How in the world is her 17 y/o daughter being pregnant a reflection on her?
LOL. Of course it is a reflection on her. What kind of responsible parents lets their 17 year old that is not even a ADULT in the eyes of a the law get pregnant? a parent that doesn't give a crap, that is what.

In this day and age to automatically look down on the parents for things the children get into, well that is just thinking from the dark ages IMO Labra.

Hmmmm . . . I don't know that I've ever met a parent who "let" their 17 year old daughter get pregnant.

Right, so you have NO responsibilty for what your child does then? you'd have to be pretty dumb to get pregnant at 17 anyway, but you can't say that a parent has no influence over a child at that age.
No one said anything about not having any responsibility, but unless you have a very foolproof chastity belt with an alarm system on your teen and never let them out of your sight, guess what? Things happen out in the real world.

Being dumb in certain circumstances is part and parcel of being 17. No one gets through their teen years without a healthy case of the dumbs. Some of us just know we had the dumbs, and some of us not only suffered from the dumbs, but from the denials, too, and the denials never seem to go into remission.

Parents do have a great deal of influence over 17 year olds; mainly, they influence 17 year olds by example - the 17 year olds tend to want to do exactly the opposite of the example their parents set. It's what they do, and the tighter you hold them, the farther they run when they escape your clutches.

You know...I am pretty sure my parents didnt 'let' me have sex....I am pretty sure that I just went ahead and did it.

I was 17, in college, and my parents had no say in the matter. My boyfriend lost his virginity alot younger than me, his parents didnt come to the realization that he had had sex until he told them a couple of months ago that we were going to be living together.

My parents talked to me, spoke to me about not having sex, but in the end it was my choice...just like using protection was my choice...I frankly dont have time for a baby.

Labra -- how old are you? Are you really that familiar with this generation? How do you keep your kids from having sex or getting pregnant? Past feeding them their pills, putting on their condoms, or standing over them 24/7 so they dont have the chance, its pretty much impossible.

I am sorry if this is an offensive post...but seriously, this kind of thing is pretty hallmarlk these days -- by this kind of thing I mean kids doing things despite (and sometimes in spite of) their parents.

For example : Cho -- the kid who killed 32 kids at my University (Virginia Tech), came from a wonderful, stable family...What the hec could they have done. The difference here is that what he did affected 100s of people...this pregnancy only affects that girl and her family...What matters is how the family handles it, not that it happened.

The rumor of the DS baby being the daughter's is what forced the McCain camp to make the statement that the 17 year old daughter was pregnant, proof being how could she have given birth in May if she is now 4 months pregnant. So, yeah, this is not a rumor.

As others have stated, parents from THIS generation don't "let" their teens get pregnant any more than parents of PAST generations did the same thing..........NO ONE LETS THEM DO IT

So I take it when you have a teen, boy or girl.......because "IT" affects and happens to both, (it just happens that the girl is the one ridiculed and embarrassed for it) they will not be allowed out of your sight........or you really believe that you can "talk" to them and they will take your word as gold and NEVER do anything you don't want them to? ROFLMAO!!

I talk openly with my kids, as of right now I have 3 teens-15, 16, and turning 19 tomorrow. No, none of them have turned up on drugs, gotten pregnant, or have been treated for any STDs........it could be luck or they really could be abstaining. I don't know because short of taking the girls into the doctor and having them "checked" how would I? They aren't prisoners, they go places with friends, parties, movies, all sorts of things..........it can happen to ANYONE.

I guarantee you if you DO keep them prisoners you will get a lot more than you bargain for someday ;)

Late bloomer, eh? ;):rofl1:
I was on the no-sex until marriage track until I got tired of it...:D

It was either that or the fact that I was severley overweight and living in a shallow area until I was 17...I then proceeded to drop weight and go to college...two amazingly life altering differences.

Well I just heard that she IS pregnant . Such a shame for all , but I sure don't blame the parents !!! Guess it's almost the norm today .....normal family and I'm sure her mother said the norm ' Oh sh!t ! '.. I wonder if she told her mother before she was nominated . I'm sure we'll hear a lot about teen pregnancy if elected .

