I really like white leather collars for some reason. My main concern though is how well they stay white and if they will end up dulling and turn yellowish brown with continued wear.
Luce has been wearing her white Ella's Lead collar pretty much continuously since July and I am super pleased with how well it's held up and how bright white it still is.

I still haven't found the perfect collar for Steve. I don't know what I want for him. He has a yellow vegan collar from Ella's Lead that's a really nice collar... I just don't like it that much on him.

I love all three of my Ella's Lead collars. Two are leather, both are beautiful :) I love the pumpkin leather on Quinn but the cognac is so thick and supple and just good quality, it's wonderful. I can't believe how great it feels for only being cleaned/conditioned once and it hasn't even been worn enough to really be broken in (Quinn only wears it out and about).

I have two Paco leads. They are very nice quality, but I do prefer the Ella's Lead customer service. I love that Rebecca tells you all of your options, clarifies everything before making the collar, and is always so warm and friendly. Paco was good and pleasant to deal with but my leashes came with tiny snaps on them, one of which was very weak and I would have never put on Quinn. I ended up sending them back and having larger snaps put on. They were very good about returning them, but I feel like had it been Ella's Lead she would have specified the snap size/quality, especially since I had said I had a 40 pound dog and wanted something that could hold. I do like my leashes, even though it did suck to have to send them back the first time out of my pocket!

I've always had amazing customer service with Paco. Someone who works there always emails me back to confirm what I want.

When I ordered Tucker's Xdog Mini collar, I put that I wanted light blue rhinestones. Someone emailed me with a picture of all the colors and wanted to make sure that I actually did want the light blue ones. It was actually aqua that I wanted, and they made sure to use those instead.

I have 3 custom collars from Paco, and each one was exactly how I imagined them to be. My dogs wear their collars when they swim and they only look better with age.

The staff at Paco has recently done something VERY special for me that a few people on here know about... it really shows how awesome of a company they are :)

For me, customer service is a BIG deal. I've ordered from a good handful of collar companies, and Paco is definitely at the top of the list. And, when your pet passes away, they will make your collar into a memorial bracelet.

My worst experience has been with Ella's Lead... terrible products, and even worse customer service.

My next collar will be from Whiplash Leather (Linds posted up a collar from there a while back and I LOVE it) and she makes gorgeous stuff which is very different from most leather collar companies.

And I totally have to show this off. It's Chloe's Dia de los Muertos collar which was a limited edition laser etched collar by Paco Collars:

Question ,

What is the highest quality leather? How is it graded?
If you want the highest quality leather, I'd definitely go with latigo leather. Generally, the highest quality leathers are "normal" colors (black, tan, brown). Obviously all leathers are dyed, but colored leathers (blue, yellow, pink, etc) don't last or wear as well as normal colors.

I like knowing where the leather is sourced from, since some leather is sent to China and treated with harsh chemicals.

Paco gets their leather from a single farm in Mexico where it's processed on site. Makes me feel more comfortable knowing that each collar is from the same place.

I would love to try some of the Whiplash gear!
Me too! I'm really excited about making an order. I'm emailing with Kay and working on a design. I'll probably pull the trigger with an order next month (reached my collar/lead quota for this month haha). Her work is so unique and unlike any other collars/leads I've ever seen so I'm eager to make my order.

Whiplash gear is awesome. And her repair policy is pretty much, "Sh!t breaks, I fix it!"

Emily, that's the one that Linds posted that I love!

I'm wanting something similar, with dark brown leather as the base and red cow hide for the top (and celtic conchos).

I LOVE her stuff!

Emily that's the one I was just eyeballing on her Facebook. I seriously would love that collar leash combo but with royal purple instead of turquoise. Cricket looks AMAZING in royal purple.

I have 5 Ella's Lead collars. I love them all.

Smudge's two have been worn for 7 and 8 months straight (Cider wore one) which included months of daily swimming and neither are worse for wear.

We also have a sixth on the way.

Sadly this thread seems to be another war though that really isn't needed.

As for quality def stay away from chinese stuff! I like latigo or bridle leather. The leash that Ren (OC) made me is from top quality bridle leather and is every bit as nice as latigo. (if you ever need a nice leather leash... I highly recommend Ren's stuff)

English or german bridle leather is my personal fave. Maf has a black latigo leather collar from Ella's lead that is stunning. I would take either :) Through horse stuffs I have learnt my lesson about 'cheap' leather.. not cheap as in price, as one of the nicest quality collars I ever got was only $25 from a tack shop, but cheap as in quality.

I don't usually like leather, because it looks too masculine. I like girly for my little fluffball! I was thrilled to find this one on etsy:

I have three Paco's and love them. Two for Stella (1.5" wide) and an xdog for my Boston that is 1" tapered to 3/4". They wear them in water all the time. The leather has become so buttery soft and supple, too.

Good leather and quality work is not cheap, especially when you're talking custom work. That said, for the exceptional quality, great customer service, and lifetime guarantee, the prices are more than reasonable.

On a side note, they worked with my husband to surprise me with an awesome collar for Stella. They were more than happy to help him in his covert operation lol. Love that!

I'll be getting something from Kay (Whiplash) when I eventually make up my mind about what I want. She has put up with me SO much because of my indecisiveness.

But I trust her implicitly, I know she always stands by what she makes, it's high quality, unique, soo pretty and she like the nicest person ever.

All three of my dogs have a Paco collar each. Actually, Dance has two. I really like them, and most of all, I love their customer service. They are amazing to deal with. I waited for a sale to get my collars, as paying full price plus shipping to here is insane. But with a sale, it wasn't too bad at all. Still expensive, but the collars hold up really well and are very nice. They're much nicer than the plain leather collars we used to buy for our dogs back when we didn't do online purchasing. I don't like anything too fancied up, so I went with simpler designs (well, more simple than some of their designs). I'd get tired of a totally plain leather collar, but I didn't want too much design either. And they all got a deluxe simply because somehow they manage to look thinner on the dog, and I didn't want too much hardware rubbing on their necks either. Ripley got a Pickles Deluxe (brown/brass), Keira got a Kylee Deluxe (black/brass, tapered to 3/4" at the buckle) and Dance got a Swirl Deluxe (tan/brass, tapered to 3/4" at the buckle) and a custom 3/4" one also a couple years before. I put some thought into it, but not too much. I had extra money at the time, and wanted all three of them to have a pretty, quality collar. And so I decided to go with Paco. And I went with Paco because the collars looked less bulky to me than some other companies (I liked the hardware better), I'd already had one for Keira and Dance that I knew I liked, and like I said, I've never dealt with a nicer company. Ripley and Dance also have two collarmania collars from when they were still making leather collars. They're nice as well, but different, and the particular ones I got don't look like they'd hold up as well in water and such without looking too worn eventually. And my Paco collars are softer. A couple of conditionings, a week of wear, and they were comfortably soft.

As far as scratching, it's been my experience that all leather collars will scratch and there isn't much that can be done about it unfortunately. Conditioning helps, but there will always be some scratch marks.

I'd never heard of these Whiplash collars you're all mentioning before today I don't think, but they sound really nice!

ETA: Here are my guys' collars:

For coated dogs, I'd definitely recommend double leather. They still show up with Rory and Tucker's coat. Emma is too small for one, though, sadly!

ETA: The hardware is awesome. Even the "silver" is 100% brass. It's so nice and solid.
