To clarify, and in defense of Boris' name, he has displayed absolutley no food agression. Fran agrees that he has never displayed food aggression. i was able to remove a piece of chicken from his mouth, hold it, and give it back to him with no objection. He just looked a little surprised.

I cannot speak to his toy guarding, since the toys here are not expressly his and he has shown no interest in them.

As for news, he went to the dog park today, and was much more enthusiastic, carrying his nice plumy tail up high where it belongs, and actually barking a few times.

Im so glad he is doing well. He sounds like a dog who will do well in the right home.

Hugs Fran. I know you will miss him

I missed this while it was all going on as I was away, but I'm so glad that there is a happy ending for Boris. :)

LOL...it's ok, both of mine are drool factories...Lacey not so bad but Lily is slobbery...he'll fit right in.
Everything I own is covered in dog hair or slobber anyway, even though I spent 4 hours cleaning today to get all the fur out of the carpet (yeah right! ) I'm still finding tumbleweeds. :)

I guess I should have warned you about that... lol.

I'm really glad he's doing so well. Still very sad but I'm sure he will be happy. I have this hope now that in another environment he won't be even that interested in stealing things anymore.

I am so happy for him!

Fran, just out of curiosity, why did his stealing things upset you so much? Ben does it all the time and I just trade him. He is a horrible resource guarder. Obviously I don't have kids and Ben is WAY smaller then Boris. But I just wonder why you found it annoying. I usually laugh at it and trade for something more fun.

Ben loves my panties and can't wait to steal them! LOL!

I doubt Ben has resource guarding if he just lets you trade. It's not the same thing to just steal something and be ok with trading, and stealing it and growling as soon as someone gets close. He never guards his own stuff, just the random clothes/washcloths/papers he picked from the floor. Probably because he knows we used to react strongly when he did that, so he gets defensive knowing we will want it back.

The only thing that works to get it back is throwing bread away from him and he eventually leaves the object to get it. Now, if you're relax about it and pretty much ignore it, he won't growl as soon as you get close, but you still won't be able to get it back (although eventually he leaves it if you ignored him long enough, but by then the thing is destroyed). We always managed to get the low value items back by trading, but it never changed anything with the high.

It wouldn't have been so bad, except he stole everything. Couldn't leave laundry on the bed, toilet paper in reach, papers on the floor, baby toys on the floor... I swear I spent more time monitoring him and trying to get the stuff back than doing anything else. Most days I just let him have whatever he had all day so I didn't have to bother with it anymore, but then he spent most of the day in his crate... You have no idea how relaxing the last few days have been... I was able to leave the laundry basket in the bedroom, then leave laundry on the bed there... I can leave the toilet paper wherever I want to... I don't have to worry about leaving paper too close to the edge of the table... I don't have to put the kids' toys in the play area every time they throw one out... it's huge. It probably doesn't seem much but when you're trying to put a kid's meal together when the kids are screaming, not having to take those 10 necessary steps to make sure everything and everyone is safe is a big deal.

But yeah... it might be different in another environment. If he's more active and is clueless about how people react to him stealing, he might not react the same way when he does, or might not steal at all, if things lose their value because he's more stimulated. It's what I'm hoping at least.

I get you. It does make sense. I would get annoyed as well.

Just to clarify on Ben. When he arrived he would get ahold of something and if you went near him he would growl and snap. He bit me a few times over the first couple of months. It took nearly 6 months of solid work to get him to calm down with it.
I had the luxuary of not having kids and being able to work on it.
Also, my SO knows full well I am in charge of the dogs and he is not allowed to punish at all and not allowed to train without getting instructions from me first.

It just sounds like you were stuck in a ever growing cycle with Borris. I am glad you have been able to relax and that he is getting another chance. You did the right thing by Borris and that was very brave of you.

Boris is here with me. He is going to the vet in an hour to get his health cert. He is scheduled to leave here on friday. Yesterday he stole one of my socks, but we went and took it from him before he chewed it up with no problem.

That's awesome Doc. That would never have happened here. Hopefully my guts is right and it was an environment issue and shouldn't be a problem with someone else.

Since he has been here he has been getting a ton of exersize and stimulation, and in Colorado he has a big lot to run on and kids to play with. I think he will do just fine. I hope your husband is doing OK, he seemed very upset.

Yah, I realized that after. For some reason I had thought it had already been a week, then looked at the date on the original post lol

We are back from Dr. Stack's. He has a health cert, which is great. Unfortunatly he is a little over 30 inches tall and 80 lbs--so he needs a bigger vari-kennel. I was wondering where you guys got it--I am hoping they will give us credit for it when we get the giant size one he needs.
