I've been too American houses lots of times? :lol-sign: I have a friend whos muslim and I was invited over to their house, but it made me feel a tad uncomfertable to be honest, because her family is very religious and I was there during prayer...

Siriously though, American homes are pretty different from Germany homes.

I had a lot of Mexican friends in middle school. We had a lot of sleepovers. My favorite part was that it was always guaranteed an awesome dinner lol. I remember once we had some kind of rice milk drink or something...made from rice, cinnamon...I don't remember what it was called, but it was GOOD and I wish I knew what it was so I could make it.
It's called horchata, and it's DELICIOUS!!!! My favorite, in fact. You can come and visit, and I'll make sure to have some homemade horchata here for you. Most mexican food places will make it for you if you ask, but a lot of them have started using a premade mix that just isn't quite as good. Still tasty, just not amazing.

One of my best friends is Mexican and she's introduced me to a lot of fantastic traditional mexican cuisine.

If you're still in CS, swing by La Michoacana if you haven't already. They have pretty good horchata, and their food is fantastic. Sadly, the one in Houston is not as good.

I've been there quite a few times but never had their Horchata. I need to go there again, it's been a while.

One thing about moving to OK I'm dreading is their lack of good Mexican food OR good Tex-Mex.

OMG...So I was watching this show on Food Network (well...technically I was still sleeping, but I was kinda watching/listening at the same time?) and I think they made horchata on there. And I DIDN'T PAY ATTENTION. Ugh.

Now I need to go find a recipe and make me some xD
Dude. I will totally cook you a rockin' awesome mexican dinner with horchata next time you head out here. :D

My best friend in elementary school was half singaporian and half norwegian, both parents were immigrants. Her house was super unique, because her mom had tons of crazy valuable antiques and giant gold Buddhas and stuff. They also introduced me to awesome foods, like duck feet and chicken feet. I never got brave enough to try a half grown duck embryo though.

Her household was the most unique, but I think that's because her parents were foreigners vs. just having different skin pigment. So the culture was very strong. The other awesome household I remember was a basque neighbor girl. Her dad was a shepherd in the mountains, both parents and some older siblings were immigrants. During the school year she and her nine siblings and mom lived in a little rental nearby so they could go to school. They were a super nice family. She loved coming to our house to get a break from all her brothers and sisters. It must have been hard with dad being gone so much.

Other than that, I've spent a lot of time with people from every continent pretty much. Just within our family even. My cousin's husband is from Ethiopia, and we're married into Asian families and latino families, etc. My great uncle encouraged it. One of his favorite things to say was "go marry anyone you want! make Hitler roll in his grave!"

Pretty much everyone around here drinks milk with dinner, except our house which drinks soda because I was allergic to milk as a child. And soda is aweful for you so we were all soda addicts, I finally stoped like last year in an attempt to loose weight. Then my brother stopped because he wanted to be healthy, he was the biggest addict of all, so then we had to buy less soda and so the rest of the family cut back too. I don't drink milk though, I've tried it once and wasn't a fan.

I'm sure I've been to a few, but the one that sticks out the most to me is the Indian family who lived next door to my grandmother when I was a kid. I'd go over there and play with their daughter sometimes, and they would always have the most AMAZING-smelling food cooking!!! XD

When I lived in Winnipeg I lived in an Italian neighbourhood for a while. The food was plentiful... I was a kid and thats all I remember.. well that and being chased by a stick by my friends non english speaking toothless mu mu wearing grandmother across the lawn..

actually the strangest thing (in my eyes) i've encountered is here in connecticut, I visited a friend (she's white) she invited me to dinner

and everyone was drinking milk.. with dinner.
I was just kind of like.. um.. what is going on here?! lol
I thought that was what most people drank with dinner (unless you are breaking out the wine lol) Around here its likely the norm. I remember thinking it strange to go to my inlaws. They serve tomato juice with dinner. (ewww I hate tomato juice, so they serve me apple juice instead)

I was just going to comment that one of the weirdest combinations I'd ever seen was someone who drank milk with pizza :rofl1: Then there's Charley, who likes chocolate milk with a Reuben sandwich. *gags*
I know someone who drinks milk with spaghetti and it grosses me out! XD I'm white and I don't drink milk with my dinner. I drink it in the morning, sometimes during the day, or with cookies. =P

With my dinner, I like sweetened iced tea mainly. Sometimes soda. Sometimes juice. If it's cold out I'll have hot tea, or hot chocolate. =)

Oh, and milk is the BEST with spicy foods.
^THIS! We LOVE (and always serve) a big tall ice cold glass of milk with CHILI! *drools* it's the BEST!

We go through milk in this house like...........well, like WATER! Seriously, at least 6-7 gallons a week and that's bare minimum! We'd go through way more if they could but I do have to set limits for budgeting! LOL I normally get 4 gallons on grocery day (cause the fridge only holds so much) and we end up going out for more in the middle of the week :)

None of my kids have ever had a broken bone, 4/5 have NEVER had a single cavity either..........so milk could have a whole bunch to do with that, IDK hehe

Since Fran turned this into the 'milk' thread, I had to throw my 2cents in about it.........ROFL!!

I drink milk whenever I feel like it, pretty much. It's usually just some random time during the day but I'll occasionally drink milk with dinner.

Normal dinner drink is iced tea.

Ewww, milk *gags*

The weirdest homes I've been to have belonged to white people. A friend of mine's parents served hamburgers without buns to be dipped in A1 Sauce like steak :yikes: And another one's parents served fish sticks *shudders* with mayo *pukes*

Let's see... for racially different homes, I've been to a black home (my dad's goddaughter is black), a Dominican home (friend in high school), Puerto Rican homes (friends), Cuban home (friend from high school), I'm sure there are others.

I have been to the homes of Chinese and Japanese folks (Chinese mother, Japanese father), Mexican, Indian, and black.

The only one similar was the black home.

BUT! I think that's because the others were straight from their countries, and not American-born. So, their cultures were different.
I don't know that it's the race so much as it's the culture. American culture is, or can be, extremely different from those from other countries.

I have some friends who are from an island in Micronesia, Chuk en Ipar. Very cool to be around them! Nech married a local girl. One of the best parts of summer is when Nech hosts a big cookout for the 4th. He's got several cousins, nephews, an uncle or two and various and sundry relatives here (strangely, all male) and they boat everyone out to an island in the middle of Cherokee Lake, camp for several days, fish, cook, swim and generally live the island life. I love seeing them all wearing their native clothes -- a long, batik printed cloth that's wrapped as a skirt. Even Charlene wears one.

And the food . . . . O.M.F.G. To die for!

Top it off with the fact that they are some of the most decent, kind, upstanding, hard working (Nech's often had 3 jobs) people I know and it doesn't get any better.

We drink water... Always have. My brother, mum, and i are all lactose intolerant. I've never been to dinner at anyone's house where milk was the main beverage, it's always water. In fact the only thing we use milk for here is baking, and occasionally it's put in someone's cereal.

As for households of someone of another race? Can't say i have been. It's a very white and native area and i don't have any native friends really.
