Brutie and I made a trip to petsmart today for a new collar. That wasn't an easy task by the way, they only had one to fit him, and he will be outgrowing it soon. Anyway, the store was swamped with people and dogs. Brutus was lunged at, snarled at, and bit at by other dogs. I might add he behaved beautifully. Only one time did I see him start raising his tail and it started swinging. We were standing in line to check out and this stupid person had the most unruly dog, it kept lunging and snarling at Brutus over and over. I made him sit by me and wait, until we moved.
People there don't even bother to ask you if they can pet your dog. We were swamped by an aisle full of people. Becuase he is different everyone assumes he can be hugged, petted and whatever, mainly kids, this cute little girl broke and run over to him and started getting in his face. I was very nervous, I told him to be easy, he licked the little girl and sat down. Whew, I am so glad he loves kids because she wasnt the only one that did it. Each time a child would run up to him he would sit down. At one time we had ten people around him, bless his heart he took it in stride but I could tell he was starting to get stressed. People were swamping him. He started shedding profusley, and I had the end of his leash so tight I now have 4 bruised fingers. A man was standing there while this was going on and was watching. After the crowd disapated he came over and commented on what a well behaved Fila I had. As it turned out he is a trainer for mans best friend and he teaches protection training for dogs. He was very impressed how well Brutus handled the crowd and the children. I was tooooooooo. As well behaved as Roxie is, I know she would not have made it through those moments without getting grumpy. That was a lot of stress for him to handle. The man asked if he could give Brutus a cookie. I said he could try...well he tried, and Brutus spit it out. He was so impressed, he said he spends months with dogs trying to train them not to take food of any kind from strangers or with a strange scent on it. Oh, he said he did work at petsmart as a trainer two days out of the week and hoped I would bring Brutus in often so he could see him. He also said he had two Filas that were taking his protection training classes and he said they were awesome dogs. I love my Fila puppy.:D :D :D He got lots of cookies and hugs when we got out of the he**zone.
I'm not sure if I should put him thru that much stress again. Should I continue taking him there or not?

Yay congrats to Brutus!!! Whether or not you take him back again is really up to you. I mean if you think this is a once in a life time thing and that next time could end in horror then clearly no, only take him on slow days. But if you think this is something that Brutus could get used to and start taking in stride without getting stressed then yes! Keep taking him! I love taking OC to busy places because it really strengthens his stable temperment and helps out at races. Regardless of how dense the crowds are or how many people mill around him, he takes it all in stride and can still focus on his job because he's used to that. Once a year we represent the Siberian Husky Club of Canada at the Kortright Centre and I take both OC and Ronan and the entire day they get swamped by a whole bunch of people petting them, kids poking their ears, babies screaming, etc and their fine. If they do start getting fed up with everything then instead of acting out they'll just calmly crawl under the tables and take a nap which is fine. This is probably obvious but just always watch Butrus' body langugae. If he's really getting stresed get him out of there before things turn bad so that the experiences are always positive in the end.

Goooooooood puppy, Brutus!

If he wasn't really upset or getting defensive, I don't see why it would hurt to take him back. He obviously is a gentleman in public, you should be so proud :) But as far as taking him back goes, you know him best and that just depends on how you felt with him in there. If you were really stresed, he very likely could have picked up on that.
I think that a bit of stress is something that most dogs should learn to handle, as long as they are not feeling trapped or getting upset. (It can go from exciting, anxious stress to scary and overwhelming stress in a matter of minutes, and the difference between the two is whether or not the dog is still able to enjoy himself.) I don't want my dog to feel trapped in public places. Petsmart is a bit stressful for my pup as well, but it is excellent socialization and I do all I can to make it a positive experience. If he gets too overwhelmed, he will retreat to my side and I try to immediately remove him from the situation. Again, keeping it as positive as possible so he doesn't dread public places. Now, he's more or less bombproof although I still do worry about taking him in close quarters with other people, if only because of his exuberance.. He is powerful, despite his small size.

You could also get a custom vest for Brutus (which is what I am going to do for my Fila while I am socializing her) that just says "IN TRAINING, please ask before petting". Most people assume that the dog is a service dog and tend to always ask before they touch the dog.. Children usually won't, but most kids listen SO much better to directions on how to act around a dog than adults do... I don't mind the kids that much.

I too am proud of Brutus, what a quality dog!!
If you went to that Petsmart over by Baybrook it is a zoo. People bring the worst behaved dogs with them what on earth are they thinking?
Honestly, I have never taken a dog there because not only are some of the other dogs there not trained to be in public, but I have seen kids go up and pull on dog ears and tails and I just do not want stress myself out because I know when all is said and done the behavior of myt dog is my responsibility if I choose to take it into a public place.