I wouldn't say it's the "norm" anymore than it used to be, there's just less of a stigma so people aren't as desperate to hide that fact anymore.

They are saying that McCain knew before he nominated Palin, so I'm assuming she told her mom before she told McCain;).

Considering the number of people having children as teenagers (heck, judging by the "get to know you" thread, there are a lot of parents here who had children that early), I'm not sure anyone should be shocked when it happens. I think the way it is handled is what really reflects upon the people around the parents, and so far, it appears that everyone is handling it just fine.

I don't think the fact that Palin's daughter is having a child as a teen makes her a bad choice for VP, any more than the fact that I don't have a kid makes my mother a good choice for VP.

Well I just see too many teenage pregnancies today and they are accepted . Many here have been supported . I personally don't like the " Congratulations " ....rather " Good luck and do your best " . We've got many great single Mom's here . I'm just glad that neither I , nor my kids had to go through it .

I know this...as a parent...

I sure would pass up a great opp. to spare my child having their personal life spattered across the web and news media.

Sometimes there are things like family...are more important than your promotion or your next big trophy. Just MO.

So... Teenage pregnancy is how you are going to decide who to vote for?

PUH-LEASE.

I was in an abusive relationship and lost a baby 5 months along at the age of 20.

Am I a bad person? Am I an unfit mother because of it? Even though I now have a beautiful 11 month old girl that I love more than anything and I will do ANYTHING I can for her to have a good life?

We all like to think we can keep our kids under our thumb and know exactly what they are doing 24/7

But you know what? thats a LIE. I am a good person. and I bet taht NO ONE on this board is a perfectly innocent being. Not even you Labra.. with all your holier than thou attitude. Do you have kids? If you do I bet they are either VERY young or you are TOTALLY out of touch with who they really are.

Kids make mistakes... that's life. I sure made my own mistakes. yet... my mom and dad love me SO much. My mom is my VERY BEST Friend now. I talk to her every single day even though I live 9 hours away.

It's a mother that turns away her child during his/her mistakes that really lets me know what kind of person they are. during my biggest screw ups my mom NEVER EVER EVER turned her back on me. No matter how I hurt her she was ALWAYS there.

To judge a mother on the mistakes their children make is like judging a surgeon on how the patient lives their life after a heart transplant.

Seriously... if this is the type of stuff that decides whether one does or does not vote for a candidate really makes me worry. Are people that easily influenced by the media... are people THAT easily influenced that THIS is what would make or break a vote? Almost makes me scared that people can vote. Pathetic. Yet... this is what a free country is. Be glad that her daughter won't be put to death for being pregnant at this age... or for birthing a girl if that's what she has. and be grateful that such a frivolous occurance can be your deciding factor in your FREE vote.

PATHETIC. Right up there with voting for a candidate because they are male/female or black/white/ asian etc etc.

Listen to their OBJECTIVES. Listen to their PLANS. would you crucify your parents because of the mistakes you made? If you do.... well honestly it makes me sick that YOU make your parents suffer for the mistakes YOU made.

If that were the case... NO ONE would run for president, VP, senator, governor etc etc etc.

No one would be in movies, on TV, news anchors etc etc.

EVERYONE who is on ANY kind of TV has their family dragged into it. Perhaps we should question the people that pull up this kind of crap rather than those who are the victims of it. Sometimes even if it isn't true... it gets into the news. so that would mean NO ONE was eligible. Not you nor I.

I just hope people don't vote for her because she is the perfect mother...
NO ONE is the perfect MOTHER, FATHER, BROTHER, SISTER, AUNT, UNCLE, COUSIN, GODFATHER, GOD MOTHER, DAUGHTER, SON... etc etc etc etc etc etc.

I honestly hope no one votes for a candidate based on their relationship with their family or the mistakes their family has made.

NO ONE"S family is perfect. not one persons. It's insane to think anyone IS a perfect parent, perfect child... etc etc. It's unhuman if you ask me.

Quite a pathetic voting strategy if you ask me.
