13. ALWAYS pick up your dogs poop.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say it. I don't always do this. Parks, populated areas.. ya.
but here when he poops in like..the bushes near the forrest? lol nope.

14. Be consistent with rules

"Romeo come cuddle with me on the couch!"
"Romeo get off the couch your paws are dirty!"

I admit I give Quinn my scraps. Not when she's begging for them, but I always call her over and give her the last bite. I think bananas are probably her favorite, but she really like apples too. I always let her polish off my apple cores. I hold them and she nibbles on them with her front teeth like a little person, it's so cute.
This summer there were a few times where I'd let Dally finish off our cobs of corn. Not great for her but hey, just as long as it's not a routine thing. She loved them!

Rules? We don' need no stinkin' RULES! :rofl1:

I treat them with dignity and respect, love them, try to use common sense and encourage them to do the same (they may be better at it than I). We have very few real rules: no barking on the bed (I got tired of Tallulah bouncing on my head, barking out of the window, then having Kharma chastise her for it, when meant Tallulah got snippy with Kharma, MORE bouncing on my head as I separate the two of them from underneath), no fighting; when I'm not there, Bimmer's in charge and Kharma backs him up; eat out of your own dish; no putting your head under my arm and flipping it in the air for access to my lap when I have a cup or glass in my hand -- yes, that one DOES go for all three, but Bimmer's the worst offender. Stay in your own yard, no pulling on the leash . . . that's about it.

Switching foods right away... big deal... :p
Never lets your dog sleep on the bed with you/play tug/etc..
Don't let your dog walk ahead of you on walks
I share food with her all the time. Nothing terribly unhealthy, though. Although they both drool and beg from my Mom when she eats red hots, so I'm sure she shares with them when I am not looking
5,7,8,12, and 15 I'm guilty of! :p

and I do #14, but I don't really view that as being inconsistant (at least in my case). I think it's important for them to know the "off" command and to comply when you ask ;)

The only thing ON your list Fran that I don't really do, or don't ever see myself doing much is #13, picking up after them. Down on the farm is the only place I didn't pick up... the property owner was standing right there telling me not to pick it up... and it was really hard for me to restrain myself :rofl1: I must have issues!!

I just copy/pasted the ones I agree with of yours cuz I can't think of anymore right now.

1. Keep dog still.. no running/moving/jumping a week after spay/neuter.

-I've never done this either. After 2 days, he was fine.

2. Do not switch foods right away!..50% of each.. then75%.. you don't want to shock their stomachs

-nope... I just switch. Even when we visit my grandma's house and her dogs Kibbles n Bits are out or whatever, I let him eat it. I figure it's like a treat to him, like I get McDonald's sometimes, or whatever. He eats healthy 90% of the time so I'm not worried about a once a every few months deal.

3. Never lets your dog sleep on the bed with you/play tug/etc..

- this dog has been sleeping in my bed since I brought him home at 9 weeks old. I literally trained him to sleep on my bed because i would put the crate on my bed for the first 4 weeks, hahaha.

4. Don't let your dog walk ahead of you on walks

- I don't care about him walking ahead of me as long as he's not pulling.

5. Never use a flexi!

(I only use the flexi though if we're in a big park, or camping and on the beach, etc, to give him more room. the flexi annoys me when I'm in a pet store or on a regular walk, etc.

6. Don't give your dog junk food

I share almost everything I eat with Jackson, but it's all small portions. Plus he's so picky he doesn't like half the things I eat anyways. French fries, he won't touch. potato chips... won't touch. But if I'm eating mac&cheese, for example, I give him probably like a total of 3 noodles.

7. Do not BABY your dog! they are not little people

I baby Jackson in a way. I mean, he's spoiled rotten and I do baby talk to him. But he does get to be a DOG first and foremost. I def. don't care for the whole put your dog in purses, bags and strollers things. He is a doggy dog through and through and gets to get dirty, be outside all the time, run, play with other dogs, not stay indoors 24/7.

10. Let your dog adjust for a week before bringing people over to meet him/her
- yeah didn't do this either! Although I really wish I would because I think I did WAY too much within the first week and he's still really shy about people and I think the fact that I exposed to so many people at first was a big shock to him.

