In addition to city tags, our dogs have tags engraved with our address and
our cell phone number. Its not uncommon for people to call us and say, "we found your dogs and put them back in your yard," or "come and get your dogs and we won't call the pound." This simple trick has saved us many trips to the pound -- and a lot of cash -- over the years.

I don't put my address for a variety of reasons (besides which, she's never left out), but I do have my cell number, and, on the reverse, "owner will cover emergency vet care". I've had that recommended by friends who work in vet offices. Dogs who come in injured with no owner reachable may be given "basics" to try and keep them alive; with that information, I've been told that the vet will be more likely to do lifesaving procedures.

My dog's tag has his name, our home phone number, and
"Please Take to Vet
Needs Daily Meds"
which will hopefully discourage anyone wishing to keep him. He's perfectly healthy of course, but it increases the chance that someone will take him in and a vet will scan him for a microchip.

I won't put microchipped on because I have heard of people cutting the chip out. Lilly's says her name and needs daily med and reward
The other two have their name and reward written on it.

I should put "horrible indoor p*sser" on Trav's, that should stop someone keeping him. LOL!

LOL puppydog!

I would never put microchipped on a collar. If someone stole my dog and saw that then they know to keep it away from vets so it can't be scanned. I plan to put the owner will cover emerg vet care. My dogs don't wear tags atm.

I would question why your dogs are loose that often honestly. Seeing how many 'dog lovers' have posted to forums I am on tp say that in their opinion if your dog is loose you do not care as much as they do.. and will re-home it avoiding the owners frightens me.

My dogs have a tag with their name, my number and the back says if I am alone I am lost. That said I have a coated breed. If they go missing they'll look like train wrecks unkempt and uncared for pretty quick..

Due to the attitude from over zealous pet people though I fear if mine get out I'll not get them back.

I'd work on my fencing more than what the tags say.

Our older dogs are 12 years old. We live in a cul-de-sac and all the neighbourhood kids play street hockey in front of our house. They help themselves to nets stored just inside our gate. Get the picture? Over 12 years we've had to go get the dogs a handful of times.

Our possible pit bull rescue is never left out in the yard and since we've got him, we've put locks on our gates. Corky has shown no human aggression, but we doubt the neighbourhood would be as willing to help him as they do our Kees and our Eskimo X Poodle.

Thanks for suggesting I'm a poor pet owner. I'm not.

Bailey isn't particularly likely to get loose -- he's not out unsupervised and he's not a runner anyway -- but I still worry about it.

Was thinking about adding my e-mail address in case people don't want to call. I do have my home address because, honestly, I'll just be happy to get him back.

I like the vet care thing!

I don't think she was. But I am on some of the same forums she is on. And its common for people to decide (not us) that a person who's dog is loose is a bad dog owner and will rehome the dog before giving it back.

I was at an obedience trial where some competitors found a loose golden in the parking lot. It didn't belong to anyone at the trial so they took it with them... they lived 3 hours away from the trial grounds. 1/2 hour after they left the grounds the owners came by frantically looking for their dog. We were shocked that they would take the dog with them, they had assumed the dog wasn't 'loved' as it was free and were goign to give it to their local golden rescue!!

So I think MP was more concerned about your dogs, vs saying you are a bad dog owner.

Now on the other hand if you don't care about such risks....

I put Reward 4 Return and two phone #'s. I'm going to add the line about covering vet expenses--excellent idea.

Mine just says "Lucy" and my cell phone number. Our address has changed 3 times in the past 4 years, so I couldn't see putting that on a tag.

If someone outright stole your dog there is no way you are getting it back even if it was wearing a homing device. If someone wants a dog that bad then they will figure out a way around anything.

Not all vets check for microchips anyway, nor do shelters.

I put that on there in hopes that if my dogs *do* get loose and someone finds them, that the person knows that even if they take the collar off, the dog is still identifiable. It's also way more feasable than putting all of my info on the tag.

Maybe I just think there are still honest people in this world.

OTOH, I wouldn't put "needs medication" on a dog's tag where it isn't necessary. Maybe that's just me though. :)

I totally meant to get a tag to have his name and my number on it back when I first got Sam and it somehow slipped my mind... Thanks for the reminder! C=
