So, on the subject of animals you wouldn't own, what are some breeds you just CAN'T see yourself having?

Can be breeds you don't like, just can't see yourself owning for whatever reason, or really admire but just don't fit you lifestyle......

I wouldn't have a bully breed of sorts, they just don't appeal to me. Teeny dogs also need not apply :p No offence meant to anyone who owns them, its just tall skinny things are my ideals. Nothing with a squashed in face (can't think of the word, but remember it begins with a B!), I like noses :)

I like things springer spaniel sized and upwards, but can't see me ever having a BIG dog, just tall dogs :)

That list for me would be exceedingly long.(hundreds) There are so many breeds and so many breeds I wouldn't own. The list of what breeds I would own would be much shorter.:p

Anything brachycephalic or hairless. I like to be active and outdoors in a variety of conditions and need dogs that can tolerate it.

For me its small dogs, I have nothing against them but they have just never appealed. Anything under the size of say a BC just wouldnt be a good match.

I hesitate to say absolutely no to any breed because if the right individual came along then I would consider it. I'm honestly not much interested by breeds outside the herders, papillons, some guardian types, some sighthounds, and a few of the lesser known sporting breeds (kooikers, tollers, etc).

In general though I wouldn't want a dog that:

-Drools a lot is #1, the more I'm around big jowly breeds, the more I get grossed out by it. I was slimed by a boxer across the leg and it made me feel squeamish. A pyr put a big string of drool on mia's head the other day and I about died. I am really a wimp when it comes to drool.
- Needs professional grooming or has a curly coat. I don't like the feel of curly dog hair and I am far too lazy to actually get them clipped.
- extreme brachycephalic breeds- health issues, activity issues
- dogs with wrinkles- wrinkle cleaning is just not something I want to do
-scenthounds- I really like them but we're on different pages I think.
- most spitz- just don't care much for the look and temperament. I like the herding spitz though (Icelandics, lapphunds, etc)
- most terriers- grooming, temperament. Exceptions would be a well bred jack, staffy, or border terrier.
- I'm not keen on a dog too big to pick up in an emergency though I do love some of the large guardians. I'm just not sure I'd ever own one. Life span of the giant breeds is also something I wouldn't deal with.
- While I feel like I could deal with dog reactivity, dog selective dogs, and same sex aggression, flat out DA is something I'd like to avoid. Unfortunately many breeds I like are DA to some extent.

As for breeds: Neos, huskies, boxers, shih tzu, weimaraner, mini schnauzer, and pekignese round out the list of least likely to own. Neapolitan mastiffs are definitely #1 least likely to own. I met my first ones this summer and all I could think of was drool and wrinkles. When it got to moving, drool flew all over it, wrinkles were just flying everywhere.... just about the opposite of what I like in dogs.

The only toy breeds I'm interested in are papillons, cavaliers, and cresties. I might consider a crestie or a cav but I really think I'll probably just stick with paps for the little dogs in my life.

I would not own a Fila or a Pekingese. Those are the two breeds that I can say with 100% certainty I would not own.

No brachy breeds or bullies.
-Breathing problems and problems with the law and owning them (bullies)

No toys (Other than Paps and Cavaliers)
- too small and not active enough

No poodles or curly dogs
- don't like the coat and cannot deal with going to the groomer so often

I adore most of the Northern breeds because they are just gorgeous but personally I don't think I can handle the stubbornness and the escape artist aspect.

No hairless or wirehaired

No short legged breeds (eg. Dandy Dinmont, doxies, corgi...although I LOVE corgis to death)
- I'm too afraid of back problems. All our dogs seem to love jumping up and down furniture and beds and leaping everywhere I wouldn't want a low to the ground breed to hurt themselves

No terriers
- terrier personality doesn't seem to match with me for some reasons

No GSD/Belgian Malinois
- their work ethic doesn't match mine, either does their aloofness

No giants/anything over 80-90lbs
- too big! Their short lifespan scares me and breaks my heart just thinking about it

Terriers, mini schnauzers, boxers, shih tzus, llasas, pugs, chows, shar peis, and spitz breeds round out my top list of breeds I'll never own. I also don't see myself owning any chase hounds.

Well, for me it breaks down into temperment. The breeds I wouldn't want based on temperment would be:
Labs
Goldens
Boxers
Pits
Dachsunds
Poms
I'm more hesitant to decline a breed based on looks, considering the first words out of my mouth on meeting Argon were "Oh, God, he's soooo ugly. He's like a mutant praying mantis bug."

collies, shelties, vizslas, weims, retrievers of any sort, bichons, maltese, most "traditional" terriers (though I love APBTs, Kerry Blues, Airdales, Pats & Staffys), pointers, setters, beagles (yes I do beagle rescue lol)... probably never own a bluetick, black & tan, redbone, or a walker....

Drool! After that I'm open to breeds. I am however married to APBT and after going malinois, well, you can't get much better. :p Of course someday if I want to slow down I'll consider a gsd or beauceron.

I have done small dogs and would do small again only to about 10 lbs. My yorkies and chis were just to tiny.

Beagles, labs and wheatens have always been in my Top never to own list. I have just seen way too many in the clinic, and almost ALL do not appeal to me personality wise!

Huskies, yorkies, maltese, chis, heck most small breeds (except poodles), most terriers, most northern breeds, alot of herding breeds. I have learned what MY personality can handle, and what i cant.

I find myself attracted to the working and sporting type breeds the most. Drool is a big no-no! DA/HA is completely out! IDK, my list of dogs i Would has become so small! I just cant see for me getting a better dog then a standard poodle. I would like to try other breeds, but my heart belongs with the poodles.

You know you're on a crazy dog forum when GSDs and Beaucerons are considered slow down dogs :rofl1:

I'm a girl of moderation.

Not small not huge (Webster, at 18"/22lbs, is about as small as I'd go).
No extreme coats/skin (hairless, excessive coat, wrinkles, poodles, etc.)
No flyweights or heavyweights (most sighthounds, rotties, etc.)
No extreme structures (brachycephalic, GSDs)
No scenthounds, most spitze...like them, just not a good fit lifestyle-wise.
No bully breeds...again, just not a good fit IME

So basically I seem to fit best with herders, retrievers, and some terriers. And lo and behold, I have a dog for each of those categories ;).

Really really depends on the individual dog though. I need a dog with a lot of GO coupled with a body and mind that can handle it.

Agree with everyone on drooling. I am not too squeamish and if a Great Dane wants to put his head on my lap and say "hi", okay, I can deal with that. But not every single moment of every single day! Don't think I could live with an excessively drooling dog.

Plus I remember an English Mastiff owner talking about how she is constantly cleaning his water bowl because of the drool that just accumulates every time in the bowl. Ew...

I would have once said no flat faced breeds or hairless breeds, but I love Pugs and Chinese Cresteds, and maybe in 60 - 70 years I will want one. But I'm not so sure on the entire idea of a dog's eye popping out. THAT, I'm definitely too squeamish for. And wrinkle cleaning isn't my thing either. So that probably takes Pugs out.

So no bug eyed or excessively wrinkly dogs.

No spitzes (except, like Laurelin said, the herding ones) or hounds because I'm not the right person for one. A shame because I just love the look of both types. No human aggressive dogs, and preferably no outright dog aggressive dogs, either, although same-sex aggression and high reactivity, I can deal with okay.

Definitely no poodles or other dogs with coat types that requiring professional grooming. I am perfectly happy with a breed that intensively sheds, but high maintenance coats, not so much.

No extreme structures (brachycephalic, GSDs)
Most German Shepherds I meet are not extreme in structure. Just sayin' :D

Most I meet are. I like yours though, honestly...one of two GSDs I've seen a lot of and actually like, and the other has passed away.

Doesn't really matter though -- just saying the breed as a whole doesn't appeal to me and that's one of the reasons. I'm glad there are people who do enjoy them and that they are well-matched to their dogs.

I wouldn't own a lot of small toy breeds - Shih Tzus, Poms, Pekes, Yorkies, Chinese Crested (although I really like them), Pugs, etc. The only toys I would own are Papillons and Chihuahuas. I like Havanese too.

Nothing giant and drooly.

Poodles - any size. I've met a lot, definitely not a dog for me.

Boxers! I don't do bouncy.

Vizlas, Weims.

Ridgebacks

Bernese Mountain Dogs. Love them, but couldn't go through the heartbreak of health problems.

Labs and Huskies. I could do a cross or something, but not dogs I would actually seek out from a breeder.

A lot of hounds. Not because I don't like some of them, but they just aren't the kind of dog for me. I've met some Whippets I think I could do. I wish I was suited for a Borzoi - they're a breed I just drool over but it's not a good fit!

Jeez, I sound picky!

I would pretty much never say never of any breed given the variation within a breed. Loads of people who 'hate' JRTs love Dekka and would take her in a heart beat. She is none of the characteristics that they dislike.

But traits I don't like. Size, I like portability. I love BCs but they are on the upper limit of what I wish to own. I don't want anything so small that I have to be too careful. Drooling is a big ick, but dogs with droopy eyes make my eyes water and eeeewww!

Much in the way of grooming needs is not my thing either. I love the look of nicely coiffed dogs, but far too much effort for me.

For the most part what I dont' want in a dog is personal attributes. I have met JRTs and LHW that I would have no desire to own.

No terriers

Kind of surprised because I know a few pap people who have terriers and are frequently saying that they have many similarities. (smart, into people, out of the box thinkers, agile, fun loving etc etc)