11. Don't encourage bad behavior.. no matter what.

- ha... Jackson is a really bad begger and I don't let him do it to other people but with me, I could care less if he's laying his head on my shoulder begging. I think it's cute.

12. Do not leave your dog alone with kids/other dogs (even family)
-Don't do this either.... when we stay at my dads, all 3 dogs (JRT mix, Dauchund mix and Jackson stay out together) and EVERY pairing of dogs we've ever had has been left alone together when we leave. no problems.

13. ALWAYS pick up your dogs poop.

- I'm not going to lie, I do this too. I always pick it up in the dog parks and public parks or any populated busy place of course. But if we're just in an area that nobody goes to... nope, I don't. I live on 3 acres of land with 90 acres of farmland behind us and I never pick up his poop at home. Stepdad I guess just runs it over with a tractor.'

I guess I just give Jackson all of these privileges because he IS such a great dog in general and always listens to me (ok, 95 percent of the time he listens to me!) so I bend a lot of rules for him. If I had a more difficult dog, I don't think bending these rules would be happening.

1. I always kept mine quite for 7-10 days after a spay/neuter, as even if they're feeling better you still need to give them a chance to heal internally.

2. I used to switch foods cold turkey, but now that some don't seem to have iron stomachs we take a few days to switch over. Plus with 4 dogs I'd hate to have them all sick at once.

3. Dogs sleep on the bed and play tug, but all know that when I say quit (or off the bed) they'll listen.

4. I prefer to let the dogs walk ahead of me, though they will usually get into heel position. We're also working on teaching them to walk ahead of me on walks (for when I'm walking multiple and I don't want them to pile up in say, a doorway.

5. We use flexi leashes, but no more than 2 dogs at a time and this is when we're by ourselves in the woods.

6. I'm not sure what would count as junk food, like people food? The dogs don't normally get food scraps, if anything they get to lick a paper plate clean.

7. Nope, don't baby them.

8. Punishment at the most, is ignoring them or crating them for a time out. I do raise my voice to get them to stop something immediately (like get out of the trash).

9. No routine exercise. They get to play in the yard with some random weeks thrown in depending on the weather. Mostly we just do training and use mental stimulation toys.

10. Never heard that one before, though there were no people to invite over to come see them.

11. I encourage bad behavior, I find it cute. Though its really only the schnauzer back-talking me and Lincoln being crazy, nothing like jumping up on people or stealing things or barking at people.

12. I would leave the poodles in a room with the little kids, but I don't trust Kiba (I'd leave her with the baby though) and Stryder is sometimes iffy depending on what they do to him.

13. I ALWAYS pick up dog poop if we go someplace. Doing it in the woods at my house is okay though as no one would go in their (unless its on one of our paths).

14. Rule are always consistent. We are doing NILIF even more now and they have adjusted nicely.

15. My four dogs fit me to a T, the schnauzers have mine annoying-ness to them and attitude, and the poodles are crazy and fun loving. I'm convinced when I die I'd probably come back as a schnoodle. LOL

I agree with Renee.

Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wisemen.

(though some of those rules are stupid)

I don't care where they walk as long as they don't pull.

I do keep them quiet after spays/neuters since I'm the one who has to treat everyone else's dogs when they overdue it and get swellings/ouchies/complications...so it would be really embarrassing if I let my own dog do it and had to explain it at work :p Plus, I generally see my pets' surgeries..and seeing your dog's internal workings tends to make you very protective of them:p

I'd go through, and answer all of these, but I pretty much break all of them to an extent.

However, the "clean up your dogs poop" rule, I don't follow AT ALL. EVER. I live in Tennessee...there are animals EVERYWHERE. Cats roaming all over the place, foxes, wolves, skunks, opossums, etc, etc, etc. They poop out there too, who's to say it was my dog? Chloe is a small dog, and her poop is tiny. If she goes while we're on a walk...whatever. It's in the grass, it's going to decompose into the ground anyway, it's good for it. And in my own yard, I ESPECIALLY don't clean it up. It literally disappears within a couple days, anyway.

