I'm really surprised at some of the responses here. Maybe I'm totally out of line - but do you people realize how condescending you sound??

I simple "no" and then a couple of reasons should suffice. Are we seriously scolding Maya for her honest question "I thought you knew better than that"? At least she asked!
I agree 110% alot of these responses are extremely condescending and rude.

Its her life, her money, her choice. I realized she asked for a yes or no but she didn't ask for some of you to continue to come back to this thread and leave rude comments.

No wonder members get chased off so often. Its really tiring

That sounds like an aweful large amount of money for a substandard dog.
Also, go for a male. I would rather not run the risk of putting two female Dobes together.

I agree with the others, that person is not someone I would get a dog from.
Here are some breeders I've found, many don't have adults (or have not posted them on their website), but I don't know when you want a dog so maybe by the time you are ready they'll have an adult. None of these breeders are in Iowa, I can't find any good ones there, these are in nearby states. I found a bunch before and accidentally made my post go away right before I entered it so hopefully I found all the breeders again and didn't miss any.

OZARK AUTUMN DOBERMANS
- Not sure how to feel about them, their goal is to have dobies with great temperaments and unlike BYBs they don't just say "we only breed friendly dogs!" and hope you take their word on it. Their dogs have TDI titles, temperament titles and obedience titles to prove that they have good temperaments. I would like other people's opinions.

Yes, I did get some good advice and I want to thank those who answered my question politly.

I do want a well bred dog but also do NOT want a puppy with no training.
The best thing imo to do would be to start contacting dobe breeders and explain you want an adult. When I was looking for an adult papillon, I was pointed to several suitable adults. Many breeders didn't have anything available but they knew through the grapevine who did.

Well bred and trained? You're a picky one! ;) :p

Much like me a few years ago. I got the well bred part, but Marq came to me hardly knowing his name. It might be a long search depending on how many show breeders actually actively train their dogs in anything other than standing pretty and trotting around a ring. I know I didn't find that in Marq's breed... :s But EPs aren't known for their intelligence either.

Definitely find reputable breeders and get the word out that you are looking for an adult dog. That'd be the best and truly only good way to go for both quality(health) and possibly trained as well. Goodluck!

If you are not planning on showing keep an eye on craigslist. There have been three dobes I have seen on mine lately I would get in a heartbeat that the owners were giving up because they couldn't be bothered to find a place that allowed dobes.

Get the word out to local breeders you are looking because they are probably getting dogs returned that are trained and older.

Yes this too. I have seen some BEAUTIFUL Dobes on craigslist from owners who weren't prepared for a Dobe. Really the main Craigslist breeds in my area are Labs, Boxers, Dobes, and Mastiffs (different breeds).

So you could possibly find a well bred one on there.

I agree craigslist is a good place to look for adult dogs,...

but if they are rehoming their purebred dog, it likely didn't come from a reputable breeder, and OP specifically stated she wanted a well bred, healthy dog.

Summer came trained well. She was used as a therapy dog and put on 'shows' for the people in the nursing homes and hospitals so she had an arsenal of tricks already learned.

However, she was almost 4 when I got her and she is far from problem free. She has SA, is hyperactive many times, and is DR. But the good news is you should have an idea of what baggage comes along with the dog. I didn't know she had SA until I got her as she was never alone in her old home though. It's a good thing I didn't know or I'd probably not have bought her. :/ But the most well rounded dogs we've had have been ones we've raised from puppyhood.
