These three might be a bad example, since none of them are from quality breeders. Duke is not registered, from a byb. (I didn't purchase him from the breeder, I got him as a rehome.) Boomer is from a lab breeder breeding for charcoals and silvers. (enough said) and McGruff is also from a byb.

But... they are all purebred Labs. Although they all look like labs, they're all very different from each other.

I think Duke is a very handsome, lovely looking dog. However he is not to standard. Boomer would be a better looking lab if he were smaller, labs aren't supposed to be 100lbs, and if he were actually black. McGruff is closest to standard but he has a gay tail. Oh well!

I believe I've asked this question before. Mainly my reason is because I'm a huge nerd about almost everything and that includes dog breeds. So I love to hear people who know a lot about a certain breed talk about the different styles within the breed, their opinions on said styles etc. How are the different working lines of GSD's different, why are some dobes so deep chested vs others, why do European lines of various breeds look so different then what we have over here.

Lol basically giant nerd, if you know a lot about a specific breed I'm going to ask questions. Hopefully I didn't bother anyone

This is the right place. Here we revel in geeking out about that sort of thing.

and FG187, Pan is gorgeous. That's the style of GSD I like. :)

When Moxiecollies and I go walking together, people always assume Quinn (her harlequin rough collie) is the baby of Kaia (my white spotted tricolor borzoi). :rofl1:
:rofl1: Someone asked me the other day if Keegan's a borzoi. Maybe Kaia IS his mom!

Yep, I really think color is everything when people are looking at dogs.

At work we get a lot of labs - mostly black labs - from shelters in our training program. They all look VASTLY different, but from a distance, or when they're running in a pack together, it does get confusing trying to figure out who's who. We have to put different colored colors on all of them so that we can tell the difference quicker, LOL.

When Quinn was born and I was furiously scrubbing him dry, I just kept turning him in my hands thinking ohcrapohcrapohcrap, trying to remember if Strider was on the property at all when Jordan was in season (he wasn't! I swear!) lol

Ah, thank you! I was having issues finding good pictures.

And compared to the Seppala dogs from the Markovo line:

(Shango)

(Haakon)

(Ditko)

Zander for fun:

Reds/Coppers(like Zander) only occur in show lines, or lines that have been crossed with show lines. They didn't exist originally in Seppala's stock, it was all black based.

ETA: Here's a good website comparing Show type, standard/working type, and racing type: ClickyClicky
I loved looking at these! Beautiful! The first one looks very much like Violets dad in body shape/head/etc (Violet takes after him quite a bit).

There is some variation in looks of the Bohemian Shepherd. Depending on the breeding, you can usually get somewhat an idea how your future puppy will come out, as they seem to always look like one parent or the other. :p

I have 2 chocolate lab girls.
From the same breeder.
From the same PARENTS even, so they are full sisters.

Java is 21" tall and weighs 60 lbs.
Moka is 17" tall and weighs 49 lbs.

Java is a milk chocolate color.
Moka is a very dark chocolate color.

They also have very different heads. Java has a bigger, blockier head. Moka has a much smaller head.

Genetics are a funny thing.

Here's a good Lab comparison (since other than me, my whole family has them). All of these dogs have AKC papers.

Josey, my parents dog. Was 10 when I took this:

He's moderately sized (maybe 19-20"), weighs around 75lbs.

Rooney, brother's dog. Similar in size to Josey:

Ben, brother's dog (lives with Rooney). H.U.G.E. He has to be at least 24" at the withers, and is 100lbs.

One more to show how long his legs are:

Colt, other brother's dog. Also BIG, but not quite as tall as Ben. 100lbs. but he's also fat. Should probably be around 85-90.

There is a lot of variation in the Belgian breeds in looks and temperament. Most people think the black ones all look identical though ;) I'm constantly asked how I could possibly tell my dogs apart. Even my dogs who are related have difference in head type, expression, ears, coat, outline, etc.

Of course, I'm not sure any other breed has as much variation as PyrSheps. But that will have to wait for me to get my PyrShep National pictures sorted out :)

Whimsy! <3 She is my perfect Belgian!

There seems to be a lot of variation in the ES breed - depends on what they've been bred for I suppose. Some breeders tend towards a larger dog as they want a tougher dog for dealing with wildlife and tough stock - others like a smaller, more agile dog (like me!). Perhaps because they aren't a CKC or AKC breed and they are rarely shown UKC conformation breeders are more inclined to breed for what they think is the ideal farm dog. Quinn has a half sister who is 20" and 33 pounds, Quinn herself is 20" and 40 pounds, and has a half brother who is 50 pounds, while some breeds have females in the 60-70 pound range, and even heavier males. Coat, as well, varies a lot. Some dogs have a ton of coat, especially males, while some dogs like Quinn don't have much at all. Of course certain lines tend towards bigger coats etc, but coat seems like a little more of a crapshoot. For example, Quinn has one uncle who has an absolutely incredible, thick long coat (but so healthy and he is so nice and in shape, he makes me catch my breath while usually my reaction to a lot of hair is "OMG I could never!"), while other closely related males are much more moderate.

I see a ton of Yorkies who look different. They're not supposed to, of course, but again it's a matter of them being so popular and having a gazillion people breeding them.

But you've got your 2lb'ers and your 20lb'ers, floppy eared, erect ears, long, tall, short, bug-eyed, more terrier face. Sooo many different looks, even with papers.

when i had my Pomeranian, nobody would believe me that wasn't involved in dogs that she was purebred. she looked nothing like the little puffies people are used to. she was too large, her ears were larger than they should have been, and her coat fell more flat rather than being thick to the point of standing on end. she was also a very creamy biscuity colour, which threw most people off.

nobody ever would believe me about the variations within the breed. i ended up keeping a website handy at all times to link them to.

This is Grant and his half-uncle. Even in dogs fairly closely related there is a ton of varation in AmStafs.
