when you're not directly watching them?

My dogs are so weird. I let them out to run around the yard and play, but if I don't stay outside with them, they just come right back in the house. They seem to think they need me to watch and cheer them on or something, haha. I mean, I generally do supervise them, but sometimes I don't feel like sitting outside and watching them the whole time. I'm never far should anything happen, and I do check on them regularly, but I just find it odd that they won't do anything if I'm not watching them. They used to when they were younger and crazier, but not anymore. Do your dogs do this too?

Constantly. Bodhi will happily play with her ball on a rope for hours alone, running with it, tossing it up etc. She's a spoilt only child though lol

When they're inside they play CONSTANTLY. They never 'take their shoes off when the come inside' or 'use their inside voices'. But when I put them in the backyard, they just stand by the door. In the front yard, if I shut the door and leave them they'll go run off into the woods and play. But if I put one out at a time, each of them will just stand there.

Mine refuse to stay outside without me. While I'm there they play play play and when I leave they all go stand next to the door looking sad. I think they'd just rather be with me than do anything else.

Bounty plays with himself alot .... he will throw a toy around and chase it. Once in a while stopping to try and get the cats to play. But yes, if I am not in the mood to play, or am just busy, he will play on his own. :D

Sienna will play with one of the cats occasionally, but mostly her concept of play is to run circles around me. For which I'm kind of required to be present. :D

Riley likes an audience to admire his speed and agility while careening madly around. If I kick him out the door into the yard, he'll beat on the window to get me to come out and play with him.

Took this photo this past summer of Riley taunting my dad - it's a typical performance.

I don't leave mine outside alone so I dunno, but I imagine so! They play in other rooms in the house without me, LOL. I'll be in the office working and I'll look up and realize they have sneaked out into the living room and are playing bitey-face in there...

Initially, they won't. If I leave Duke and Boomer outside in the backyard (and I do a lot, not gonna lie) they will sit next to the door snuffing. However if I don't come back in 10 minutes, they'll go about their business peeing on things, sniffing and playing.

In the house yes Ivan will play by himself. Outside no, the outdoors is to do your business as fast as possible and get back in the house. Peewee just flat out never plays anymore. He is the old fuddy duddy bump on a log anymore.

Chulita will start playing with a toy, tossing it up in the air, spinning around and going in for the kill, shaking that prey. But then she'll stop short and look at me, as if to say, "Are you watching this?" If I watch and pay attention, she'll resume with her antics. If I ignore her, she usually won't keep it up for long. Jose` will play with something a little longer. But both of them play more if I join in with them.

In the house they will play together for hours. Duke is happy in a yard by himself but he wont play inside or out by himself. He is always shoving a toy in someones face (drives me nuts! lol, I'm glad he is only my doggie 'nephew') Radar and Desoto won't stay in a yard by themselves and I am too paranoid to leave them out alone anyways. However they have no issue with whipping one of their stuffies around, chewing a nylabone or starting a game with another dog without an audience.

I'm glad they're not the only ones. I would imagine for dogs who are allowed to play in the house a lot that they probably wouldn't want to play outside all alone. But mine are not allowed to rough house and run around the house like crazy in the house (and they don't even try), so I would think that they'd want to take advantage of their yard time with or without me. But apparently not! Even in the house actually they don't do anything unless I'm with them. They stop all toy tossing and bone chewing and then start again once I come back. I have no idea why... they're just odd, lol. Dance is better about occupying herself with or without me inside as she has more of an independent streak, but the Dobes seem to think I need to be around for every little thing. And if I'm not, well there isn't much point in doing anything but sleep. Or if they're outside, there is no point in doing anything but stand at the door or eat some leaves.

Chloe, no. She's never really without us. If we go inside, she comes to the door and wants in, too.

Violet, yes. She probably prefers for us to be inside so she can commence the naughty.

Suzie will chase the cat all by herself. But that is just chasing, because the cat will only run, she doesn't 'play' with Suzie.

And she will destuff stuffies by herself, but she won't toss it in the air or anything. If I go inside before she's ready to stop, she'll lie down with it and just stare at the people moving inside the house. Its kinda sad, and usually someone takes pity on her and goes and throws it again.

Nope, very rarely. At my dads house if we let all 3 dogs out in the fenced in yard, they just come right back in. Won't play without us out there, LOL. Now unless there is something to bark at on the other side of the fence... then they all go running for a bit and come right back in.

Blaze and Solo play like maniacs together alot. Inside or outside. But if we go to the dog park. Blaze will ignore Solos childish antics and tell him off. Like he is embarsessed to play with him lol.

Blaze will occasionally play with a toy alone, inside or out.

Solo will happily play by himself all day inside or out.

Solo cant be left to long alone outside. as he will start to dig. Blaze can lounge outside by himself and not do a thing but lay in the grass.

But then again our back yard is smaller then a postage stamp, so not much room for fun lol

Oh yeah they play all the time when no one is watching. Actually if I come out and watch them they will stop and look at me like "What do you want? leave us alone... we are busy" lol

Beezer won't stay out for long though for the most part. he'll go out and mess around but withinten minutes he is ready to come back inside. every once in a while though he'll stay out there for a long time basking in the sun and what not.

Belle... she would live out there all day every day as long as it's not raining. If it's warm and sunny she'll go out and patrol the yard, find a sunny piece of grass and lay down for a snooze and then back up to patrol the yard... give a few barks to see if anyone will answer lol. She just does her own thing until she's ready to come in and take up residence on the couch.
