This is just tragic and disgusting. Posted on another forum.

WARNING: Graphic images of dead dogs at the bottom of the page. You can read the page before seeing the pictures though.

Welcome to Kiokee Mastiffs: LIonhearted Mastiffs--English Mastiff Breeder Abandons dogs--"Max's Story"

I thought it was important to remind people that even though a breeder looks good, is producing high quality dogs, and is well thought of by many peers does not mean they necessarily are good. People can look good on paper and still be horrible. It's unfathomable to me that someone involved in the breed club and a breed forum would be doing all this. I read some of her posts there and she did sound like a reputable breeder! If you can, make sure you see the breeder's grounds first hand or send someone trusted to see them. If something seems not right, run, don't walk away.

ETA: By the way the breeder has vanished and cannot be found. Supposedly she still has 10 of the dogs with her. AC retrieved 7 live mastiffs from the property and found at least 10 dead mastiffs there. Poor pups. :(

That's horrible :( I can't believe she just LEFT the dogs in the same spots they died in for 2 weeks :yikes: How can anyone be so cruel?

those photos of the dead dog, with it's paw on the fence, are DEVESTATING. i can't even imagine treating a dog like that, especially a ten-year-old :(

I have to think that someone like that had some sort of mental problem. It almost sounds like she started out with good intentions, and then just didn't know how to fix her situation.

I thought that too, maybe it's true I don't know. The more I read the more it looks like there were clear signs years ago that she had a problem taking care of her dogs. Unfortunately no one seems to have even tried stepping up and contacting AC for whatever reason.

Another weird aspect was there was another breeder living there and keeping her dogs at the same location. You would think between two mastiff breeders they would notice something was dreadfully wrong. Also, it seems now that the rescues can speak on the issue, several (or maybe all) the dogs were shot and killed, not starved to death.

I don't understand how something like this could happen. I feel so bad for the dogs.

Unfortunately it happens..

Back in the mid 90's something similar went on with a Collie breeder and professional handler in Ohio.

Just a warning... but this link does have some graphic photos.

How Did This Happen

However the trial really do no good!.. it's really sickening, what he got away with!! I think the other people that KNEW something was going on, but did nothing, should have been charged as well...

I just finished reading that story and viewing the pictures.......I have tears streaming down my face, and anger over his sentence. Other than that, I am speechless :(

You know the sad thing about this?? This happened in '96, I had Collies at that point, but did not show yet.. I would have been 15 yrs old at that point... so I had no idea about any of this that went on, until a few years later when I started showing (at 18)... and I found the original web link for this.

But being from Ohio, originally and knowing many breeders up in Ohio, it's crazy to think about this happening... however some of the other breeders mentioned in that article that knew something was going on, but did little to help... still breed and show today..

no not dog lovers. they love themselves & desire recognition but obviously cannot achieve it in & of their selves. so they BUY pretty dogs from others and breed more pretty dogs and trot them around a ring for a ribbon and personal recognition. this is another reason why the show community needs to step up & require performance qualifications for a dog to compete. if a GSD had to have a Sch I or a herding title to compete in adult class conformation toward champion it would weed out the unhealthy fads & the most of the idiots like this because they would be unwilling to put in the actual work to train & compete. JMO and worth what you paid for it.

With all due respects Pops, this sort of thing isn't just found in the show world.........I am sure working breeders are guilty of neglect from time to time as well, as well as agility and dog sports people........it happens ANYWHERE to all walks of life :(

I don't show, don't breed, never have, most likely never will........but these abusers are not examples of the show world, they are examples of cruel heartless people, perhaps even SICK people who need mental help as mentioned.

To say this is indicative of the show world would be like saying only poor people abuse their children, only rich people are greedy, only fat people are lazy.......etc etc.

Quite honestly I don't think this has a thing to do with working versus show at all. You could abuse working dogs exactly the same way as the dogs were abused here.

Honestly that kind of neglect and abuse has NOTHING to do with show, working OR *gasp*even the pet world. That is the result of a horrible individual who needs serious help, not the result of the show world. I would hazard a guess at that lady and gentleman would have been the same as pet owners too.

I don't think it has anything to do with her being a show breeder and EVERYTHING to do with the fact thats shes a horrible person.

Yep. I mean, look at those animal cops shows. Most of the people who let their amount of animals get out of hand are PET people. Those dogs aren't show or working dogs... just an accumulation of pets that they either took in or let breed over and over again.

Ive have seen the abuse and neglect that working bred Beagles and hounds go through around here.. They are very well bred dogs but live in tiny wire cages and only get out when its time to hunt.. Many are shot when they are no longer useful.. many of the breeder are known as reputable.
