Are there any dog breeds you find ugly/dislike the look of?

Here's the deal - I may dislike the look of a breed generally, but I have found specific dogs of that breed to be lovely.

For one, I don't like Afghan Hounds generally, but there is a member on the forum with a show line Afghan Hound that I find to be beautiful and elegant. I also don't generally like the look of Pugs, but at the same time I'd actually not mind owning one and adore Pugs personally. I also like the the athletic, fit Pugs I have seen around the forums.

I used to dislike Chinese Cresteds, especially the hairless ones, but now I just love them!! I think that is the only hairless breed I like, though.

Oh, and Neo Mastiffs and English mastiffs I don't care for. And of course English Bulldogs. I have honestly never met or seen an English Bulldog I liked, unfortunately. I don't like Bull Terrier heads, either.

It's really not to say that I don't like examples of these dogs at an individual level, because I often do. I just am not a fan of the way they look overall.

Clumber Spaniels. There are a couple in the neighborhood and I don't like the look.

Like others have said, even if there is a breed I don't adore I like individual dogs.
I will never have an english bulldog but one of my good mates has just got one. He is a sweet, sweet little dog and relaly fun to hang out with.

Quinn doesn't know quiet what to make of the dog that can't keep up though.
This is from a couple of months ago, he was about 4.5 months at the time. Its the only pic I have of them though, hopefully we can get them out together this week aswell.

"Who you callin' ugly?"

Honestly, there really isn't a breed I think is ugly. I can usually find something cute about every dog. Now, sometimes herding breeds can have a very intense stare that's a little disturbing to me, but I still think they're incredibly beautiful dogs.

Now my own dogs look very odd and I'll admit it. :) Lucy's wrinkles and her lip that seems to always get stuck make her look like a goof. Joey had wall eyes and sometimes I'm not entirely sure if he's looking at me or something near me.

Are my dogs ugly? Yup..and I love them like crazy!

Probably an undisclosed location somewhere in the
I can't say that the look of some dogs don't appeal to me more than others but one thing I found out quickly is looks don't matter at all if there is a connection that happens between a dog and me. The dog can be the strangest looking creature, large or small, on four legs (or sometimes missing a leg) and it can be love forever after!

I have a real weakness though for those little hairless critters LOL.

Georgygirl, I think your dogs are adorable. I'm especially fond of Lucy. ;) I think Boston Terriers are adorable. I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan of the pushed in faces generally, but of all of the brach breeds a Boston would be the one I'd choose, mainly because they can be awesome, athletic little dogs and their faces are not as pushed in as say, a pug.

Gah, this thread has me all twisted in knots. I love all dogs, and personality is so much more important. There are physical traits I'm not a fan of, but it doesn't even mean a dog with that trait won't be cute to me. It feels like I've slighted pugs above, but I think they're cute and Izzie is evidence that they can be athletic.

Earth,,,or is that Eyeth? LOL
I have to say that this has been a most interesting thread and I love the respect given for everyone's preferences, even where they differ from our own.

I've been owned by everything from mixed breeds to several yorkies to cresties and a great pyrenees. I think for me, I don't have a set preference....it is what personality/temperment fits me at the time, and what I can best provide at the time to a dog. And as was mentioned...the connection has to be there of course. Something calls me to each one for their own different reasons!

Not really. I kind of have a soft spot for ugly dogs. Most ugly dogs are so ugly they're cute to me.

Tiffany was actually a total fug when we adopted her.

It's hard to believe she's so cute now. :rofl1:

You really can't get much cuter than that! Awwwwwwww. Just precious!!!

I agree. There are some dogs I don't find beautiful....as in a fine piece of art work. My own Chulita, I wouldn't wager on in any beauty contest. (awwww, sorry Chuli):p But that doesn't mean I don't find them cute or find that they have lovely dispositions. I've met many dogs I wouldn't choose for one reason or another. But I tend to adore almost all dogs. I think a better word for me to use than "ugly" would be "unappealing." (?)

Whisper...I'm with ya on the Bostons. I think out of all the smooshie faced dogs, they're really quite awesome. Oh, and those Frenchies. I'd almost be tempted. There's just something about them. Now there I go again...contradicting myself. First I say I don't care for smooshy faces. Then turn around and say I do. LOL. Well, I don't really. But there's just that little something there.:p

What an amazing beach that is! The dogs look like they're in heaven. It's really, really gorgeous.

I dunno, tollers are pretty ugly in my opinion. Even so, they're still pretty cute.
Ahahahahaha! Bailey has eyes similar to a Toller's (with the pink eye rims and everything), and I love them. But there was one totally bizarre split second right after I got him, and he was on his back showing his belly, and I wondered if they accidentally gave me a pig at the rescue. :rofl1: And then some random woman came up and told me she thought he rather looked like a piglet. It was too funny.

He's a dog, though, or the vet would've told me. And he's perfect. ;)

EBs bother me a lot. I just look at them and get sad.

But frankly any bracchiosephalic dog, and dogs with deformed limbs . . . anything structural that can cause major issues to a dog I just find really sad and those are the breeds/dogs I wouldn't own.
And I agree with this. I actually have liked the personalities of the EBs I've met (Bailey's BFF at daycare is one), but they make me so very sad.

I will admit a bias against pugs -- that might be my only real "dislike" -- but I blame one really badly bred (and behaved) one that I had to spend a weekend with years ago. And, despite the braccy bias, I think Bostons and Frenchies are adorable.

The droopy eyes kind of make me uncomfortable. And I tend not to be a fan of most small dogs -- I don't actively dislike them, but it's not the same "omgdog" reaction I have to almost all other dogs, lol.

In any event, Bailey isn't going to be mistaken for a well bred dog (I don't even know what breed that would be, lol), and I love him more than anything. And my second favorite dog in the world is not a very pretty girl (she's a Heinz 57), but I absolutely adore her. So, at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter to me.
