, I can only imagine the damage I could do to Buster by holding him down as other dogs approached. Our bond would be shattered, his DA would be just about unfixable if I did that I reckon.

Well, I would be waiting in line behind you for the smaller pen. Frankly I wouldn't take any of my jrts to a dog park for a free for all. I am lucky, I live on a small farm and have my own dog park :D Now having said that, I can introduce my dogs to strange dogs and they are fine but I also know the dogs and the owners. And I especially know how much training and control those people have on their dogs.
Dog parks are so unfair to dogs on so many levels, but in todays society what other choice is there for so many people.....
