As it stands now, the only places I'd really be interested in getting a Fila from would be a woman in North Carolina or bringing one in, probably from Mexico, although there was a guy on here in France whose dogs I really liked. I'm totally disenchanted with most of what I see from the people who are breeding Filas now.

My first Golden was bought in US as there were no good breeders then in Canada .

I can relate with your statement. I personaly would import a dog in before purchasing anything local. There are way to many breeders that show no proper intent when breeding.. Its generaly about money here in Michigan and I am quite fed up with the mess as it stands.

Thank you. North Carolina. I couldn't find a breeder in Ontario who would work with me as I am youngish, and at the time had no accomplishments with dogs to my name yet. Hopefully by it's time for dog three I'll have an ATChC on Cider, and have showed Smudge some more. Though I have such a good relationship with his breeder, I may just got back to NC for a future dog as I'm happy with him.

Altos, don't you have GSDs?

I'm planning to import my next spitz from Australia as there just simply aren't any boys here (well, there's two, father and son) that I want to base a breeding program on.

Of course I'd always rather go local for dogs, if the dogs was what I wanted and I had trust in the owner/breeder, then I'd import in a heartbeat.

Yes, I have one german shepherd Altos is 14 yrs old a true wonderful friend and companion..I have looked all over for another german shepherd and can not find one in this area. I have decided to import directly from europe..

I am a bit of a fuss bucket when it comes to purchasing my personal dogs and I think Altos has played a large part.. in that search..I will never be able to replace the old man but I'll be darned if I just go for second best.. :) or become satisfied with a poorly bred german shepherd..

depends, can i get what i want locally or not? just because a certain breed is available doesn't mean the dogs are what you want.

The only place I would import a dog from is Canada. I fear the cost of importing from anywhere else would cost too much. Also, I'm not interested in any rare breeds or serious working dogs so I doubt if there would be any reason to import.

I guess if the domestic breeders all had unhealthy dogs and someone outside the country had healthy lines I would consider it.

As far as the dog itself goes, I wouldn't have any issue with importing from another state or even country. The part that concerns me is shipping it in, I have heard some horror stories of pups being shipped in, lost, banged around to the point of injury, etc :(

But ultimately, yes, I would import if I found a particular dog/breeder that I really wanted.

My next dog will be purchased here in The Netherlands, and sometime next year I will be going back to the states for a few months with it in tow. Sofie I guess you can say was imported, but I purchased her while living in the states and brought her along.

In Westies, I haven't seen anything extremely impressive here (then again I don't go to a lot of shows), so I will probably stick to the states IF I ever get another one.

I have no qualms with importing, there are some breeds I would stick with in the states, and others that I would go looking elsewhere.

i dont think so.
well maybe, if i was looking for a working GSD, i would travel to germany and pick him/her back and bring the pup back with me (i want a sable)
i dont like puppies being shipped alone that far and i like to SEE the breeders place, parents, ect..

Depends on the breed. Newfie I'd get locally (very local in fact) but other breeds I don't know.

Does Sierra count as an import? Her rescue 'imported' her from Ohio ;)
totally off topic--but I didn't know Sierra came from Ohio! Maybe she and Wilson ARE related---:rofl1:
