Basically Jules, I agree with you. I do admire tastefully done small ones ( while at the beach ) like a butterfly or a dragon , but I too can't think of one ... I don't see me with a dog paw print.

It is all personal taste.

I think if people decide they want a tattoo, then they should wait a year, and then if they STILL want one - go for it. Rather that than do something you regret.

I defiantely want a tattoo. As soon as I can afford it, I will find a GOOD tattooist, and do it.

Many people talk about the age thing. To me, even if I grow to dislike a tattoo I get (which I won't as I am thinking it out veeery slowly), surely I will always looks at it, and think of when I got it. It will take me back to that time in my life, and remind me of the person I was, the things I was doing, and how I felt then.

I think that is a great gift you can have, to draw beautiful art on yourself. I think tattoo's are beautiful PROVIDING they are well thought through pieces done by someone who is GOOD at their trade.

But even something UGLY to me, often means ALOT to that person. And who are we to judge what someone should do to their own body?

I respect that some people have nothing done to them. I respect the fact that people get all sorts done!

In fact, I think the only thing that bugs me is seeing babies and children with ear piercings. They should make that kind of decision for themselves.

I agree with you! It bugs me to no end to see a baby with a piercing!

Tony (hubby) has 2. One on each of the upper/outer part of his arms. They can be easily covered with a t-shirt with sleeves but are open for public viewing if he goes sleevless. :)

I don't remember what age he was when he got them, but it was between 1995 and 1999 when he was in the Navy. That would have made him between 19 and 22.

One is a tribal design that he made himself. Since he isn't artistic at all, and the design took him about a year to finish (and is the only really good looking artistic thing he's ever done in his life) he decided to make it a tatoo. It looks exactly like a Native American tribal design and it goes all the way around his arm (band-like).

His other one is on the opposite arm (same area) and is the state of Georgia with a rebel flag inside the state. He had it done, I believe, in South Africa with some Navy buddies. He loves the state he was born in (Georgia obviously) and the rebel flag (Colored in) is in honor of his love of the South.
*It has nothing to do with slavery or anything like that, just a symbol of the south; no more, no less. At least for me and Tony. It means different things to different people.*

btw, I don't have one yet but I've wanted one for quite a few years now. I think I will get it on my calf (in the summer so I am wearing shorts). I believe I want a black/grey wolf head with the moon behind it and a couple of wispy clouds passing around and in front of the moon. I plan on getting it as soon as we have the money to spare.

Oddly enough ,the morning paper had an article ... Poll : 48% of American 18 to 29 are tattooed or pierced (beyond earrings )....24% (18 to 51 ) are tattooed. Other findings ...People who drink,do drugs, have been jailed or forgo religion are more likely to be tattooed . Same hold for piercings. Nearly 1 in 4 with piercings reported medical problems, including skin infections. Same amount for those with mouth or tongue piercings -- reporting chipped or broken teeth. For tattoos, 13 % reported problems healing. The study is set to appear Monday on the Web site of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.... the most in-depth look at tattoos since their popularity exploded in the early 1990s. Should be an interesting read.

i have two tattoos. the first one i got for myself for my 21st birthday. it's a butterfly on my right upper thigh. when i was 16 i wanted a tattoo in the worst way, so i made a deal with myself that if i still wanted one on my 21st birthday, i'd get it for myself. i chose the butterfly for the symbolism of change and freedom.

i also have a star tattooed on the inside of my left wrist. i used to be a bad self-injurer, and the first place i cut was the inside of my left wrist (i was 14 at the time). when i quit, i counted the days with stars. nine months after i stopped, i got the tattoo. it's very much a part of who i am, and although it's awkward to have people ask why, it's prevented me on numerous occasions from harming myself. and yes, it can be visible if i choose, but it can also be covered by a wristwatch or a cuff bracelet. i'm not allowed to have visible tattoos at work (though i get away with my nostril stud).

i love tattoos. i love seeing other people's tattoos, but i wish people would slow down and choose what they're getting for a *reason* and not because they walked into a studio and saw it on the wall. it becomes part of your body, part of who you are. that's, at least to me, not something to choose lightly.

we'll i have a naval ring and a tattoo, dont do drugs drink in moderation and have never been to prison. what a lot of people don't realize is that piercings depending on where it is can take 10 times as long to heal. my tattoo will be healed in 2 weeks. stomach ring took over a year. i'll never get another piercing just because they take so **** long to heal

Pics.