Brutie has always loved the limelight, he is Mr. Pet smart Socialite and Mr. Socialite at the vet also. What concerns me, he is showing signs of his ojeriza kicking in. I know today was difficult for him. He started out being his usual I'm in the limelight, dog, and managed to stay there, but I know it was difficult being swamped by so many people at a time. It had to put stress on his Fila nature. As calm as I am, it put me in a difficult situation. I had to keep reading him while trying to be polite. He did extremely well for a protective breed. At the check out, he still did well, but I could tell by his tail he was starting to get that mischievous side coming out. Ya know, I really couldn't blame him. He did mind well at that moment, but he had been thru so much human and dog abuse he was getting tired. Truthfully, I wanted to floor that man and his dog. All I could think of, you idiot, I have a 147 lb, 9 mo old Fila Mastiff that could rip your dog into tiny little morsels and he is behaving. You have an Australian cattle dog that only comes past my dogs knees and you can't make him behave. I wanted to floor both him and his dog.
If Brutus had misbehaved and ate the dog, it would have been mine and Bruties fault. I know socialization is very important, but please, couldn't they teach the dog something before bringing it into Pet Smart?

Lucille, I was thinking about you today. Yes it was the one on Bay Area Blvd. I have never seen it this busy. Sundays are definately out.

Hip hip hooray Brutas you da man!!! You da man Brutus. I take Izzy with me into petsmart but I dont take Nalla to often. She is gently but unpredictable and I dont want to run the risk of someone or another dog hurting her or visa versa. Where as Izzy well Ren you know the sibs she loves the attention and will sit for hours and hours though I do need to still watch her she still likes to jump on others and we are working on that, but other that that she will love you to death..

Good job Brutus!!

I try to avoid Petsmart during the busy times and usually go in the mid morning during the week. It's about as calm and empty as it's going to get. Aubrey just won't stop barking her fool head off and of course, the way she looks, people glare. Sawyer does better, but if there's a crowd he gets so excited he starts pulling and the handle on his leash came apart so it's basically a 6 foot line that's hard to hold on to if I'm holding something else as well.

Brutus seemed to handle it quite well!! What a good boy :D I would continue to take him as long as he does okay, make sure he doesn't become aggressive or show stress when entering the car or a store. Great job:D

Oh, this is rather funny, I overheard one lady telling her husband and kids that Brutus must be part newf, gd and boxer. I had to turn around and ask her if she was talking about Brutus. She said yes he was a beautiful mix. I couldn't help myself. I had to tell her... sorry, but he is a purebred Fila Brasileiro, aka Brazilian Fila Mastiff. I have had a few people ask if he was a gd with his ears uncropped, or a Bull Mastiff, but a newf, and Boxer mix? I had to picture this mix in my mind, and what I came up with, looked nothing like my Fila. This woman had to be on some heavy duty drugs. I swear I am going to put a sign on him that says, I'm a purebred Fila,Yes, I'm rare, but you can ask my mommy about me! This is the second person that thought he was some kind of wierd mix. Now, I'm not trying to be snotty, I know he is rather rare and Maggie is a mix so I don't have a problem with mixes, but gosh, some people just amaze me with their ignorance. Now, when I look at him, I see a fluffy brindle dog, with loose skin, big feet, bug eyes and a fluffy cropped tail. I have to laugh and shake my head with amazement.

Yep, and believe it or not, he isn't fat. Just a big boy. It must be the excess skin that weighs so much. lol

Awww, what a good boy!!

I brought my terrier mix, Colby, to the pet store a little while ago and a little boy asked if he could pet her. I said yes. So he's petting her when all of a sudden, his little brother RUNS up, and starts rubbing her neck really hard (with her head smushed between his arms). I was so proud - she just stood there.

Fila, Brutus' behavior is testament to his great intelligence and YOUR good work getting him the social contacts he needs! Excellent - both of you!

I wouldn't curtail his "expeditions." They're good practice. Just do what you did, keep an eye on that tail. When it starts to raise up and stiffen, even if it's wagging a bit, it's time to calm him down and reassure him. The other thing to look for is that sideways stare . . . If he's looking straight ahead but following someone out of the corner of his eye, time to get his attention on you.

When I've got the grrrls out like that, I really prefer to use a very short, stiff leather lead - the one I've got is about 18" long. I can feel the slightest movement that way and don't have to wrap the leash around my hand to shorten it either. It's really effective attached to a harness too.

Gosh, thanks Renee. I really was proud of him. maybe it is the newf, boxer gd mix coming out. :) Will he always shed when he is under these situations or will he outgrow that? Where did you get your short stiff leash? It would be much easier.

I can NEVER take Hannah to Petsmart or Petco! She, unfortunetely, is one of the unruly dogs you mention that pull at the end of the leash and jump up on everyone to get attention. Foxy I bring because he is so quiet and well-behaved but he gets really stressed and sometimes will have the occasional accident because he gets scared. I bring him anyways. There is a much quieter, less populated, pet store that I will take Hannah too when we take her to pick her toys. It's more expensive but I don't have to worry about Hannah getting us sued for hurting someone. I am glad to hear Brutus has done so well at the store with you, he's a really good boy.
