as many as i love, i rebuke and chasten. therefore be zealous and repent.
Rebuking and chastening does not equal "beating the crap out of." Here's a quote for you . . . "He who lives by the sword dies by the sword."
mathew 7:6
do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.
Do you even understand what this passage means? It means "Don't preach the gospel to the gentiles (the dogs and pigs) because they will scorn and misunderstand the holy word of God (the pearls)." It has nothing to do with real dogs or pigs!
It's also considered by Biblical scholars to have been added by someone else, ie, not actually said by Jesus, because in a bunch of the other parts of the New Testaments he's all about preaching to the Gentiles. The Roman centurian (a gentile) is one of the first ones to recognize Jesus as the son of God ("Surely this was the son of God"), etc.
In Biblical times they had a low view of dogs (they were one of the "unclean" animals), so if you are really following the Bible literally, you shouldn't have a dog.
But then again, if you're taking the Bible literally, bats are a kind of bird.
