So, i was contacted by a friend about a Dobe for sale about an hour away from me...
so I emailed her owner and asked a few questions... I'll post my email that I sent along with the owner's reply...
Oh, and he has her listed on Puppyfind...
her name is Abby

anyways... here's the email I sent...

I saw your add on Puppyfind.com about Abby...
I am interested in her, but would love to know a bit more about her before making any decisions.
Is she good with small children and other dogs?
Can you please tell me who her Dam and Sir are?
Also, you said that she had a good start on obedience, could you please tell me a bit more about that? What style of training have you done with her? What commands does she know? Is she crate trained or does she stay loose in the house at night/when you are away?

Thank you very much :)
Jennifer

and here is the response I got this morning

Hi, Sire is Yorrick Vom Der Agustvona a German import, Dam is Dreamscape's IsIs Shje see children at the park when we are working obedience and I allow her to be petted by them daily, and I think it depends on how you introduce her to small dogs since she is big in size she is still puppy inside. She just loves to play. She does good for her age on leash with stand stay, sit, down, etc, about all of the basics. She has slept in a Pet porter Kennel since she was a small puppy also in a 4'x4' kennel if we are gone abit during the day in our garage. No I am a firm believer if not home she is in her Kennel, a pup at any age can get in trouble no mattrer how well behaved they are when you home or sleeping, no such thing as a perfect dog.I crate that way all of her time outside of it is all good, you can not correct her if the trouble is all ready done after the fact.Maybe when she is a adult but not when she is a pup yet.
what do you guys think? He is asking $1250 for her

No way.

Puppyfind.com is just a huge online puppy mill/BYB website last time I looked.

If your serious about buying from a breeder, why did you not ask more about health testing on the parents?

i dunno, price seems rather high, repsonce seems a little rushed...
id do some looking into the parents (neither are mentioned as Champs)
if all her "good start" in obedience is sit stay and some leash manners ect...

id be VERY warey about a dog on puppyfind...while i wont automatically rule a breeder that lists on puppyfind out...i am particualrly warey about those advertising on there...

id want to know what health clearences her parents have, testing ect...

I think I'm a little shocked the question was even asked.

...

Ok, I've regrouped.

If you're willing to spend $1250, I think seeking out a responsible breeder who has the time to answer your questions would be the way to go. I certainly don't have warm fuzzies from this exchange.

If his spelling is correct, the dam isn't listed on the OFA site as having hips, etc certified. That's the bare minimum of what I'd want to see when getting a pup, but that's just me.

As others have said already, if you'll spend that much, at least go to a breeder who will be much more open about their dogs' health and have a much better line of communication.

For $1250 you can get yourself a sound, beautiful, dog from a great breeder
Find some breeders that you like, email, many not only puppies but great adult dogs available! dont forget about health testing! good luck on finding a great dog!

Puppyfind is pretty much a mill online.. I would stay far far away from ANY breeder advertising there

I would never buy a dog on line at that price !!! Please folks , go through breed clubs in your area !!! It may be different in your area , and I am only aware of Golden breeders and none that I know personally advertise on line .

After having been burned by a breeder the first time around.. I'm shocked that you are even looking at something listed on puppyfind.

Being in the same area as Aryn and Leah.. if you are serious about adding another dobe in that price range maybe they can point you not only at their breeder but others they know from local shows and events that they think are worth looking into.

aren't dobes also known for same sex aggression? In this breed, I would certainly want to start with a younger dog, from a breeder who is available to guide you as needed.

Yup. Although males more than females. Still I would be very wary about adding an adolesent female dobe to your home. Same sex agression doesnt come out alot of times untill they are 2 or even 3.

Why dont you go for a rescue or a breeder?

Why are they getting rid of this dog? Is it a private person or a breeder? Find that out. It may be a private person who is looking to rehome a dog and just doesnt know were to go to do that.

I think you should keep looking elsewhere. For that much (Or not much more) I think you could find a REALLY well bred doberman.

Panzer (familydobes) aren't much to write home about either. :(

From what I understand, there are few and far between doberman breeders that are worthy of drooling over. If you want to add another dog to your home, I'd make sure that Maya is ready for it and that you go the responsible breeder route or responsible rescue route so that they can provide step-by-step assistance in adding to your family.

the entire wording of the add skeeves me out, combined with the wording of the reply...
neither of the parents are titled...any dog can have "champions in pedigree" and all he can say about being well started in ob is that shes leash trained and knows the basics...

and to top it off, i dont know much about ear cropping but the ear crop on that dog does NOT look right (particularly with her head shape)

if i were paying 1250 for a dog id want a show quality dog from champion parents, id want the parents FULLY health cleared, and ideally want additional titles on them...

i dunno, just somehting about the whole thing doesnt seem right to me...

That dog is not worth that money.

That crop makes me cringe. It is godawful

If you are willing to shell out that cash, buy a nice solid pup you can start from the beginning with or get from a multidog household.
