Do you have the same expectation level for all your dogs or is each one different? Explain. :)

I started thinking about this today and realized that each one of my dogs is different.

I expect more out of Kai than anyone considering she is the oldest, has had more training and has helped trained some of the others.

I used to expect alot more out of Brawt but due to health problems and such I've had to kind of lower the bar for him.

However, Nomi is about to step up and take over that role when we start obedience and agility together.

Yep.

Walker I have higher expectations from because I raised him from a puppy he. I know how much he knows and still learns.

Sci I have no expectations of these days. His brain is going. I can tell and my mom can tell.

They're each different, and different in different situations.

Gavroche has had more training and is more reliable, so generally I expect more out of him. However, Logan has a higher standard for everything because he'll eventualy be my service dog. I guess, for now I have higher standards for Gavroche, but eventually they will be higher for Logan.

Also, Gavroche is a little shy, so I don't expect him to want to go greet people when we go somewhere. Logan on the other hand loves EVERYONE so when I'm out with him I expect him to try to greet people. When they're together, though, Gavroche will want to greet anyone Logan has an interest in.

Also, I expect Gavroche to obey on the first command, and immediately. I almost expect Logan to try to blow me off sometimes, or be reluctant on commands. Of course he never gets away with it, but he sure does try :p

Hmmm, yes and no. I have different expectation levels based on how far I've trained each of them, BUT I expect the same level of politeness, complacency, and good manners around each other from ALL of them. I.e. - no stealing toys, no hairy eyeballs, no cruel play, no ganging up on another, etc.

Yes, and it is always changing as they complete whatever we are working on and their confidence builds.

I expect much more from my border collie, who is permanant and I've had since a puppy. The fosters I expect less. Partly because most people are happy with the dog that is housebroken and doesn't chew the furniture, so I don't need to have them trained at the same level. They also usually have problems because they are always from a puppy mill, may have been abused, malnourished, etc. I've had a couple who were quite alert and could have learned more, but sometimes simply settling in, becoming confident, learning basic manners is enough to get them adopted.

I expect Jose` to catch onto most new behaviors faster than Chulita will because I think he's smarter. Chuli just naturally takes more repititions to get onto something new. As far as manners, I expect them all to rise to close to the same levels. It's just that it might take longer for one to learn than the other on some things and visa-versa on a few other things.

I'm always apologizing to Daisy and Autumn, and telling them I'm sorry, but bad dogs get all the attention.

I expect a lot (I admit, sometimes too much) from Daisy, because she's just so smart and quick to pick things up. Autumn has this uncanny sense of what's appropriate behavior and what's not - she's been this way since a puppy, so my expectations of her are quite high - thankfully she almost always exceeds them.

Rage, I expect nothing from. Honestly, I'm trying really hard to like this dog, still.

Eerie... she's smart, and I expect her to listen... but her social skills leave much to be desired so I watch her like a hawk.

Liz I just can't seem to housebreak. Other than that she's wonderful... lol

I have different expectations and overall goals for each of my dogs at work. They all have distinctly different personalities, that alone makes some behaviors easier to teach than others. That's also why we have to take detailed training notes, so that we can remember where the dogs are so that we don't waste time relearning things.

It's also why we generally have the same trainer work the same dog until that dog is pretty solid with behaviors. EVERY interraction with the dog is a training session - even simply taking the dog out of his kennel or crate - so we don't really touch each others' dogs unless specifically asked. That also makes it difficult for volunteers to interract with the dogs, we have to be extremely specific in what we instruct them to do. There are several dogs that volunteers are not allowed to interract with at all, because that dog might be on an extremely strict training regimen and one unknowing person could ruin weeks of work.

As far as my own dog, Luna, my expectations on her are generally lower than for my service dogs. :)

For some reason I expect more from Juno, even though she's the naughty one. I suppose it's just because she's a quick learner and loves training that I expect her to master everything there is. I think I also unfairly compare her to Molly, which puts higher expectations on her.... for example, Molly didn't do X behavior, so Juno shouldn't either. And I've learned to just accept that Lucy will bark at everything that walks past the house, but I won't allow that from Juno.

I have like.. no expectations of Lucy lol. She just wants to be a lap dog, that's all she does, and I'm okay with that. Her barking and her shyness don't bother me so much.

Yes, this is a given in my house, but it didn't sound like it in my original post. You said it better than I. :)

When I had Spank still I expected more out of him. I have always had rather low expectations of Bandit because he has required very little training. He's never jumped up and punched a person in the crotch coming through the door. To keep Spank in line I had to have higher expectations otherwise he'd fly off the handle.

Romeo is totally held at a higher standard training wise.

My moms dogs are expected to know the following:
- Do not jump on the furniture
- DO not jump on people
- DO not get dirty
- Do not bark unless the door bell rings
- Come when called
- Greet guests politely, but not in an excited way. Sit about 3 feet from the door and accept being petted if they offer but DO NOT run at them. keep friendly/aloof dispositions
- No rough play inside the house
- No leash pulling
- No touching eachothers collars
- Do not run on the wood floors because it scratches
- Do not lick/scratch yourself inside the house

any other command and request is basically useless because she never asks more of that. In other words, after house manners.. nothing else is expected of them. And they are very good at their manners, they all follow these rules flawlessly.

People think its hilarious, to see my moms bichon about to lick himself and my mom is like
"excuse me mister! that is inapropriate behavior for public."
and he will then go to his crate and do it there

Romeo on the other hand is expected to know actual commands. sit, down, stay, come etc..
and we are a bit more leanient with the house rules for now because in my apartment, I dont care about half that stuff so hes not really used to it lol but hes starting to pick things up the longer we are at home

Now he even goes to his crate to itch/lick himself lol

I expect basic house rules..
1. Don't jump all over people
2. It's ok not to let people in the door unless I say "come in" and open it for them, perfectly acceptable to bark and growl up until then
3. No bodily functions in the house please
4. When told enough or to go away, I expect them to find something to do other than to harass me
5. If my hands are full and I"m walking in the door, no racing out and making me chase you...Lestat.

I expect more out of Lacey, because she's older and much calmer. Lestat still thinks it's ok to meet people "face to face" by putting his paws on their shoulders and getting right up in their face...we are working on this.

I expect the most out of Buster because I know he's had the most work put into him and I know his potential.
I already have high expectations of newpup and I don't even pick her up for another 12 days.

I expect more from the Collies than I do from the terriers, not because of ability, but the Collies just seem to absorb a new activity with very little training, while the terriers learn fast with minimal instruction. Dora actually performed a few rally exercises at a trial that she had never seen or performed before, and she did it like a pro. She's just good like that. I think I expect the most of Smidgen, though, as she's the most versatile dog.

I expect them to act like dogs.

On house manners? They usually free range and do what they like, they don't listen to me.

Like Sizzle, I expect all the dogs to have the same house manners. Greet nicely, don't jump, ignore when told, get out of the way, get along with other dogs that live in the house, etc.

I do expect different things out of my two than the rest. I expect both Liz and Blaze to obey a command when given. I expect them to be quite when told by me. Now, I expect differences between my two. Blaze, I expect to come when called no matter what. Lizzie, I know couldn't do this so I don't expect it. I expect Blaze to do most anything I tell him no matter what. Lizzie, I know doesn't work like this. I expect Lizzie to be able to chill out in the yard when people are over and be fine. Blaze hasn't gotten there yet so I don't expect it of him.