That said, if I lived in the city or something, I think I'd have to clean it up, because it's concrete everywhere instead of grass. But I just can't imagine training my dog to use the bathroom outside, and then having to pick it up anyway...

That's Psyche's one and biggest rule. She does it all the time, and I hate it.

Another is "No barking AT me - that's rude."

Really, our dogs don't have a lot of rules to follow... sadly. :p

No tugging. Tug is encouraged from the day their eyes open! :)

Sleeping on the bed. This is a must -- it makes ME more comfortable.

Don't feed people food. Sorry, but we ALL love pizza here! ;)

Don't let dogs walk ahead of you (through doorways, etc.). Quite the contrary, I encourage mine to go ahead of me inside - it makes it easier for me to gather the rest of my stuff if the dog is already in the house. Same goes for leaving - if dog is outside waiting, I can just walk out and lock the door. Smoother transition than walking out, waiting for dog, then turning around to close and lock door.

1. Keep dog still.. no running/moving/jumping a week after spay/neuter.

As much as I can, I do follow this. It's sound medical advice to allow the incision to heal. But it's not always possible to do completely.

2. Do not switch foods right away!..50% of each.. then75%.. you don't want to shock their stomachs

Yes. My dogs do have sensitive stomachs, and I am careful about switching their food.

3. Never lets your dog sleep on the bed with you/play tug/etc..

Who came up with this idiotic "rule"? There's no reason my dog shouldn't sleep on the bed with me and play tug, although I do try not to allow both at the same time.

4. Don't let your dog walk ahead of you on walks

Again, this is a rule?? If they're not ahead of me, I can't see what they're getting into.

5. Never use a flexi!

Uh, seriously?? Where did you get this list of rules?

6. Don't give your dog junk food

When I stop eating junk food, I'll stop giving my dog junk food. K?

7. Do not BABY your dog! they are not little people

What qualifies as babying?

8. Do not PUNISH your dog or raise your voice. if they did something wrong, its YOUR fault

Yep, it is my fault, and I do try not to punish, but I absolutely will yell...blowing off the steam makes me feel better and my dogs learned to either ignore me when I yell or that it means play time, so not a problem here.

9. Dogs need ROUTINE. an exercise schedule is a MUST

The only routine mine get is that there's no routine.

10. Let your dog adjust for a week before bringing people over to meet him/her

Uh, why??

11. Don't encourage bad behavior.. no matter what.

Who is defining this "bad" behavior? If I'm OK with it, I'll encourage it. If I don't like it, I won't...unless it's seriously cute.

12. Do not leave your dog alone with kids/other dogs (even family)

Mine I don't, but they do have some aggression issues. But I see no reason for this to be a rule. Yeah, I do advise against leaving a dog alone with a young child, but even there, I've seen a few exceptions that can do it without worry.

13. ALWAYS pick up your dogs poop.

Absolutely.

14. Be consistent with rules

Consistently breaking them?

15. Only want/consider breeds that fit your lifestyle

The breeds I like do happen to fit my lifestyle for the most part anyway.
Other rules here:
No destuffing the pillows.
I am not a launch pad or a sheep.
If the crabby corgi snarls, you better back off.
And the special rule for Tyr: No malinois puppies!!

1. Keep dog still.. no running/moving/jumping a week after spay/neuter.

Or just do not get them spayed/neutered

2. Do not switch foods right away!..50% of each.. then75%.. you don't want to shock their stomachs

not perfectly 50% then 75 and such, but I do mix the 2 foods for a while, or else my dog is going to be pooping all over my house

3. Never lets your dog sleep on the bed with you/play tug/etc..

Rosey always slept on my bed, when she could get on it. She loves tug.. she knows not to use her paws ;)

4. Don't let your dog walk ahead of you on walks

Where are they supposed to walk? She walks in front... or behind.. or wherever she wants. I do not care

5. Never use a flexi!

Have used one all her life

6. Don't give your dog junk food

She LOVES chips! and ice cream

7. Do not BABY your dog! they are not little people

my dog is babied.. cause she is a baby, and she knows it

8. Do not PUNISH your dog or raise your voice. if they did something wrong, its YOUR fault

I try not to yell, cause she just laughs if I do. Better than punching her in the head.

