About a month ago, I realized exactly how much diet pop I was drinking.....

A coworker was shocked when she looked in little recycle bin beside my chair and there was like 12 cans in there from nine hour shift!!!

I've been struggling with heartburn for the last three or four years, gave pop up a month ago completely, I don't drink any pop of any kind and and as of last week the heartburn is gone!!!

Wow.......a 12 pack in a nine hour shift IS a lot  Glad you gave that up!

I average about 6 diet sodas in a week. Then of course I have diet snapple tea, and those sugar free drink mixes you add to a bottle of water. I think all the sugar free stuff is most likely TOXIC, and I should give it up too.........but then there's the calories if I drink regular stuff, and I'm not kidding myself into thinking I'll just drink water all the time, LOL What am I gonna do?

Wow, congrats!! So glad you are feeling great!!

I don't drink a lot of soda but about two years ago my office was right next to the pop machine and I realized I had started drinking a 20oz twice a week or so...gave it up for New Years in 2011...made it til summer than gave myself a Sunkist for my birthday (yeah, I know...) and fell off the wagon for a couple months...but have been soda-free for about a year now other than a bit of clear soda now and then if I have an upset stomach. Sometimes I just really crave a Pepsi though...that's really excellent that you were able to cut back that much and keep at it!! Best of luck sticking to it!!!!

I've been drinking water a lot, but mix in a few flavored waters and add flavor on occasion, I am sure they aren't perfect but I seek out aspartame free ones

Good for you! :D

I stopped drinking regular soda about 7 years ago and switched to diet soda. I've been having acid reflux issues since last December... I finally narrowed down the issues to my daily one can of diet Mountain Dew, so I haven't had a diet soda in about a month.

It actually wasn't hard at all for me to stop cold turkey... the acid reflux was TERRIBLE and it's so much better now.

Do you like seltzer? I LOVE it- I drink a ton of it because it's so much better than water on its own.

It's just sparkling water that's flavored- no calories, no sodium, no sugar. My favorite are the cans of La Croix.

Omg 12??!! I though at five I was bad. I'm down to two a day and I've us always a lemon sparkling water. They are really good after you get over the 'where's the sweet' reaction XD

I'm one of those people who would really prefer to drink water to anything else, but sometimes I drink seltzer and add a splash of juice to it. I figure a shot glass worth of juice isn't going to do much damage, but I suppose if you're drinking it all day long it adds up.

What about unsweetened iced teas, like herbal teas or something?

I quit diet soda 6 years ago after I read about aspartame... Now I have a regular coke once a week or something.
I like seltzer too. I just buy the plain bottles and I mix a splash of orange juice in it. It's helped a lot with the soda craving (not with heartburn, lol). Plus it's really refreshing.

Switching to stevia in my iced tea has saved me a lot of grief, although I'll admit I've never been big on sodas. I don't think I've ever even averaged one a day. At most, probably a couple a week. It's been ages now -- the last time I had one was the last time my stomach was grinding.

The stevia really seems to work, although I don't like it in hot tea or coffee.

Ya I was going to say I don't care for stevia in hot beverages at all. Although the kind that has a bit of 'regular' sugar mixed in with stevia (I have some here called sun crystals...it's 5 calories a packet and the only ingredients are sugar cane and stevia) is not bad in coffee, not great, but I'd imagine if I tried hard enough I could get used to it, LOL

I don't sweeten tea or coffee... So that's easy for me, I'm being very careful to not replace the caffeine with coffee as well...

I forgot to mention the first couple of days, the headaches were HE!! Bordering on unbearable

Caffeine withdrawal headaches are the worst. I used to drink 2 cups of coffee a day (starbucks too so more caffeine), and when I had my stomach episodes and couldn't drink it for 3 days it was awful. I can't imagine going from 12 to 0. Yikes.

I mostly drink tea now if I need something to wake me up... usually unsweetened but it makes me sick if I have an empty stomach, so if it's the case I put a little dot of sugar in it. Or with honey if I have a sore throat (which hasn't been the case so much since my nose surgery, but used to happen a lot). But at one cup 4 times a week, I haven't had to deal with the withdrawal headaches.

I am addicted to soda. I love my soda, and I do have heartburn issues and I take Nexium daily for it. It would probably help to give up the sodas (though I still got it on days I didn't drink soda when I wasn't on medication), but I NEED flavor. And if I didn't drink soda, I would just replace it with more sweet tea. I usually drink soda about 4-6 days a week and only 1 each day that I drink it. On days I don't have a soda I drink Sweet tea as my flavored drink. I do not drink coffee or anything else really so I drink water all the rest the day.

Yeah! Pop is so bad for you. Good riddance to that. One or two cups of coffee, unless it gives you problems actually is good for you...lots of anti oxidants. Caffeine withdrawl is the worst. I remember giving up coffee suddenly when I was preggo. And those headaches were unreal. You should have weaned yourself off gradually. But anyhow, glad you're feeling so much better. Heartburn is a bitch.

Congrats!
I loooveee soda but I seriously cannot imagine having 12 in a day!

If I go over 3 in a day, I start to feel fat and guilty, LoL.

For a while there, I was having at least one a day. But I'm down to probably 3 or 4 or a week now. Still terrible. I had stopped cold turkey for a while and felt so good about it, but alas, I love my soda.

There's just certain foods I feel like I HAVE to drink soda with. Water just doesn't go, or juice or anything else. I do drink a lot of water during the week though typically. Probably still not enough.
