Even a very messed up dog can make a great trial dog (if the dog wants too)
Ferret was a JRT who was stuck in a crate nearly 24/7 for the first year of her life. I don't even think they took her outside. She was the most neurotic dog I have ever met. (also the only dog I have ever met that truly would work for praise alone) You would ask her to sit.. she would sit-pee and go hide under the computer desk. I would clean it up, call her she would come pee and go hide again. She was sooo worried about everything.
I worked with her training to give her confidence. I find dogs who are this messed and stressed benifit greatly from training. As long as you keep it simple the dog gets lots of rewards and gains confidence by knowing what is expected. It also fosters the relationship with the dog. I did agility with her at home. I entered her at a fun trial.. she freaked and ran back to the car. So I did more obedience stuff with her. She got her CD easily and was HIT getting her last leg.
We eventually did a couple of AAC agility trials. No she never Q'd. BUT the big happy grin on her face as she ran beside me was soo worth it. She now lives happily and as well adjusted as she can be with a good friend of mine.
If a dog who was that messed up can overcome her issues.. just about any dog can, with time and patience.