9. Dogs need ROUTINE. an exercise schedule is a MUST

She has a routine, pretty much. Out 3 times a day for a walk so she is not energetic all over the house, sleeping the rest of the day. Works for us

10. Let your dog adjust for a week before bringing people over to meet him/her

I think we actually did this.. we do not like people at our house anyways.

11. Don't encourage bad behavior.. no matter what.

What is considered bad behaviour? We encourage her to bop the ferrets if they are attacking her

12. Do not leave your dog alone with kids/other dogs (even family)

She was alone with us all the time

13. ALWAYS pick up your dogs poop.

I am bad about this. In the backyard it does not get picked up, because the backyard is all hers. On somebody else's property it does, park it does... but like, the path, when she goes in the trees? Yah, not going to climb in there to clean it up. The unspoken rule is to clean up what you can see/will be stepped on, otherwise, leave it.

14. Be consistent with rules

Eh, I am consistant. She KNOWS she is not allowed up on the couch when she is wet, so that is really not being inconsistent

15. Only want/consider breeds that fit your lifestyle
If I want it, I will make it fit
Stupid text limit, I typed lots!

Now, that is a rule everyone here follows! If mega b!tch Collie mumbles, grumbles, or growls, you'd better take heed and do (or stop doing) whatever it is she wants ... ;)

No dogs on bed. I follow that rule. Mainly because my DH doesn't want a dog on the bed. With the fosters, I keep them off the bed and furniture until they settle in. Usually, I'll let them on furniture after the break in period. Most people expect small dogs in their laps, so it's not gonna be a problem later on. Some dogs should not be on people beds, do your own experimentation.

Mix food over time. No way. You're here, you eat what the permanent dog eats: raw

No tug of war. Yes, tug of war; use it as a training tool.

No flexi lead. I hate flexi leads.

All walks at the perfect heel. No, use long line work, calling the dog to the heel and releasing so that he gets enough exercise. I'm not running four miles every morning.

Don't let dog get ahead of you. Well, I let dog get ahead of me, then change directions. As soon as the dog feels the tug of the leash he has to put slack in.

Up to date on shots. Only as up to date as my holistic vet advises. Rabies current (every three years by law), but others get tapered off as the dog gets older.

No table scraps. What beats raw meaty bones? Well, carrots and other veggies roasted with meat. I try to keep these additions in the kitchen, but you know, you forget.

12. Do not leave your dog alone with kids/other dogs (even family)
This is extremely important to me. I don't understand the morons who leave children alone with dogs OF ANY SIZE. Making a joke out of it and being like lols hahahaha we don't follow this is just plain dumb. You won't be loling when one of those kids gets hurt by the dog or hurts the dog.

That wouldn't happen because,

1. There is a sidewalk, and the space of grass next to the sidewalk where we walk is very tiny, and no one would walk there (there is other dog poop there too, from other peoples dogs anyway) so no one would step in it.

2. Her poop is very small, and hard, so if you were to step on it (unless she JUST went) it would crumble up. If I had a large breed dog, I might treat the situation differently.

Besides, she very rarely poops on a walk anyway. I think it's happened like twice. She mostly just goes in my own yard, where it's not a problem.

Where I live, it's just an extremely uncommon practice to pick up dog poop in your own yard. It's biodegradable, and it disappears. If it doesn't wash away with the rain, it will go away when you mow your lawn.

LOL!! Me too! This one actually irks me to no end as most people have not seen the complications from it (like scrotums so swollen and painful the dog cant move, insides on the outside, infections, etc).

Rules at my house (yeah, im a rule person). In no order; no chasing cats; no jumping up on people; no jumping up on tables/counters; no getting on furniture; no stealing food; dont pull on walks; i can do anything and take anything from you at any time for whatever reason; no pestering me for attention when im done; no nosing me with food/glass in hand. Thats all i can think of. This makes it sound like Riley leads a sad and not fun life. I assure you he is fine!
