Roman's has his name and two numbers. It was $20 at PetCetera, they have an engraving machine and you just buy some tokens and in 5 minutes you have a nice shiney tag.

Once (before we knew he could open doors) he escaped and went to the nearby elementary school... after the kids had had enough of him, the secretaries were gonna call AC. Instead, the principal called my dad, who called my brother, who called his friend, who picked up Roman and held him till I could leave school and get him. It was a pretty sweet deal. :p

If you get a tag from one of those engraving machines, keep an eye on it to make sure the relevant information hasn't rubbed off.

I found a loose dog once, and he had his tags -- but all of the information had been worn off!! {Of like 3 different tags!}

We'll be getting new tags after our move. Current tags have:

Loose = Lost
Dog Name
cell number
city, state

I think I'm also going to add DH's cell and "Owner will pay emergency vet costs" or similar on the tags as well.

If someone outright stole your dog there is no way you are getting it back even if it was wearing a homing device. If someone wants a dog that bad then they will figure out a way around anything.
As someone who has had two dogs stolen, and gotten one back this is not true. I know of at least 3 dogs that got back to their owners when a vet decided to scan a dog and find it didn't belong to the client. If the new 'owners' had realized that the dog they were bringing in was chipped, they might not have brought it in.

I have talked to vets about this, and they have all conceded that yes its likely better (in case of theft) NOT to advertise that the dog is chipped, or put the name on the tag.

In some cases people have tried to dig the chip out. I would rather spare my dogs that fate! (same reason I would never tattoo an ear)

To each his own I suppose.

Knew someone who bought a dog under the agreement that it was to be s/n then have the papers signed over. New owner provided proof of s/n but the old owner would never surrender the papers or the microchip info. The dog's chip was scanned by two different vets, one of whom took it upon himself to call othe old owner. Neither vet had any issue allowing the dog to go home with the new owner. The guy who called and spoke w/ the old ownber even agreed to call the chip company and help the new owners get the info switched to their name.

I keep considering getting one for Kharma that says, "if you can read this, you might have a problem in 3 . . . 2 . . . "
I have a friend who has a husky mix who used to live to run in the woods. She considered getting one that said something along the lines of "If you get close enough to read this, you win a prize! Call to claim."

Both of my dogs have tags that state their name and 2 phone numbers.

They have "gotten out" once... and by that I mean, the gate was left open, I was watching them in the yard, realized they weren't there and ran outside and they were peeing on the neighbor's bushes.

In reality, I don't know if anyone could catch Gonzo. I don't know how he would act if he was being chased by strangers. I'm sure he would run & run & run. He could probably be caught by someone who happened to be walking their Husky, or something, though. I'm POSITIVE that he wouldn't be stolen; he's fairly old and more than fairly crazy.

Fozzie might be stolen... he is really cool, and he would race up to the first person he saw and do his happy dance. They might re-think keeping him when they realize how mischevious and sassy he is, and he eats them out of house and home.

People in my Dad's neighborhood used to allow their dogs to roam (and by allow I mean, didn't take precautions to prevent them from getting out after the FIRST time)... it's very upscale and private. But that does not mean pets cannot get stolen, hurt or killed. I used to put dogs back into their yards on a DAILY basis. A neighbor's Lab would literally scale our fence to swim in our pool, daily. It enraged Gonzo and it wasn't very cute after a while. People wouldn't thank me, they would just act like it was no biggy, some of them were even annoyed and told me their dogs would find their way home! They weren't there when I witnessed their dogs narrowly escape death in the street, and just couldn't believe it could happen to them. I don't think tags are at all a reliable way of getting your dogs back, and no one should assume their dog will make it safely home because they have tags.

ihartgonzo: But that doesn't mean that tags have never saved a dog either. It's an extra precaution and it does no harm to anybody to put on a tag.

Mine just have their name and my number.
Neither are microchipped but I'm planning on having it done, hopefully soon.

Our dogs all wear tags that have their name and our phone numbers. Newt doesn't have a tag yet, mainly because we were having trouble finding something both cute and wee.

I've never had a dog get out, but it is always good to be prepared. They're all microchipped as well

Argon has his name, my number, and microchipped. Considering that he is a runner, I think the chances of someone stealing him vs a good samaritan finding him are in my favor. Of course, he is not purebred or intact, which changes the stakes.
Grimm has my generic foster tag, which just has my number and "If I'm alone, I'm lost" on it.
Argon may get a new tag that says "needs medication".

If Milo got out...I doubt any stranger would be able to catch him. He does have a tag with my phone number and his name on it, and is micro chipped, but there's no way he'd let a stranger pick him up.

I should put "horrible indoor p*sser" on Trav's, that should stop someone keeping him. LOL!
