Uh oh...

But seriously, do a search for e-collars or go through the pages of the training forum and then you can make a decision. Multiple threads have been started on e-collars.

I think you said your dog was kinda nervous? I wouldn't go with any kind of shock collar.

Honestly, you started a post about training the recall and such, and got GREAT advice. Have you read through those?

I will never, ever recommend you use a shock collar for training some thing so small like a recall :(

The E collars of 10 years ago are like a horse and buggy compared to the modern E Collars. I know three pro instructors that use them, and the results they get are fantastic. The sensation the dog gets is like the sensation that you get when you put on one of those electronic exercise belts they used to sell on TV. It feels just like a tingle, and I demo mine with people all the time, and they are amazed at how gentle it is. Much less annoying to the dog than a flat, choke, or prong collar, by far. Takes about an hour to teach a dog to do a reliable recall. I can recall my dog, from 2 blocks away at the dog park, with all kinds of distractions going on.

The only thing I would rcommend, is making sure you get an instructor that is experienced in training people with an E Collar. Do not do it yourself..... Here is one site where you can research getting a good trainer to help you with E Collars http://www.apdt.com/

I think that's a bad idea. Read the links provided. A recall is something that should be able to be taught without things like that, as long as you put in the work. You'll find the majority of us are advocates for primarily postive method training.
Tools like e-collars must cause some level of discomfort or pain, otherwise they wouldn't make the dog stop for a second. My dogs come to me when off leash because they want to be with me and I make coming to me fun, not to avoid pain/discomfort.

It feels just like a tingle,
See I don't understand how that can be. If it was like that then why would it work any better than another method? It has to be something that hurts or causes discomfort or the dog could not care less. I say why cause a dog discomfort if you can get the same or better results with positive training and without the possible side effects of fear and pain training. Many people try positive training once or twice and if it does not work use pain as an easy way out for them, but not their dog. When I was training Max his recall he LOVED it,we had so much fun with treats and we ran around in the yard. he would get to the end of the run and before he hit the end I would call him and he would turn and bolt up to me and I'd throw the treat into his mouth and we would continue running around and having fun.

You said he will not associate the pain with you, maybe not. He WILL associate the pain with training and even though he may seem happy while he is getting it right, he is terrified of making a mistake knowing it will result in pain.

Awesome post.. It's not a tingle. I was using one till over a month ago to 'manage' off leash distraction, rather than fixing my issue and just teaching a real come. I zapped myself with it before ever using it, I stopped at 4/10, and haven't gone above that ever. Mainly had to use it on 3, as 2 got no reaction, 3 caused occasional screaming.. which is why I used the audio sound mainly.. I am so not proud of it, Thankfully I didn't ruin my dog, and I don't plan to ever take it out again, I put it away for good, and with Sam's advice we are on our way to an awesome recall.

You are in denial if you think your dog is stupid enough to not associate the pain with you. Maybe they will maybe they won't, but mine sure knew the collar and remote went together. It's a bandaid not a solution.

Yeah it works for some people, but it's not the first thing to try, and not the thing to try without someone knowledgable's help.

If you are set and *have* to have one, pick a top of the line one. Lower priced ones can be unreliable on timing, delivery and from experience, the buttons can get possibly stuck. Nice.

I'm still upset I turned to one. And even a few months ago really didn't see the issue with it. I didn't have people willing to help me fix our issues though till more recently. Thanks Sam.

Hedwig, please, please recondsider. This is coming from someone who HAS one.

Oakley was trained with an E Collar, and I would not recommend it for ANY dog unless there are very special circumstances...

Why is he even chasing animals in the first place? This is something that is so easily avoided by just putting a leash on him. Or if you are in a fenced in area, I don't really see an issue in him chasing them, unless he is actually catching them...
