We live next door to an elderly couple. These people annoy me to no end. They constantly would give us "tips" on how to maintain our property (they have someone over doing something on their house/yard at least once or twice a week). They finally seem to have gotten the hint and have stopped suggesting things.

Because of this I dislike talking to them. However they've been bringing their off leash dog over to use our front yard as a bathroom. It's been going on for a while, but I've let it go to avoid the conflict. But I'm fed up. My husband found 5 piles of poop in our yard, and I just had to walk around a puddle on the walkway leading to my front door. I've been hoping to catch them in the act again and then confront them, but I seem to keep missing them now.

Would leaving a note on their door be inappropriate, or should I keep waiting to catch them in the act so they can't deny it?

I'd leave a note if it were me. Just tell them that you've SEEN them bringing their dog over to use your yard as a bathroom, and that you're sick of it.

Tell them that you found 5 poops in the front yard, and had to avoid a puddle RIGHT on your walkway!

That's ridiculous, I'd definitely leave a note.

I personally avoid confrontation, so catching them in the act would be really hard for me, because I'd WANT to run out and tell them what I thought, but I'd be too chicken. :p

So a note would be the way to go for me.

When this was happening to us I watched to be sure who the culprit was and immedaitely confronted them, making sure to bring a baggie with me so they could clean up.

It was not a friendly encounter, not because I was rude, I was just very firm about their responsibility to clean up after their animal, but it has not happened since ;)

I would catch them in the act, and then I would say go out there and say "I hope you are planning on picking that up?" and bring a poop bag for them! I would then say, "I have been finding alot of dog poop in my frontyard, and it's starting to kill my grass, Please don't let your dog use my frontyard for a potty area"..:)

wait it out , everybody has to die sometimes.

if you can't do that , then wait and spring with a bag for the poo and just walk up to them and say "Here ya go , for when you clean that crap up"

Nothing works better than catching someone, and then giving them the bag to pick the poop up with. I would try to do that if you think you'll be able to. That way they'll be nervous that you're watching.

I would pick up the poop, put it in a bag, and put it in front of their door along with a note, saying something like "you left something on our property, and I thought you might like it back".

That's what I've been thinking. And I'm so annoyed that I passed up on all those opportunities I've had (I've actually watched them do it from my upstairs window so I know it's them). I've just never seen the dog poop, but I figure it's got to be their dog.

I actually seriously thought about doing this when my husband told me he found all that poop :D

I had a neighbor who did that -- brought her Peke over into my backyard several times a day to do her business. She'd stand there and smirk at me while her dog crapped in my yard after I'd asked her to please let her dog crap in her own yard.

I got tired of it and the next time she was out there with her Peke I leashed Bear up (110 lb GSD/Akita) and took him over into her yard to return the favor. It only took a few times before that little bit of passive aggressive nastiness stopped. I think it was right after her husband got splattered when he hit a pile with the lawnmower ;)

Oh, this would be funny XD

One of my dogs always poops when she's out on a leash so it would be easy to do. I can guarantee they both poop much more than their little sheltie :rofl1:

That is gross and inconsiderate. Do you think they're acting out of resentment towards your rejection of their suggestions?

I would catch them in person while it's happening, hand them a bag and ask them to pick it up.

I'd go knock on their door and ask if they have any lawn care tips for keeping unwanted dogs from crapping on my lawn.

I have no doubt this is why they do it, since it wasn't always this way.

As an update, I just walked back from the mailbox and found a fairly fresh pile of poo. I grabbed a baggie and picked it up. I stood there with it for a minute thinking about throwing it on their lawn, but went inside and just called before I calmed down and changed my mind. I told her that I just picked up another pile of poo from my front yard, and I'd appreciate it if they would stop bringing their dog over to go to the bathroom in my yard. I barely have time to pick up after my own dogs let alone someone elses. She says sure (as if she's doing me a favor lol), and that they'll keep an eye out for that.

I think they actually thought I had no idea. I just hope they'll actually stop.

I was thinking something along these lines. Then I came to your post. :rofl1:

What obnoxious people!!!! I can't believe adults acting like that. Wow! I like the lawnmower splattering poo visual too. lol.

I hope this stops. Uggg. Neighbors! I don't have that where I live now, but when and if I move, I probably will. What about a fence? I won't live anywhere where there are neighbors without a good fence. Good luck.
