For those that have neutered adult, male dogs... what was your reasoning?

I ask because my baby boy is going on 2.5 soon and he still has his farbles (fuzz/marbles :lol-sign: ). For the past couple of weeks or so.. he has started a high pitch whining that is just driving me nuts. He's not whining to get attention, or because he wants something.. he just does it. And I'm not sure if its because its now spring time and we can go out into the yard now - but he has turned into a hyperactive-raging bull. I'd say before the winter you could play a good game of fetch, or playing with his sister and he'd be set. But now he's is nonstop.. full out roaring around the house- knocking into people, etc.

Could it be because he's an "adult" now and hormones are taking over? I guess I'm kinda looking for ideas on what to do about him. Do dogs change in personality when neutered? I loved his (before) hyper self.. so happy and playful. Now he's just a menance. LOL.

Gonzo was neutered when he was about 1 1/2 years old... he was still an active dog afterwards, but it did seem to help tame his nerves, and he wasn't as protective or interested in escaping the backyard.

I don't think neutering alone will correct most behavioral problems, but it CAN help a lot! : ) Generally, neutered dogs seem to be much more focused on their owner and in-tuned... and less worried about other dogs, nearby females in heat in particular.

Usually the hormones kick in much earlier! If your dog is already 2 and a half he should be settling down and growing up a little. Maybe there is something else at work..but maybe not. Supposedly they can smell a female in heat 5 miles away.

Henry was neutered when he was 2years old. My reason was that he disease when the female dogs are heat (<- I don't know if it is the right word... I mean, the situation when the female dogs are smell good for a male dog, you know?). Henry don't eat, run away, was apathetic and wasn't my dog!
After he was neutered, all this was away. Now, he dribble when he smell a heat a female dog, but he obey and he don't disease.

Buster was neutered at 6 months, the reasoning. We already had 2 undesexed bitches, we couldn't have an intact male dog. We booked him in for a vesectomy, (somthign I would definetley consider for furutre boys, after I research more) but when we went to pick him up, they'd neutered im, still makes me mad. What sort of vet can stuff that up!?

Harry we wern't going to neuter, despite still having 2 undesexed bitches, the first heat we experienced with him was awful. Sophie had the have the morning after injection because while we were sleeping, 8 month old Harry broke the front door to get to Sophie.
The second heat he went through the closed back door to get to her, thats when we decided it wasn't worth the risk of ending up with puppies so we got him done.
We don't know if he actually got her either time, but we played it safe, plus he just changed when one of the girls was on heat. He was just meh, he was so cute with Mac when she was coming in though, she's the worst flirt in the world.

Buster has handled it beautifully, I think it added to Harry "post traumatic stress" or whatever he has.

Trey was neutered at the age of 1 1/2 as it was in the contract we signed when we bought him. He's the only neutered male we've ever had.

Ozzy is neutered. He was done at 14 1/2 months old because he started developing a marking in the house problem. Not that he considered it a problem, but we did. He did it twice, just a bold as you please. Marched into my sisters room and doused the corner of her bed. Twice! After that we made the appointment, and kept him out of her room until he had been fixed. No sense in letting it become a habit.

He is fine now, no marking problems, and I still have control over him when the beagle next door is in heat! Win win situation! :D

My old Bedlington was neutered at 6 months because he was a family pet with no need to ever breed, and we wanted to be able to enjoy life with him without ever worrying about him breeding a female. It was also in the breeder contract.

For any future male dogs, I may consider leaving them intact a little longer as long as they can handle it behaviorally. Once they are adults, they will be neutered regardless. I have no desire to ever breed, and I think it is a less stressful life for both dog and owner.

I am going to get Snip 'snipped'. I plan on getting him collected first, but he's being a little $hit lately and I am sure the extra testosterone is not helping.

My moms Cocker Spaniel Tucker is getting neutered next month if we're lucky. He is 2 years old (will be three in november) and lately he has just been MR. TESTOSTERONE!! Lately and he's just an all around pain in the butt when it comes to that.

everyone has sprin fever right now, Victor did the high pitched whine until this year,,he has matured in that respect thank goodness..Pepper does it too and she is a girl. I dont' think it has anything to do with gonads, just with the desire to run and play in the good weather.

Benji was almost an adult dog when we aqcuired him, and we had him neutered because he's a mutt who doesn't need to be bred, and we had no desire to breed anything anyways.

Milo was neutered at 14 months because he was being a BRAT, and also, i had planned on getting him neutered all along.

Ronin was just neutered at 4.5 years because... well, it was time to do it. He is getting older and I dont' want to deal with prostate issues, especially knowing his grandsire had prostate problems when he was about 6-7.

And frankly, those things weren't being used and never would be... why keep 'em, especially since Ronin has matured as much as he's going to, growth plates closed, etc.? ;)

Zeus was neutered by the Humane Society when I got him. I neutered Voodoo at a fairly young age (about 6 months), because he already had quite an attitude, and was becoming very dominant towards other dogs. I didn't think it was a good idea to keep him intact and let that keep developing furthur, especially since I had no intent of breeding him. Even neutered, he still has a very strong "male dog" demeanor--strutting, posturing, etc. I can't imagine what he would have been like if I left him intact.

Mushroom and Harv were both neutered when I got them (as adults), but even if they hadn't been, I'd have neutered them. I have no need for them to be intact. I do not believe there is any benefit to them being intact after they're fully grown and developed.

all ours were neutered right at 6 months. They are pets (and one's a mutt brought about by NOT fixing dogs) so there was no reason not to. I would have LOVED little roofus puppies, but I used to breed birds and I am well aware of what happens to pets sometimes, regardless of how well you screen. And I didn't feel like dealing with a bunch of intact males, either. Their urine STINKS.

He came from the HS and was already neutered. I'm going to fix my puppy and all the new puppy owners greed to get them fixed as well....just because there's no need for more litters.
