The Gatlinburg area will get you up into the mountains, but still let you go down into town and sightsee, play games, see things, and there's always driving into Pigeon Forge to hit the VAST array of outlets. Nice set up because you can go DO things (there's a world class aquarium, among other things) and then hie back to the cabin to quiet. There are even dog-friendly cabins.
