I hope Amy doesn't mind me updating you all on this. The Pet Sitter who was going to care for the bird talked to the owner and suddenly he "was just kidding" and "loves the bird" and doesn't want to part with it. She has refused the Pet Sit and is returning his key and check but beyond that, there isn't much she can do. She lives alone and is afraid of repercussions should she press the matter. That doesn't mean that somebody isn't going to try to do something about it, though. Amy is/was pretty upset.

figures..i don't get people at all sometimes..send her my love and tell her i am sorry..have seen it over and over especially in the dogs we boarded. People would pay hundreds of dollars to keep it in jail instead of rehoming..:(

That compeltely and totally makes my blood BOIL! After just losing my Cockatiel Skeet I can't see how anyone could be so cruel to their parrot. Do they not understand the emotions those birds feel? Rah just makes me so mad I could punch the guy.

i had the wrong qoute sorry ..i meant the three days of good care....
that is the very reason i stayed on at the animal warehouse for the year i worked there..as long as i was there i knew they were getting better care. He never provided food for the baby iguanas..they all think the next person will feed them and since lizards and snakes can go for a while without eating they get passed down from one place to another without anything. When a lizard like a chamelion is going to die he gets a little black spot behind his eye..most of them came in that way..the iguanas were all ribs. I would get out at 6 before i went into work and pick fresh red clover blossoms and other naturals that i knew were good for them and weren't sprayed with pestitcide..i bought crickets with my own pay. i nagged about the turtles so much my boss sent me down to farmers' market to check the dumpsters...do you know what you FIND in those dumpsters? but i would manage to bring back a car full (and it stunk too) of broken watermelons and other damaged fruit. Wasn't the best but it was better then nothing. When he got the puppies tho and they got parvo all were destroyed..all 20 i think. I just wanted to die. When i found out he was ordering a fresh batch not 48 hours after the others were disposed of i quit. The lizards and snakes came in flour bags from the orient..the parrots from who knows where..always packed inadaquately and just about to parish from lack of water. Then they would pack them wrong and you would open up a crate of lovebirds that had chewed each other to pieces..honestly it ws that bad. Every bit of it. I so loved them all too.

He was hopefully kidding since birds are more fragile thana dog or cat if he really didn't care it probally would be dead by now. I hope he was kidding anyway.

sry forgot to get the quote from page two and computer is kinda slow so don't want to go back and get it. but even if he said he doesn't want it if someone asks for it he'd definitely ask for money. even someone who doesn't know much about birds would know that bird could sell for a LOT

Antother update, as Pam said, this guy "said" he was kidding....he's not, just scared that he will get into trouble. When this sitter came over for the first meet and greet, the cage was too small for a macaw, the cage was very dirty, and the squirt bottles were about the cage. Little/dirty water and no food. (You would think that you would at least water, feed and clean the cage before someone new/a pet sitter comes over. It shows he is a bad owner.

I myself, agree, would have taken the bird, but remember, this is her busiess, she could lose it, get arressted etc... BUT, the guy did say that he didn't care if the bird died, so that's what I would have told him when he got back, risking losing my business, because he would have to prove it. She is going all the right routes, in reagrds to the spca, animal control etc..... Will let you all know. I have a blue and gold, and I could fit into her cage, and I am almost 5'8.

Personally, I'd probably have smiled and joked with the guy, and the first day after he was gone, have been in there with the camera, gathered evidence and covered my butt that way . . . THEN had a rescue step in and take the bird. That way you only lose the business you don't want anyway . . . and your reputation is improved with real animal people.

Let us know how things shake out, Biz . . . I can understand why you're furious.

Grrr that really ticks me off. I used to have a parrot...he was an absolute sweetheart. Yeah he made noises - duh, that's what birds do - but he was a great companion. And it wasn't that hard to keep his cage clean. Refill his food bowls every day, give him some attention. And it was all worth it, because he was happy, healthy, and sweet.

This case reminds of one my sis told me about though...she is a huge animal lover and really into rescue. So anyways, she rescued this macaw...his cage was too small for him and his owners didn't even care about him. She rescued him and he lived a happy (but short :() life with her. I'm not sure how he died. But at least he had a happy ending.

birds are terribly fragile..a finch can starve to death in less the 48 hours and you can imagine how fast their demise without water.
All birds have a higher metabolism..their hearts beat so fast..and they have air sacs that can fill up with fluid as well as their lungs if they have respitory illnesses..while in shipping they are dosed with anitibiotics, under tremendous stress and succumb quickly due to injury. I found a finch once that had torn off his wing..i found one drop of blood and another and another leading from the flight pen..i was frantic for this was a strawberry finch my all time heart throb of a favorite even tho i would have been just as upset no matter what it was..i finally found it and got quickstop on the wound, put it in a small quiet box and took it home to recuperate. I had her for many many years. Those are the ones you don't see at the pet store..a dead count was done daily and there were always ones to mark down. When parrots are stressed they often will pluck out their feathers..rather like teens that cut. It is easy enough to understand why. A poor diet can lead to brittle bones. We had an indian ring neck parakeet..something so beautiful i do not have the words to discribe...i found on the floor of the flight pen. I took her home and fed her a watered down food of peanut butter, honey, and vitimins. When i saw that she was actually going to make it (i figured she would be dead by that night) i made an appointment with the zoo vet. (i also kept her warm with a small bulb and her cage covered and in quiet so she could rest) ..she died in the vet's hand. He thought it was simply the stress of his handling that stopped her heart. She was just that weak. I have thousands of stories like this..ones that will make me weep if i write them..beak fungus and oh my let a snake get out in the night and you know what night fright is all about...It is just wrong, every inch of it. Then to be sold to what should be a happy ending to a terrible journey and find no love, bad food, improper caging so they cant even stretch their wings..inadaquate perches to cripple their feet..no animal should be treated as such.

Well, as of a few hours ago, she showed up, tore up her contract, gave the key back and left... He actually invited her inside, she said no thank you. Then she left and called animal control.

I myself would have dealt it with different ways, Renee's idea is one and a very good one, the other, saying the bird died and taken it....sorry, I am all about the animals, and I don't care, (although there are still other ways to go about it), or I would have taken the animal control person there while I was there pet sitting.

Unfort., life sucks, and some animals have to take the beating beause of "the way things are," and any red tape could cost the life of the bird, so that is why I would have pulled a "Mission Impossible." :)

Will keep you all informed....
