We have decided that with our schedule regarding having kids etc. that it would not be responsible to breed them.

The main motivation for breeding was to keep a puppy and now we can't do this and wouldn't be able to take puppies back if needs be it would be very, very irresponsible to breed.

So. We are taking the plunge and having my guy done. He is 5 now so I'm also not comfortable leaving him in tact for much longer.

No puppies for us = heart broken me. :(

Travis doesn't have the correct temperament either so I feel better about it. He is physically gorgeous but he is fearful. So yeah. I still feel bad for the fella.

Why would you breed him if his temperament is off?

However, I hope his surgery is boring and uneventful.

Didn't you try to breed them during Riley's most recent season? They probably didn't breed for a reason, you know... I haven't heard of dogs not breeding. Much more of the opposite problem. :p

I cannot imagine raising a litter while you have a baby, and I think the breeding didn't work out because it wasn't meant to be. So it sounds like you're making a really good choice! You could still find a nice stud for Riley once the time is right.

Poor Trav *hugs* feel better soon, buddy.

what? You've never heard of a breeding not taking? How odd. It's not exacrly rare... though i guess people don't really talk much about the breeding that didn't take

Not a breeding not taking, but dogs refusing to breed. Wasn't that what happened... they didn't breed? Maybe I missed something.

Nvm I just looked it up and it didn't take.

Because my breeder feels his fear issues are trauma related. (I'm not going into the trauma he endured for respect for the surviving partner of his previous owner) and I am contractually obligated to breed them. If she asks, he had an enlarged prostate.

But hey. Thanks for the judge truck.

Not that I disagree with neutering the dog (I have an issue with breeding unstable dogs, regardless of reason), but if this is the case, it's probably not something you want to be posting online. Also, if the dog came from an ethical breeder, I would be open and honest with the breeder about it rather than lying. I would be livid if one of my puppy buyers did that to me, for the simple fact that they were lying to me, not necessarily because they decided they wanted to neuter their dog.

No, judging would have been me calling you a bad "breeder" from the start, or making a back handed comment about something else.

If you don't want people to possibly ask questions...maybe you shouldn't post it on a public forum?

Oh yeah, thanks for the smart ass response. :)

She is 87 years old and has no internet. I offered her breeding rights to Travis 9 months ago and she hasn't taken me up on it and I also would tell her his prostate is enlarged to not disappoint her because the only one I am legally obliged to breed is Riley and SHE wanted Trav to be the stud. I'm sparing and old ladies feelings.

Wow. Just...........wow. Thanks for reminding me why so many people don't bother with this forum anymore. Especially as I am on my way to drop my dog off for surgery that is breaking my heart. So done with this place!

She may have no internet, but if she's a "reputable" breeder, could she not possibly have other puppy buyers or friends in the breed who do and could potentially see this thread? After all, you purchased a dog from her, and here you are.

I'm sparing and old ladies feelings.
I don't think going behind her back and lying about what you're doing is the right way to go about it. If she's a good enough person that you respect her and care for her feelings, then she should be a good enough person to take your feelings into account, as well as the issues with the dog, and not have a problem with you neutering him, right?

He's your dog so I wouldn't stress it too much. If after 5 years she didn't use him - sorry - ship has sailed.

That said I probably would have said something to her before jumping to that point as a last ditch - now or never - just to satisfy the contract..

Sorry that last litter didn't take - it happens. I wouldn't let it get you too down.

I hope the surgery goes well, I wouldn't worry too much about the neuter, it's really easy for the boys!
((HUGS)) I'm awaiting a puppy from a litter now and I know how heart broken I'd be if the breeding didn't take, I can't even imagine a breeding not taking on a litter with MY OWN dogs
