It's still not a "large" dose, so I wouldn't get paranoid about it. That's 2 hours at cruising altitude too, so decent and climbs are different because of the change in altitide, so a 2 hour flight is probably less than that and I rounded up.

But I guess my point was if flying a lot, those are the people that should be most concerned with this machine. What it does, again, I don't know, I still haven't taken the time to look :)

But if you have to fly, and this machine adds much, I'd skip it. But that's me

Airport Whole Body Scanners Likened to ?Virtual Strip Search?
Mayo Clinic neuroradiologist Peter Kalina, M.D., FACR questions the use of even small doses of ionizing radiation in nonmedical applications. “The amount of radiation may be extremely small and safe, but parents have to grasp that their four-year-old child is being subjected to radiation. Some parents will be concerned,†he says.

Columbia University professor of radiation oncology and public health David J. Brenner, Ph.D., is uncomfortable with the mandatory scanning of untold thousands of pregnant women and children at airports every year. Brenner, an expert in low-dose radiation risk, embraces the ALARA principle that advocates use of radiation “As Low as Realistically Achievable.†Brenner notes that about 5 percent of the general population is radiosensitive, among them women who carry the BRCA1 and BRCA2 breast cancer genes, and individuals prone to ataxia telangiectasia, an inherited neurodegenerative disease that causes severe disability.

Kalina is concerned about a potential scenario in which a less-developed nation might adopt backscatter scanning technology, but fail to keep its scanners calibrated. “As a traveler,†he says, “I don’t know who’s checked that machine or equipment. Can I be sure there won’t be a larger dose of radiation coming from it?â€
Suit yourselves. If you miscarry your babies or they end up defective, or you get cancer, it won't bother the tin-foil hat people in the slow line a bit.

Oh, wait, we have socialized medicine now so we all pay for the fast line, non-paranoid people's medical bills plus pay for the scanners. Still, worse for you than the people in the slow lines. :)

I know most people don't care about the whole naked scan thing.. but that absolutely mordifies me to even think about it. So much so, that I'd re evaluate flying. I feel so violated just thinking about it nevermind having to experience it..lol I am so self conscious about my weight and the last thing I'd wanna be is the butt of everyone's jokes going through a scan like that. Not to mention how horrified I'd be to see my naked outline up on a screen for others to view. Maybe if I had a rockin' hard body I wouldn't care who saw what..lol

Forgetting the radiation part. I was thinking, who else can see you naked? People in the medical professions, and police, you can be strip searched.

You don't HAVE to go on a plane. Its not a right or anything. I am not sure how I feel but I doubt airports care. Some people will feel safer, some will feel violated so the net result is likely going to be no change to number of flyers.

Yah but you agree to the former and the latter can't be done without just cause/warrant. Or well, it's not supposed to be done.

And also it could be argued that if you want to get anywhere in a reasonable amount of time, you kind of DO have to go on a plane. Some people's livelihood depends on it. I mean you don't HAVE to drive either, but it's kind of necessary for the majority of people.

Anyhow:
"Love those gigantic tits" remark lands airport scanner operator in hot water | Gadling.com

Didn't take long at all.

i did want to add that they are NOT planning on putting up some huge screen for the entire airport to see...
this will NOT be visible by anyone other than the security personel sat there looking at a small screen (about the size of a laptop screen)
you wont even get to see it...

i know to the majority that wouldnt matter either...
but i do feel it needs saying that the enitre airport will NOT be seeing you "nekkid", itll generally be 1 person at a teim whos sole purpose is to stare at that little screen, pick out anything that could be a "weapon" and alert the security on the otherside...

I highly doubt that. You're not supposed to see the x-ray machine's screens for luggage either but all you have to do is be in the other lane and you get a free gander at all the images (which are impressively clear and detailed). It'll be the same for the x-ray machines unless they construct some kind of booth around it like the old fashioned cameras/football replay booths.

I recall reading somewhere (read: I have no source for this lol) that they actually are going to put the screen in an entirely different room. I'll see if I can find the article that was in.

thats what i heard too taqroy.

as for the bit tits comment...
now thats ridiculous, that guy hsoudl have been imediatly fired, not just issued a warning, its sexual harrasment plain and simple...

id personally have no problem with the scanner...
i would have a problem however if the person checking the image made an inapropriate comment, and after reporting it to supervisors find out all he gets is a warning...

i'd say the most effective way of combatting this would be to send personal e-mails to the airlines & tourism boards advising them you will no long use air travel and therefore will not be spending your tourist dollars elsewhere.

How would I feel? The same way I feel when I'm on the beach and I'm not trying to get a pale booty with a tan...IDGAF. I rather have that than have the wand beep because of my piercing, that would be embarrassing!

Imagine the shadow showing up on the xray screen then someone saying "Nice piercing down there" :yikes:
