I have been a part of another animal/pet sitting forum for a long time, other than that one, I also go here. These are my 2 "animal forums."

Anyway, I was just checking in there ( If I don't, I get chased down, haha)... but anyway, this is not funny.

Below is a disturbing topic. Although none, or most of you here are not pet sitters, but still animal lovers, I wanted to share this message from a new member. If you love animals at all, this will break your heart.... this is some of the stuff we have to deal with....

please read on and I would love your comments...

"Okay, I guess I'm mostly venting, but I just came back from a meet and greet with a new client, owner of a well-cared for golden retriever and a macaw. First thing I notice about the bird is it's in a very dirty cage, small amount of filthy water, a few toys, and that's it. Cage is much too small too.

Owner tells me that they don't care if Scooter lives or dies -- That I don't really have to feed him or give him water, that if anything happened to him, no questions would be asked (his words). He doesn't go to the vet, ever. I asked if I could feed him fresh fruit or veggies, and he says they don't care about his health. He just gets commercial parrot food and that's it. When he squawks too loud, he suggests I pick up a water pistol (there are several around the cage) and squirt him with it to make him shut up. I was pretty darn upset by this guy. He's laughing while he's telling me all this, fully expecting me to laugh along with him.

I SHOULD have turned down this job right then and there. On my way out the door, that's what I was telling myself over and over. Well, I guess Scooter will get at least 3 days of no cruelty while I'm taking care of him.

Are there such things as macaw rescues? I have half a mind to get some brochures or something from them and leave them with the paperwork on my last visit."

I WAS SHAKING WHEN I READ THAT, PLUS ANOTHER MEMBER EVEN SAID, "WATCHOUT WHEN AMY GETS HERE...." I AM SOOO SAD FOR THIS PRECIOUS PARROT.I GOT MYSELF AND A GROUP INTO THIS...I HOPE THIS PARROT IS OUT WITHIN DAYS....
JUST WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU GUYS/GALS AND GET SOME PROSPECTIVE FROM YOU.

If he doesn't care whether the parrot lives or dies then he won't care whether that person relieves him of said parrot.

Which is what I would do. Always wanted a bird around the house and there I'd be getting a free one. (and a beautiful one at that; macaws are generally beautiful)

Honestly, because most people suck. that is why i work with animals, this is an on going thing with lots of pets... i know what you are saying, there are tons of people who would love to have this parrots (who, by the way, needs lots of treatment now. Macaws, and most parrots have an I.Q. of 85 - 100, which is compared to a kindergarten child. They are a one person bird and get attached quick. This bird is going to need some help if he gets out of there...

I have the "infantry" on it as i am speaking.... pet sitters have to be cautious, and she is going to try that avenue, and others I gave her, which is kinda illegal. I also have a bird group interv. and I also said that I would fly there and get the parrot if i have to. This piece of garbage needs to lie in the dump for awhile..... he sooo does not want to meet me. I am so sick over this...

omg that's horrible! i use to have one i got it when my great grandma died and i took it in. he lived about ten years more but by then he was ancient. from what i knew he was given to my great grandma when her older sister died. i love those birds and right now i even have a parrolet. do you know what happened? could he really get the bird taken away? i mean he's not really caring for it but he is feeding it. isn't the law like... basic needs food and shelter sort of thing? i would give money to that guy to get that bird away from him

That makes me mad. I used to own a Macaw and I loved that bird to death. That owner dosent deserve a Macaw or any other animal for that matter. Meaness.

if i were him, i would take the bird with me, without a seconds hesitation. I couldnt care for one, but i would take it to the nearest shelter that would...

please, if that guy has not already sat for the guy, tell him to TAKE THE POOR BIRD....

god, that is so sickening...i dont understand how some people can be SO obviously cruel...pure ignorance resulting in animal abuse is terrible, but, in my opinion forgivable...conscious animal abuse is just about the most unforgivable act there is....

When the owner gets back why doesn't the pet sitter tell the owner he/she fell in love with the bird and would love to take it home? The bird can be taken to a new home or shelter.

There is a local magazine that called PET PAWS i will get the link that has homeless pets in the back listed..on there often are many pics of parrots needed homes and i have run into the group at several fund raisers..where they have the set up of parrots that are looking for loving places to live..i will scurry around and see if i can find their site. That is simply a tragedy especially for a bird of such character and intelligence..i hope they get treated = one day.
here we go.. [email protected]
pawprints is www.pawprintskc.com

Sounds like the guy would deffinately be willing to give it up if she asked for it. It's worth a shot. And yes there are rescues for exotic birds. BTW be careful with the macaw! They can be quite tempermental sometimes bonding very closesly to just one person. If you upset them they can do some serious damage. My cousin used to have two of them (he might still have them actually). Gorgeous animals but if anybody other than my cousin entered the aviary, all he|| was set loose

Oh that poor bird, I hope that someone takes the bird, that is just cruel. Wonder how the owner would feel if no one fed him

i wil have to get my soapbox out..not to dusty either..ohoh..but if people saw how these birds are shipped to pet stores..and treated every inch of the way they would be beyond horrified..if you do purchase a parrot..first read and read and read one more..then talk to parrot owners..and possibly your neighbors if they are close...make sure it was hand raised..find out where it came from BEFORE you purchase..and please do not support the carrange (sp) better word..horror that has dropped each one at the pet store door. ok..i put it back away..for a little while i promise;)

That was my suggestion too but I was afraid that he might want to try to get some money out of her for the bird. He sounds like the kind of guy that would do that.

Just take the bird then. doesn't seem like a hard situation to me;) My grand parents ahve bene looking for one and it would probally be pretty easy to place if it isn't a bitter or screamer.

They are ALL biters and screamers. That's the problem. Alot of people think they are sooo neat to have one and don't realize the upkeep in owning one and the patience for dealing with the screaming. I have an Umbrella Cockatoo that we simply adore. He's not an 'on purpose' biter. But, sometimes he'll nip you by accident just trying to climb on you or if he gets spooked. I never ever allow him on my shoulder (although he tries and tries). One nip and I'll have a lovely piercing on my face or worse a gash and stitches. They are definately screamers! Especially at the crack of dawn and when the sun starts to come down. They call in the flock at these hours. Its toatally natural. These are wild animals and should be able to live as much as possible as they would in the wild. And they are a LIFELONG member of the family. Most likely outliving me :)

That poor poor bird!

cockatoos are sooooo possesive! i was given a greater sulpher..and i gave him back! that is what i meant when i said read read and talk to neighbors especially if you live in an apartment. We couldn't keep a secretary where i worked the noise was just deafening..what is worse then to take a totally social animal..one that neeeeeeds all his friends around him all the time and then leave them alone all day with at the most a mirror..sigh..that is why i will never own a bird again..i won't put one in a cage because 2020 hindsight (not critizing anyone else so no one take this wrong) i just cant..after what i have seen kennels break my heart, and cages should just be for criminals. as it is alot of animals have healthy long happy lives confined..that is just a personal promise to me...(but i am weird ya all know that) ...the e-mail address i posted belongs to good peeps..they are everywhere, pet fund raisers, pet expos...trying to find good and loving homes for these birds. I hope Animal Biz that these people can see that they should turn him over..if you report them that would put the business in a bad frame i don't know what you would do under a situation like that..birds are just sooooo smart..as much as i adore my dogs and think they are all einstines..birds are a hundred times more intelligent, and emotional. A creature that loves for life, is dedicated to family, is willing to take over other babes in the wild..i love it that robins have community daycare for the juvies..and the juviniles will help raise the next batch right along with mum and dad..even step in if something happens to a parent..they deserve the utmost in respect and care...good luck ANIMALBIZ and let us know how it all turns out!
