The group who meets daily at the community hall with their dogs so they can play and socialize have all changed their attitude towards Chihuahuas, including me. None of us have had any experience with Chi's, but all had general dislike (ignorance) of what we believed to be yappy, nasty little dogs.

Enter Bruce, an amazing little dog that we all, including the men, think is such a wonderful special character. Nothing like what our perceived view of this breed was. His owner also has Duke, a nine month old English Mastiff, who is a big happy, goofy, playful pup. These two dogs have added a new dynamic to the group and we all look forward to their arrival each day. Bruce's personality is huge and he is fearless. He's not yappy at all and races to greet every dog with enthusiasm. All the dogs accept him as their equal and the humans always seem to go out of there way to make sure he gets a good head rub and kind words.

I'm happy that Bruce has educated all of us. The dogs always provide a good laugh and their happiness is contagious. The dog play/socialization time is my favorite time of day.

I know a similar Chi who is a regular at our dog park... he is AMAZING! His name is Amigo and he's the sweetest, most beautiful show quality blue tri. He is also very confident and good-natured. :) All of the dogs love and respect him. Not like the many shivering, cowering, snappy badly bred Chis that I see everywhere. I wish all of them could be so lucky to be responsibly bred and owned. That's the cost of crazy breed popularity. *le sigh*

I found a picture of him in the dog park biographies. Apparently, he's also a certified therapy dog!

That's nice to hear. It is hard to change pre-conceived ideas and misconceptions about certain breeds. And as you found out, the best way is to meet a few good ambassadors of the breed. I think Chihuahuas are a great breed and I'm picky......and bias. LOL.

I've taken my two with me into a Les Schwab tire center while I wait for them to do something with my car. They serve popcorn and coffee there in the waiting room. Les Schwab is a dog friendly business and I have been given permission to have my dogs in there while I wait. One time, I put my jacket on the chair next to me (to protect it from dog hair) and after a little scavenging on the floor for stray popcorn and a little visiting of people there, I put my two Chis on the chair next to me and they just dozed off. I got up and told them to stay, which they did. I got some coffee and a magazine and came back to my chair. People would come and go and they just dozed and didn't react to the activity, other than to open one eye to watch. One man said to me, "Those are those little ankel-biting, nasty, yappy, high strung Chihuahuas, aren't they." He was grinning and being sarcastic because they were actually quite sloth-like.....lol.... relaxed and quiet. Other people commented on what nice little dogs they were. It made me feel good to be able to get the message across, that they have a nice disposition and most probably aren't the stereotypical, poorly handled toy dogs.

Chihuahuas are awesome. They are seriously GREAT little dogs (and I'm not a little dog person in general).

I'm so glad that you met one that changed your opinion (along with everyone elses!). I know I'll always have at least 2 chihuahuas in my life at all times.

I have not met a Chihuahua yet that was nasty. Years ago we had a Chihuahua and she was the greatest dog. The yard was not fenced in and she would never leave the yard (no invisible fence even) she was trained by me what the boundary's were and never crossed them. When she had to go outside she would sit at the back door and would not go out even if you opened the door for her until you said "Ok you can go". Walking her on a leash she was right at your side no matter how fast or how slow you were walking. I probably could have walked her off leash but never did.

When Lola's time comes and I am ready for another dog I would consider another Japanese chin or a Chihuahua. Perhaps maybe have one of each as I should be retired by then and they will be rescue's.

Of all the chihuahuas I have met, just ONE was an appealing, happy little dog that I would have been willing to take home. One. All the rest have indeed been shivering, cowering, snappy, badly bred, badly socialized, badly trained, and, in my eyes, totally undesirable in every way.

THEN (drum roll please) I came upon Chazhound and saw what chi's are supposed to be like. :headbanger: They're adorable! Who knew?

You may think I am exaggerating about the undesirable chihuahuas I have met. I am not. Not even slightly. However, now that I am in love with Romeo... :thumbsupsmileyanim: Lordy, lord, but that dog is CUTE!!

We have one at the DP named Corona. He has been going to the park since he was like 12 weeks old (yes I know, not all his shots done, bad bad). He is now 2 and is the biggest social butterfly ever.

My friend just got a 7 month old chi from a bad breeder. she made me so mad not taking my advice about the awesome breeder I found. Now this dog is not socialized, snaps, growls at her and her family, shakes 100% of the time. its terrible.

its amazing what socialization can do. because both chis are from bad breeders. But coronas dad (yes it is a guy that owns hi, and his EBD "brother" lol) has socialized the crap out of that little guy

Alright now that requires proof. Pictures please.:D
Tankstar said the well-muscled Corona Chi belongs to some guy who just happens to go to the same dog park. Unless they're a relative or good friend ... it would be kinda awkward to start snapping pictures of someone else's dog, ya know?

I have seen a few well-muscled Chis ... apparently they get a lot more exercise than other Chis. Surprised you've never seen one. :::shrug:::

We need more Chaz like chis where I live. Unfortunately, I run into a lot of the stereotype chis where I live. Most chis I meet are not very nice. :( Most are probably coming out of the local pet stores and are owned by clueless people though.

There's one little chi that I like at the dog park but he's way out of standard. He's bigger than Summer and Mia. I think Summer thinks he's a pap because she goes gaga over him and tries to kiss him.

I think all chis need to be like Romeo. He's awesome and beautiful and in pictures looks very different from the dogs around here. I want to meet Romeo and Tucker. :)

There's one really hot guy here that jogs shirtless with a chi that looks cool and really athletic (both the guy and the dog lol). ;)

I have met one chi that was sweet. Fat, but sweet. It would come up to you and just stare at you until you started petting it. Once you did, it would slowly rise up to put its paws on you in the cutest way. He was kinda hard to ignore.

Right after I joined Chaz, my really good friends got a chi puppy. I don't know where from, but right after they got it they brought it to our party and everyone was holding it and the poor thing was shaking so bad...! It has since grown up to be a yippy barky nasty little thing and they gave it away to someone else I know. She knows what to do I think though, hopefully the chi will learn she is not the queen.
