Airport admits 'strip search' body scanners WILL show people naked

New 'strip search' full body scanners being trialled in Australia will show people's private parts, officials have admitted.

But to spare their blushes, the faces of passengers will be blurred.
Domestic travellers leaving Melbourne airport over the next six weeks will be asked to test the new security scanners that can see through clothing.

More recent...Airport full-body scanners face further delays over fears they breach child porn laws

The X-ray backscatter body scanner has been described by critics as a "virtual strip search."
The scanner is similar to one that was trialled at Paddington station in London in 2006 in direct response to the tube bombings in July 2005.
Similar systems have also been tested at Gatwick airport.

The new scanner is designed to show people concealing weapons - but it will show a lot more than that, airport chiefs have admitted
Cheryl Johnson, general manager of the Office of Transport Security, said:' It will show the private parts of people, but what we've decided is that we're not going to blur those out, because it severely limits the detection capabilities. '

'It is possible to see genitals and breasts while they're going through the machine, though,' she admitted

However, Ms Johnson said there were a number of measures in place to tackle concerns about privacy.
"The faces are automatically blurred and ... it's only a chalk-style outline, it's not as invasive as some of the other equipment that we've got," she said.
The scanner uses a low energy X-ray to reveal any objects, metal or otherwise, under a person's clothing, including body features.

The testing will be entirely voluntary during the trial, which is being undertaken to test how the new scanners would affect the flow of passengers through the security point.
"It does see through clothing, but it's not a photographic image, it's a low-energy X-ray that reflects off the skin," added Ms Johnson.
"The security officer that's looking at it is located away from the screening lane, so there's no comparison of the person walking through and the image.

'The images are not saved, you literally walk through, the screener hits a button to say clear and the image goes."
The new scanners will be tested at Melbourne Airport alongside 'next generation' baggage X-ray machines that can detect explosives in luggage.
Hand-held scanners that can detect explosives in liquids are also being tested.
Ms Johnson said these were a direct response to an alleged terrorist plot in 2006 to detonate liquid explosives on-board airliners.
She added all the scanners had tested well in laboratory conditions, but information was needed on how they would impact on passenger amenity.
The trial runs until the end of the November, and the results will be analysed before the technology is rolled out for real, possibly at domestic and international terminals.

What I love is how they say it blurs people's faces LOL. As if it was going to make any difference, considering the people who do it can see your face for real.

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate the TSA? Followed by . . .have I ever mentioned the extent to which fear of terrorists has totally screwed up our country.

Sigh.

Does this mean that I wouldn't have to remove my shoes/jacket/etc when I go through security? If it speeds it up, that's a nice benefit.

I KNEW IT! I knew the next step in "for your own good" was going to involve nakedness in some form or another.

*headdesk*

How about we go another route? Issue everyone on board a handgun for the duration of the flight. Any idiot suicidal enough to try something on a fully armed flight will never see the ground, but not in the way they thought.

True dat.

I could care less. Society needs to be less hung up on nudity.

In terms of the scanners, I'm less concerned with the scanners themselves and more concerned that the government thinks this will end terrorism.

see to me if you cant see "detail" (ie nipple) its not nuidity...to me those pictures look like just someone wearing a tight clothing lol...

if they want to see my 300lb ass "nekkid" there more than welcome to lol.
i think it could make for fun times..."psst mr security man, please ignore the nipple and genital peircings, i swear there not weaponized!"

however i can see it being a HUGE issue to use in the US

If people are looking at me naked in the airport, that's their problem.

I think that's his fly?

Likewise, i don't care. I'll even give them a little shimmy if they want. Whatever gets me through there faster.

:lol-sign:

It's not like they're putting it on a HUGE ass screen for the entire airport to see, it's just the security staff, so who cares.
I don't really, if they really want to see ME naked, um . . . ok. But lots of people will object, and really, is this necessary?

Tell you what, you can see me naked if i can keep my shoes on and keep my bottles of liquid . . .deal? Oh, and you manage to distinguish between embrodery scissors, and say, deadly weapons.

Forgot to mention, at least in airport security I'll be wearing a bra, so I'll probably look a whole lot nicer than if I was actually naked. ;)

I suppose for some of you, if there weren't x-ray machines, a physical strip search and gloved-probing, complete with K-Y jelly would be acceptable to you as well. (?) Either way, IMO it is an extreme invasion of privacy and not worth the safety factor. I'd rather be blown up by a terrorist than be humiliated in front of some pervert airport employee. I'm amazed at your complacency. I guess that's what happens when you're resolve is widdled away and gradually eroded by those more powerful than you.

If everyone boycotted the airports for 2 weeks, they'd put those things away...at least until the time came for a revitalizing attempt at imposing their will on you.

People....you need to stop lying down for other people to walk all over you. Start standing up for your RIGHTS. I know some of you really don't care about the right to privacy. Fine, you will be swept under the rug by your "masters" while they work on the rest of us. But for those of you who do care and see the danger in this, where this can lead....organize a boycott.

If it's underwire, you'll be put on the no fly list for trying to come through with deadly weaponry.

Oh thank goodness! You're probably right, LMAO........didn't even think of his zipper, it looked like some kind of wire device. Aaaaaaaaaand another reason I wouldn't make good security, ROFL........I would have tackled that guy, searched him, and found.........a ZIPPER! (never mind the gun strapped to his leg ROFL)

No dober, a strip search with KY would be a bit more personal and I wouldn't like that one bit, LOL (unless the searcher was HAWT of course, ROFL)

It's just an image of my body, I don't care about that.........I would much rather walk through that than put my children in danger from crazies on a plane. AND, I find that 'picture' to be less invasive than even a fully clothed pat down by security..........I don't want any random stranger invading my space and touching me all over (again, unless of course they are HAWT, LMAO)
