"Or Best Offer Cash"

I really can't even believe you're looking into this dog, Maya. I really thought you knew better? :(

I'm really surprised at some of the responses here. Maybe I'm totally out of line - but do you people realize how condescending you sound??

I simple "no" and then a couple of reasons should suffice. Are we seriously scolding Maya for her honest question "I thought you knew better than that"? At least she asked!

No kidding. If the goal is to get people to stop asking about breeders this is a fantastic way to go about it.

If they were rehoming for a small fee, such as on craigslist, it'd be a different story. I would not pay for this dog, considering someone has mentioned there is no health testing done on the parents. If you want a dog with poor breeding, you can get that through small rehoming fees on craigslist, rescue or shelter. If you want a healthy dog and don't mind spending quite a bunch... find a reputable breeder please. :)

How did you get 'scolding' from my post? I REALLY did think Maya knew better than to even look into a dog like this. It would just be supporting a BYB most likely from the looks of the add. :( And Puppfind.com is known as a big puppy mill website.

I'm sorry my post came off as 'scolding'. I was just shocked/sad that Maya would be looking into a dog like this since she's been on Chaz for a while and gotten great Dobie advice from Sizzle in the past.

Fran, Panzer isn't any good either.

Maya, you can do much better. He's charging that much because he thinks that a fancy sounding German name says "high quality."

If you want a new dobe, rescue may be your best bet. You may not be able to get a good quality dog for $1250.

JMHO.

Here is my take-

I would ask why he wants so much for the dog. I know nothing about dobermans or what one should look for regarding bloodlines or performance or what not, but I would think that for an adult dog to go for that much, it would have to have some type of performance title and come from truly impressive bloodlines.

Also, why does that dude want to get rid of Abby? Just for the money or does she not fit into a breeding program or what's the story morning glory?

Just do your homework. Don't settle for the first pretty face that you see, because that's often deceiving and will end in your regrets.

If the other posters say that dobermans are same-sex aggressive, I'd also not go with a female. I'm sure that if you got into contact with your local doberman breed club that they would steer you in the right direction.

If you're a newbie to a breed, then the breed club is the best way to start. You may even want to go to a few shows and meet some dogs/kennels. IMHO- that's the best way to start on the endevor. That way, you can see the animals up close and in a variety of settings.

In the last sam show I went to, I saw a lady in the ring with some very pretty dogs. I was impressed with them, and I had never heard anything negative about them. However, after meeting her, I decided not to get a dog from her, because I knew she'd be a terrible mentor.

She was not interested in speaking with me, and was quite condescending. If you go online, you'd never know anything like that, and I think that's a pretty big deal.

For that much money, you should go for the whole package- a good kennel, mentor, bloodlines, titles, etc.

Panzer (familydobes) aren't much to write home about either. :(

From what I understand, there are few and far between doberman breeders that are worthy of drooling over. If you want to add another dog to your home, I'd make sure that Maya is ready for it and that you go the responsible breeder route or responsible rescue route so that they can provide step-by-step assistance in adding to your family.
amen. i'd stay FAR FAR away from familydobes... even further away than i would this dog. if you think its ridiculous to spend 1250 on this dog (which i do think so), then the prices at familydobes are going to be even more ridiculous.

id say a big fat no all around.

Hell, she has said the same exact thing we are saying to her, to other people, so how is that condescending... please

I don't meant to sound witchy Jess, but, when have I ever given that tone to someone asking what I thought of a dog?
actually, when have I ever given advice to someone asking opinions on a dog? I don't do that because I don't feel like I know enough about any breed to judge it.... That's why I asked you guys what you thought... I was doing my "homework"... I trust the opinions of Chaz and know that there are several people here who know what they're talking about. Plus, I thought I could get some good friendly advice... Obviously that wasn't the case.
Its not like I had a foot out the door ready to run off with a check for this guy... I wanted opinions and help first.

There's been friendly and good advice in tthis thread that I hope you can sort through and find. :) I'm sorry if you felt attacked or belittled for considering this dog. You are doing your research and asking for opinions, and that is never a bad thing.

Are you looking specifically for a well bred dog?

Puppies are the worst! I understand totally why you don't want a puppy. But, on the other hand...Dobermans have the cutest puppies EVER!

And...ok, I know that your house will probably be chewed to pieces...BUT AREN'T THEY CUTE!

I know. No pressure. Just because I'm jonesing for puppy pictures is not reason to pressure you to get a puppy. That would be wrong. ;)

Getting an adult from a good breeder shouldn't be hard. Like I said ,check out your local doberman club. I guarantee they'll help you out.

So? That's not an excuse for the tone of some of the responses. I would rather someone ask than run off and buy a dog from a questionable source, and rudeness when someone asks about a breeder is not the way to encourage people to do that.