I've never been to prison :D HAHA, I have tried drugs, nothing extreme, but don't do drugs anymore, well advil but..you know what I mean. I *rarely* drink, maybe 1 every 3 months... Maybe..

THe one on my thigh really can't be seen unless I'm wearing shorts or something and you only see the bottom 2 symbols. My butterfly you only see if I'm wearing a lower cut shirt and my ankle, well you see it if I'm not weraing socks and shorts/skirt.lol

This is my butterfly tat:

The only 2 id get

1. A howling wolf
2. Portraitized pic of my old avvy

Both have reasons behind them, and have been thought through, But besides that nothing. I dont mind if people have pierced ears, but eyebrows, noses, belly buttons etc I consider shrapnel (a foreign piece of metal sticking out of a human body)

I've never been arrested or anything like that either. Never did drugs. How hubby has been but I wouldn't say he has them because he was bad in his younger years. He chose all of his for personal reasons and spiritual reasons. I agree everyone should think long and hard about what they want and where. Afterall it's going to be there the rest of your life. Better to make it something that has meaning.

PixieAs I said my friend is a tatoo artist. It's true that everyone has higher/lower thresholds of pain. When it comes to tatoos I'm a wimp, but I put up with it, *lots of cursing*, it seems to really help LOL.

I was under the assumption that my ankle would've hurt the most, it's around tendons/ligaments/bones etc. It hurt but not half as much as my chest. Apparently chest and your "ditch", the inside of your elbow are two of the worst. I know tonnes of people with tats on their back and neck and they said all it really was, was a numbing vibrating feeling that you get used to within the first couple minutes.

The best way to get through a tatoo fast is to TALK to SOMONE! Preferable someone you don't know, I know it sounds weird. Get them to ask you questions the whole time, where were you born how old are you etc. It's funny cuz the first couple times you get silly questions wrong, like i'm 17 err 19... But it really helps take your mind off it.

My motto has always been live and let live. My girls and I were in Toronto for my Mom's 85th birthday ....after putting Nanna to bed at her retirement home , the girls met some other " kids " on our hotel floor and knowing that I prefered " partying " under my roof ... many came in and out during the evening. One boy was almost ashamed to come in . He was COVERED with tattoos ...His face showed skin, but everything else seen was ink.... he even admitted all except his private part was covered. He was not proud of it. He really was so nice and I felt so sorry for him. I would say, he was about 30 to 35 . His first approach to me was not be be afraid. I wasn't. He added that they all were done during his " rebel" years and he wished he hadn't done them. He couldn't cover them up ... unless he wore gloves ,a scarf around his neck and ear muffs. Could he get a job ??? Only out of the public's eye. Yes, this was extreme ... but I think of him often as he had a heart of gold.

grams- I've got two friends like that. One has been to prison and got most of them "inside". He's totally ashamed of them. Even if it's 100 degrees outside he'll still wear a long sleeved shirt! And the other one has tatoos on his face and head and anywhere you can think of.

He's now spending $250 every couple of weeks with the whole laser surgery thing to get them removed. It looks painful, but apparently after a couple of trips they'll be totally gone. Costly though! You pay to get the tatoo, and then you pay big bucks to get rid of it!

I can remember when I was a little girl...."The Tattooed Man "...was part of the Circus' Freak House. Maybe that's why they freak me out today.

Jules He's only had 3 sessions out of 5 or 6 and it's barely visible. It's true on some people it won't dissappear but others it can. I'm sure by his fifth session you won't be able to see it, although, your skin is quite pink for a couple of weeks.

I''m planning on getting a tattoo! Have an idea of what I want now I just gotta get it on paper and wait for the right time to have it done (IE when I have the money).

I''m gonna get a full moon with a faded Ohm inside it and in the middle will be a head shot of OC.

Ohm
