Interesting that someone who is signature shilling a dog training book exhibits such spectacular ignorance about dogs . . .
Apparently you didn't remember my post, it's MY personal list... I already stated that i'm pretty aware that they're not ALL used for protecting. I'd appreciate less diva comments too. Also, how do you shill a free report??

You're going to have to grow a thicker skin if you're going to spam web forums with your signature links. :rolleyes:

Yes, to me it does. I honestly considered banning you as soon as I saw it, but your threads have been so much fun :D

I guess we can't all live on forums w/ cute dog swinging signatures, I apologize
Apology accepted. Enjoy the forum.

How about a pack of chihuahuas? Ever seen Beverly Hills Chihuahua? LOL.

I definitely like Fran's idea! Snakes need to be added, too... I'd stay FAR away from a house with loose snakes everywhere. lol.

Personally, a 9 year old with a softball bat is more terrifying to me. I've been hit in the nuts on more than one occasion, had my ribs busted and got a concussion from those little evil doers.

Okay, so the real poll options for guard dogs should be:

1. Spiders
2. Emus
3. Snakes
4. Chihuahua Pack
5. Soft ball team of 9 year olds
6. Chuck Norris

I voted for the GSD because I think they are the most popular. As for the best guard dog in my personal opinion: a dog that barks. As for the best guard animal overall, I'd have to go with the giant spider.

I would vote for geese. My family had geese when I was a little kid those are some scary animals and they bite hard. Only problem is they are not good at differentiating family from strangers! We had a mean a** bunny too, those things kick hard enough to shred skin.

I wonder why new members feel like crap all the time:rolleyes:

Which breed would that be? And what "professionals"? :rolleyes:

:rofl1::rofl1::rofl1:

Goats. Amazing how effective a good billy goat can be. Donkeys too.

:hail:
the GSD is the only one he listed that is used in large numbers by private security companies that offer guard dog services. the other breeds used in large numbers by such companies are belgian mals & dutch sheperds. this is because private companies usually follow the lead of military & police. not that the other breeds haven't been used professionally because they have. in fact i used to be aquainted w/ a lady that used a BMXrott for just this purpose.
i agree w/ the billy goats. my uncle had one stick a horn through his hand.
i haven't personally run into any human aggressive donkeys, is this common?

if someone really wants to learn about guard dogs a simple google search will turn up enough websites to educate them sufficiently to know what breeds dominate the landscape and what is causing people to back to nonherding breeds. in short the answer to his question could have been found in 1 search and a couple of hours of reading web pages.

Google anything about dogs and the first ten websites that come up are FULL of false info. I hardly count wikipedia and dogbreedinfo.com as helpful websites. A lot of people who aren't so great at computers and don't frequent forums don't know how to search and stuff. Some people just never learned how to learn, so they *gasp* learn by asking questions. Being a smartass just leads people to wrong information, where the people writing it are too dumb to be smartasses and consequently, too dumb too write a decent article on dog breeds or anything for that matter.

This is for everyone not only is it incredibly rude and downright MEAN to make fun of people and their posts, it doesn't help ANYBODY. There are plenty of places in Chaz to make fun of each other and the morons we encounter in day to day life who wouldn't even bother trying to learn about improving the lives of their dogs. So why don't we try to NOT ridicule and bash the people who are taking the first step to become a responsible owner by researching the breeds they're interested in or posting and asking for help and advice. In this thread and many, many others.

ETA: I hope the OP finds and chooses a breed that will fullfill his needs as a guard dog and fit his lifestyle in every other way and finds some forum somewhere full of advice as good as chaz's has without the rudeness of it's members. And I hope his dog becomes a wonderful example of their breed, especially if it's a breed commonly discriminated against, and shows plenty of people how wonderful these animals can be *emphasize on* When placed in the right home.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!:hail::hail::hail::hail::hail::hail::hail::hail:

I love how being rude to new people and assuming the worst is totally acceptable behavior here. Im so sick of it. And then lets make the OPs original question/thread a giant joke with stupid pictures. :rolleyes:

God forbid every person who joins here isn't a dog expert. No one should ever come here and ask questions (its a FORUM). Nope here at chazhound our members will just jump down your throat about what a "Dumbass" you are.

Lovely guys

I too hope the OP finds the right dog. And a forum that actually tries to educate him instead of humiliate.

I took the poll to mean out of that specific list, which would be the best guard dogs. Not what are the best guarding breeds available. From that particular list, my opinion is that Rottweilers and GSDs are very good protection dogs. As far as guarding things where the human isn't around, just all by themselves guarding some junk yard, no, I don't think they're quite cut out for that. But for a family/house situation, those are formidable protection dogs. (generally speaking, of course) The Cane Corso and Bull Mastiff, I don't know that much about. I've read though, that the Cane Corso is a VERY good protection or guard dog. If you do a Google search and go to the breed clubs sites, read everything you can about the breeds you have in mind, that would also help you. And go to a show or someplace where there are lots of those dogs and talk to the owners....get a feel for them.

I agree that Pit Bulls probably aren't the best unless they bark at strangers. They seem to really like people a lot. Your protection type breeds have a tendency to have a healthy suspicion or aloofness toward strangers. Another good protection dog is the Doberman. But again, do your research and lots of it before getting any dog.

I voted for Rottweiler from your list. But remember, most of these dogs from the working group require an experienced, knowledgeable dog owner. They can be too much dog for someone who is new to dogs. And a poorly trained, poorly socialized Rottweiler is a ticking time bomb. And that goes for many breeds.

Personally, I think any dog that barks to alert the owner makes a fine watch dog. No, they may not be able to attack or back up their threat, but normally, bad guys are scared away by the attention a barking dog will cause. My Doberman is gone now and all I have are the Chihuahuas and let me tell you....they know how to bark. LOL. And I am well armed and know how to shoot. :D So there you have it. No need for some bad guy to shoot or knife my dog as he goes for his throat. A lot of bad guys these days carry weapons and I wouldn't want my dog to get killed....won't do either of us any good. So, an electronic security system hooked up to the police and/or arming yourself, learning how to handle a gun, imo, is the best protection.
