I was reviewing a video Nbc0 put together for her boyfriend after we picked up Navi and noticed that many of them look like they have the rear end of a rabbit. I've never seen this before and was wondering if anyone knew what causes it, or if it's something they grow out of? Maybe a certain breed is shaped that way? We don't know what they are for sure except that mom is an aussie.

This is the video. Skip to about 35 seconds in to see the puppies hopping around.

That has to be the cutest video ever! I have seen aussies that do that more often than any other breed.

It can indicate potential hip issues especially if it's from no motion to motion or it can just be nothing but a dog trying to run at a gallop.

If it continues or you notice the dog being slightly lame it might be worth an X ray when you knock him out for something like a neuter.

Navi didn't display the hopping, about half the litter did though which is why I'm curious if they'd keep that weird appearance.

I also wanted to add a lot of nbt dogs hop like that. I think it has something to do with the spine and pelvic bone structure.

I've noticed both puppies and kittens with no tails or short tails (naturally, not docked) seem to move that way. For the most part I've seen them grow out of it, but I'd say it'd be something to keep an eye on.

I have seen it before, in really rolly polly puppies. I wonder if there isn't a lot of room for their stifles to slide forward so its easier to move the back legs together.

I didn't watch the whole video, but I've noticed that a lot of my foster puppies do more bounding and gallumphing before they really learn to "run." It's not quite what I saw in that video, but what I've noticed is definitely a bouncier, more puppyish gait. I never attributed it to anything more than not quite knowing where their legs are/how to move them to run yet.

Tipper bunny hops in tall grass and snow but I assumed it had more to do with not liking the feel of it on her belly than anything else. (Tipper does not have a tail either.)

Also - cutest video EVER. I love it.

Interesting. They were pretty chubby, so maybe it's something they grew out of. In February her litter is having a reunion to celebrate their first birthdays so I'll get to see them all again and know for sure.

What kind of puppy is she?
Australian Shepherd X mystery. Mommy dog got out and went missing for a week. She came back on her own but had a little surprise waiting for everyone.

I'm guessing the Navi name is a Zelda reference? (Playing Skyward Sword right now)
"Hey, listen!"

I am also deeply submerged in Skyward Sword at the moment. Navi is most definitely named after the fairy.

Fun fact, Pit was initially going to be name Poe after the ghosts from Zelda and my username is an abbreviation of Skull Kid, my favourite character. The more you know!

Yes, I am a massive Zelda loser. Yay Nintendo!

^^^THAT!

And also this:

I've seen this too in puppies with no tails, and like others have said, in chubby puppies. They look pretty young too, they're probably also just trying to figure out how to run.

I'm certainly no expert in dog structure/movement, but I can say that Keegan - a smooth collie - runs differently than my friend's aussies. The aussies have a pretty distinctive gait. I don't know what they were like as puppies, though, but I don't remember Keegan bunny hopping when I met him at 8 weeks old.

You know; I just got my NBT Rat Terrier Misty on December 30, 2011 and she bunny hops. She also trots normally, gallomphs for a few strides normally and runs like hell normally. I'm wondering if it is a balance thing?

We take all the dogs for "long" walks (long for a baby) and I've noticed a distinct improvement in her gait as her walks/strength/energy has increased, so I'm wondering if w/o a tail for balance; their gait is all over the place?

I agree though; in an older dog; bunny hopping does often indicate hip issues.

SO CUTE!!!!! :D

And, for the record, those pups remind me a LOT of my neighbor's dogs. The mom is an Aussie/ACD mix ("Texas Heeler"), dad of the pups was a generic Lab/Pit/Hound mutt dog.
Picture of the pups when they were teenie:
